Proof that society functions a lot better without big brother. This german town got rid of traffic lights, road signs and pedestrian signs. There hasn't been an accident in over a month when the average used to be at least 1 per week. They're also saving thousands from not having to maintain the lights and signs.

If you find yourself crossing the road in the German town of Bohmte, look both ways – and then perhaps check again.
It has scrapped all its traffic lights and road signs in a radical experiment designed to make the streets safer. Yesterday, the local council said the scheme was a complete success.
In the four weeks since the signs were ripped up, there has not been a single accident.
Officials wanted to test the theory that the 13,000 drivers who use the town every day would take extra care and show each other greater consideration if they were not told what to do.

I lived in Germany for over 2 years... and I thought they were leap years ahead of us in city planning and traffic control there were very few traffic lights... they used what was called a "priority road"... that was 20 years ago... apparently they adopted our model... I'm glad to hear their starting to think clearly again!

I confidently agree that
this would work in any small or smaller town. Many smaller areas and subdivisions in Arizona are stopsignless (or were). However, I have serious doubts about that even being a remote possibility in places like say..... Miami, Los Angeles, Houston, etc. Have you ever driven near D.C.? That would be a death sentence to 50% of the public there. The minimum "illegal" speed there is on average 70, thru major extensions with a safe following distance of 2 to 3 feet with exits about every 3/4 of a mile and turn signals from three lanes over optional. I still have nightmares about it 12 years later. Doing the speed limit and stopping curtiously for other drivers there could mean instantaneous death.

Man..big cities? I remember being in LA and stopped at a stop sign. I then witnessed about 200 people crossing the street. I stopped a other lights and saw the same thing. There would have been no way to drive at all without the lights. I was in Rome in the 80's and they had very few lights. You took your life in your hands every single time you crossed a 5 lane highway with lots of cars and no lights. It was really scary.

that I had a chance to respectfully disagree with you! ( you are on the mark, most of the time ) This would work even in the big cities. With the one exception, I would hope, of, D.C., where a 50% lost would really, really help us.
