Serenity!

I thought I was going to be the only one to suggest it. It is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Free and Brave
or Cradle to Grave
You can't have both

Free and Brave
or Cradle to Grave
You can't have both

Every episode of the short

Every episode of the short lived tv show, FIRE FLY is like a liberty bomb, smashing on to the card table, exploding and making everyone jump up, and go "what the heck?!!!!"

They only made 12 episodes. (and the movie "Serenity")

The captain "Mal Reynolds", and his right hand "man" Zoey (a very strong female character)...are ex-military, aka the "browncoats"...who fought the Unification War. The Alliance was attempting to force everyone under one government, including the browncoats, and waged a war to accomplish that end. The series starts off right after The Alliance wins, and they govern all.

Mal and Zoey take to the edges of the star system, where they fly cargo/smuggling runs on their small space ship, "Serenity".

They have additional crew, all individualistic, interesting characters...and they have many adventures, including a few scrapes with The Alliance.

Some might say it was like a western in space. That really never did it any justice. The acting was nearly perfect, the dialog brilliant, the music was awesome...lot's of fiddle, banjo, english horn, guitar with country/irish/indian/asian overtones. Some hilarious moments and some that made you tear up.

All in a universe where you could either be a sheep under The Alliance, or you could call your own shots, with no one guaranteeing you even your life or liberty...your own hands had to provide those things.

Great entertainment. I also second the Errol Flynn pirate movie that someone else mentioned...great flick.

"Being There"

This is a must see in times like these! Peter Seller's last film before he died! Shirley McClain and Melvin Douglas (who won the Oscar for supporting Actor for this film) are awesome too! This movie is so amazingly profound...especially for our times today! Basically, a slow-witted, sheltered, shut-in, played by Sellers, who grows up in Washington DC but has never left his home, is rendered homeless after the death of his father. Due to his father's embarrassment regarding his "slowness" at birth, he has no official birth record and therefore, no "official identity" for that matter. Since no one can prove he is related to the deceased or anyone else (which ironically, ends up to work in his favor), he is thrown out of the house with only his suitcase Prior to that, his only contact with the outside world, for all of his years, has come from the hours he's spent watching the world on television. Hence, his reality, and subsequent naivety of it, is hilariously depicted as he tries to make his way out in the streets. Finally, as "luck" would have it, he is struck by the car of one of the most powerful and influential people in Washington, who, as the plot develops, introduces Seller's character, "Chauncy Gardner" to the President himself! You will have to see it from here so I don't ruin the plot for you! I guarantee that you will love this film! A must see!

Very strong anti-tyranny message, and a pirate movie unlike anything they could produce today.

I know how you feel --- I

I know how you feel --- I can still remember watching "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (the original, 1950's version) when I was six or seven, and I was FREAKED OUT for days! Couldn't sleep, then when I did I was having nightmares for I don't know how long! I had seen other creepy sci-fi movies at that age, but none of them hit me like that one.

Nightmare creepy? How about

"The Hand" or maybe it was "The Thing" and it was this disembodied hand that crept around like a spider and CHOKED people. My father goosed us during family "scary movie night" with "THE HAND" and we almost jumped out of our skins!

"Jump you f$#@!%s!"

"The Thing" was another

"The Thing" was another creepy 1950's sci-fi movie, remade in the early 80's, but I know the other one you are talking about.

Another excellent one, especially for first-time viewers: the original "Alien" movie, from 1979. I saw it in the theatre with my dad, and we both were literally jumping out of our seats! As was almost everyone else.

OK, here is an obscure one: "Salmonberries", with KD Lang playing a lesbian Eskimo who seduces the town's reluctant Danish librarian. Filmed in Kotzebue, Alaska --- the majority in the house of the mother of a friend of mine. Very surreal.

Did they use your friends bedroom?

Sounds porno. you know...Lesbians?... seduction?

Oh Kat, you have such a dirty mind! No. Wait, actually yes! One of the final key scenes was in the bedroom! I forgot about that!

Actually, and ironically, I have never seen the movie in the US --- I watched it twice on Canadian TV while in Michgan (CBC from Windsor, Ontario). Have never been able to find it to rent anywhere here in Alaska ---- appparently it caused a stink here after being released, as the people and natives involved with it up in Kotzebue did not know the theme of the movie while it was being filmed there. Lesbianism is NOT popular nor well-received by traditional Alaskan native cultures.

You see? Huh? And I have a dirty mind...

I was right...How can you have a lesbian eskimo seducing a librarian and no sex?

Dude, it just wouldn't work. Directorially speaking..Did I spell that right?

Lions to Lambs

was quite moving and startling! Those of us who remained in our seats after the movie ended, "got it'. Those who left right away and complained, still have their heads in the sand.

Blazing Saddles and Clerks 2 have nothing to do with Liberty...

...but they really made me laugh all the same.

In terms of serious movies, I think Spike Lee's "Malcolm X" is absolutely riveting. You don't have to like the man or the choices he made to enjoy the film.

The amazing thing (to me anyway) was the "message" this movie was trying to send in 1942.
