Will Write-Ins Be Counted? Please provide research!

A question was raised concerning whether or not write-in votes will be counted across the country. Rather than look up all fifty states myself, I wondered if the various members of this site from around the country could provide information from their state. Please include links to your state laws if possible.

I will start with Michigan:

Except as otherwise provided in this section, the board of election inspectors shall not count a write-in vote for a person unless that person has filed a declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate as provided in this section.

So, unless Ron Paul files as a write-in candidate in Michigan, my write-in vote will not be counted.

This thread is not meant to divide but rather to educate!

Hint: To find the law in my state, I searched for "Michigan write-in election law".

Edit: As JKap posted, state laws do "not preclude me or anyone else in Illinois from exercising their own independent thought, principles, judgment, and conscience and writing-in Ron Paul if we so choose." This thread is about educating voters so that they know what exactly their write-in vote means in the coming election.

Votes may count or maybe not

What is going to count this time around is a very large group of people uniting with CFL and Ron Paul and whoever else wants to join the Revolution in saying enough is enough!! It is happening everyday.Impeachment hearings, fighting FISA, supreme court rulings for gun owners, protests, marchs, events. No turning back.

let's add the caveat

And let's add the caveat that most Ron Paul supporters have little confidence in Stalinist-style elections which employ black-box electronic balloting running proprietary software that effectively renders the counting of votes secret. So none of us can be sure that a given vote for a ballot-qualified candidate will be counted across the country.

Illinois State Law

According to Illinois state law:

A candidate for whom nomination papers have been filed as a partisan candidate at
a primary election, and who is defeated for nomination, is prohibited from being
listed on the ballot at the General Election as an independent candidate or as a
candidate of another political party, and may not file a declaration of intent to be a
write-in candidate at that General Election.

So Ron Paul cannot run for President in the state of Illinois unless he wins the Republican nomination.

that does not preclude writing-in the best candidate

But that does not preclude me or anyone else in Illinois from exercising their own independent thought, principles, judgment, and conscience and writing-in Ron Paul if we so choose.

No, It Does Not

You can still write-in Ron Paul, but you should be aware that that vote will not be counted. Even if every citizen wrote in Ron Paul in November, he would not win the state.

If every voter had written in Ron Paul,

then all of the state's delegates would probably vote for Ron Paul, even though they wouldn't be officially be Ron Paul delegates.

so too should you

...as so too should you be aware that any given vote for a ballot-qualified candidate is "counted" in secret using black-box proprietary software. So only God and a private corporation will know if it is "counted" or not.

good thread

Let's stick to the supported FACTS about writing-in Ron Paul, not conjecture or rumor. Please cite the original source of your research as often as possible (in most cases that means providing a link, or a reference to another written work, etc.).
