Ron Paul Floor Speech on Iran & Foreign Policy

Ron Paul gave a speech on the House floor today condemning the "virtual war resolution" soon to be considered by the House of Representatives. This bill already has 208 co-sponsors, and will likely be voted on after the 4th of July holiday. A related bill is being worked on in the Senate, with 29 Cosponsors. Many of the cosponsors are Democrats. Who says the Democratic Party is the anti-war party? Here is the video of Dr. Paul speaking out forcefully against this resolution, sadly to a nearly empty House chamber.

It is time for Americans to join together against this insanity. Please take the time to understand your representative's position on this resolution, and let him or her know that the American people do not want another war. Below is an unofficial transcript of Dr. Paul's speech:

Today the Dow Jones Average was down 350-some points, gold was up $32, and oil was up another $5. There is a lot of chaos out there and everyone is worried about $4 gasoline. But I don't think there is a clear understanding exactly about why that has occurred.

We do know that there is a supply and demand issue, but there are other reasons for the high cost of energy. One is inflation. In order to pay for the war that has been going on, and the domestic spending, we've been spending a lot more money than we have. So what do we do? We send the bills over to the Federal Reserve and they create new money, and in the last three years, our government, through the Federal Reserve and the banking system has created $4 trillion of new money. That is one of the main reasons why we have this high cost of energy and $4 per gallon gasoline.

But there is another factor that I want to talk about tonight, and that is not only the fear of inflation and future inflation, but the fear factor dealing with our foreign policy. In the last several weeks, if not for months, we have heard a lot of talk about the potential of Israel and/or the United States bombing Iran. And it is in the marketplace. Energy prices are being bid up because of this fear. It has been predicted that if bombs start dropping, that we will see energy prices double or triple. It is just the thought of it right now that is helping to push these energy prices up. And that is a very real thing going on right now.

But to me it is almost like deja vu all over again. We listened to the rhetoric for years and years before we went into Iraq. We did not go in the correct manner, we did not declare war, we are there and it is an endless struggle. And I cannot believe it, that we may well be on the verge of initiating the bombing of Iran!

Leaders on both sides of the isle, and in the administration, have all said so often, 'No options should be taken off the table -- including a nuclear first strike on Iran.' The fear is, they say, maybe some day [Iran is] going to get a nuclear weapon, even though our own CIA's National Intelligence Estimate has said that the Iranians have not been working on a nuclear weapon since 2003. They say they're enriching uranium, but they have no evidence whatsoever that they're enriching uranium for weapons purposes. They may well be enriching uranium for peaceful purposes, and that is perfectly legal. They have been a member of the non-proliferation treaties, and they are under the investigation of the IAEA, and El Baradei has verified that in the last year there have been nine unannounced investigations and examinations of the Iranian nuclear structure and they have never been found to be in violation. And yet, this country and Israel are talking about a preventive war -- starting bombing for this reason, without negotiations, without talks.

Now the one issue that I do want to mention tonight is a resolution that is about to come to this floor if our suspicions are correct, after the July 4th holiday. And this bill will probably be brought up under suspension. It will be expected to be passed easily. It probably will be. And it is just more war propaganda, just more preparation to go to war against Iran.

This resolution, H.J. Res 362 [listed as H. Con. Res 362 online] is a virtual war resolution. It is the declaration of tremendous sanctions, and boycotts and embargoes on the Iranians. It is very, very severe. Let me just read what is involved if this bill passes and what we're telling the President what he must do:

This demands that the President impose stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains and cargo entering or departing Iran, and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials.

This is unbelievable! This is closing down Iran. Where do we have this authority? Where do we get the moral authority? Where do we get the international legality for this? Where do we get the Constitutional authority for this? This is what we did for ten years before we went into Iraq. We starved children - 50,000 individuals it was admitted probably died because of the sanctions on the Iraqis. They were incapable at the time of attacking us. And all the propaganda that was given for our need to go into Iraq was not true.

And it is not true today about the severity [of the need to attack Iran]. But they say, "Yeah, but Ahmadinejad -- he's a bad guy. He's threatened violence." But you know what? Us threatening violence is very, very similar. We must - we must look at this carefully. We just can't go to war again under these careless, frivolous conditions.

The tactics haven't changed

Incredibly, people have succumbed to circular reasoning/thinking about our foreign policy. "We're winning, they attacked us at 9/11, we had to stop this threat, the troops' lives must not be in vain from the war on terror . . ." The circular reasoning is as simple as "they're a threat, and we have to win, because they're a threat, because FOX says so". On the contrary, we've made things worse by empire-building. I sure admire Ron Paul's gut for speaking out against our foreign policy. More Americans need to see that it is our DUTY to hold our leaders accountable for their foreign policy, which ought to be OUR foreign policy! More need to see that the sinking of the Lusitania, Pearl Harbor, and 9/11 were all incited by our government to put us into three disastrous wars. Col. House who controlled Wilson engineered the Lusitania disaster; FDR deliberately put Japan into desperate economic straights and kept Pearl Harbor unaware of the many warning signs until it was too late; and the Bush administration was working with the CIA to create the 9/11 disasters. It's Germans, Japanese, Middle Easterners, etc. all being made to look like the real devils, when it was always our top officials.

The future

Boy, it sure looks grim for the future, when we're deliberately creating conflict. Is WWIII coming as a result? I hope not. The resolution advocates economic war that rivals the horrendous resolutions against Germany at the end of WWI. The globalists benefit from this, because after WWI, they got a League of Nations. After WWII, they got AMERICA in the United Nations. And after WWIII, one world government? The disastrous policy towards Iran that's being voted on is the same kind of thing FDR did to Japan in 1940 to put Japan on a war of conquest for economic survival.

Where do we get the moral authority?

There are lots and lots of evil political leaders. The logic to destroy the country they rule (and its inhabitants) is beyond insane and hence the real motives are self-serving greed. I am insulted that our representatives assume we are as shallow as they and presumeably we are idiots as well.

Powerful speaker

I have heard people critique his speaking skills as not the best. Not true. He once again will go on record at another pivotal point for our country representing our Constitution, his convictions and truth. He will go down in history as a true Patriotic hero. President Ron Paul; it has such a natural good ring to it. Maybe it is destiny, against all odds. I love this man for his high standards and will support him whatever course of action he moves forward with.

powerful speaker indeed!

i totally agree with you. ron paul is an excellent speaker. and he speaks truth. he speaks truth to power.

Great article by Pat Buchanan on the coming war

http://www.lewrockwell.co...

From the article -

Tuesday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Adm. Michael Mullins left for Israel. CBS News cited U.S. officials as conceding the trip comes "just as the Israelis are mounting a full court press to get the Bush administration to strike Iran's nuclear complex."

Vice President Cheney is said to favor U.S. strikes. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Mullins are said to be opposed.

Moving through Congress, powered by the Israeli lobby, is House Resolution 362, which demands that President Bush impose a U.S. blockade of Iran, an act of war.

Is it not time the American people were consulted on the next war that is being planned for us?

manystrom: important news for us and Ron Paul

You/We know about Vincent Bugliosi who recently published a book about the Iraq war and the Bush administration. He had an interview with Scott Horton at antiwar.com also. He goes much further than McClellan or Kucinich and calls for the prosecution of Bush/Cheney. Now take a listen to this short clip: http://www.youtube.com/wa...

He mentioned a southern conservative GOP congressmen who voted for the Iraq war who listened to the audio of his book, called Bugliosi and convinced Bush lied and spreading the book to collegues and will hold a conference call with him soon. This can be huge! This is the very thing - along with McCain's lower polling - that can lead to a "revolt" in the GOP and get most of them to support Ron Paul and the truth!

We know there are 13 congressmen who have not endorsed McCain plus another 17 that has not indicated any support (yet), so that is a basis. Dr. Paul should also hold contact with sen. Chuck Hagel, who was a friend of McCain, and will not endorse McCain or Obama, so that he can use his influence. Hagel, who voted for the war and also for further funding, but critical of the Bush admin and against the war, is also strongly against any possible war with Iran.

War!

The good news:

RP was right on!

The Bad news:

RP got on average 6-8 percent of the vote. That means 92-94 percent of our citizens at most want these wars or at the very least don't give a hoot.
When you put ineptitude's in charge what more can you expect?
It seems the most we can do collectively is post these comments. All citizen comments posted or emailed to elected officials are either put in the delete bin or they fall into a giant shredder. After hundreds of dollars to the RP campaign I could not get any response to just one question. Valuable lesson learned for me. Bottom line; These people will not listen to 6-8 percent of the population so you better prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Until we go flat on our face broke (just like the other evil empire USSR) this will probably continue.

Where do we get the moral authority?

OK, so the good doctor inspired me tonite. This is a holy man. Make no mistake. There is no moral authority....IF they had the bomb...IF they could take out Israel...IF they could afffect American interest we shoud be ready to take them out, but to do so pre-emptively and take out innocent lives is SOOO wrong and so morally deprived that I cant even finish the sentence. God help the USA.

HJ 362

This is why I wrote my Congresswoman about 362 (BTW she is a sponsor). This was her response.

Dear Faron:
Thank you for writing to me with your concerns of possible military action against Iran . I appreciate your taking the time to share your views.
I am alarmed that the Bush administration continues to raise the possibility of a pre-emptive strike against Iran . Our experience in Iraq has demonstrated the clear need for Congress to protect and fulfill its Constitutional responsibilities in matters of war and peace. As you know, I voted against the Iraq war in 2002. I did not believe the Administration's arguments for military action then and I do not perceive any profound reasons now. I stated to the President then that we need to exhaust our diplomatic options.
Congress needs to play a role in shaping our nations foreign policy and the President should welcome our input. We must work together to figure out a way to bring Iran back into the international community.
Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Please know that your comments and questions are always welcome. I look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Sincerely,

Eddie Bernice Johnson

E-mail to Ike Skelton (MO, 4th, D)

Vote No on HJ Res 362, Do not support HJ res 362. If this was done to the US, the US would consider it an act of war, so why should we do this to another country that is NO threat to our National security, and is incapable to cause the US any harm.

What is the constitutional authority that gives congress the permission to make such a resolution?

"incapable to cause the US

"incapable to cause the US any harm"

I wouldn't even give 'em that much. India is "capable" of causing this country harm. So is England. What the capabilities of a country are is not the point. As soon as you go there, it becomes an endless and pointless circular debate as to what a country "might" be able to do militarily. The only thing that matters is what a country actually does. Right now, the US is starting the wars.

That is such a good point

It's like we all forget that Iran has never threatened us, period.

"We will never give up. We will never give in." - Dr. Ron Paul

Dr. Paul was visibly upset tonight

And rightfully so. It's a dam shame just about everyone else left the room. Those that left probably don't care, or they support another war. It upsets me very much, that they are allowed to leave before the session is officially over after the last person speaks.
