Atlas Shrugged -- Read it? Ready for movie?

Ron Paul discusses Ayn Rand and Atlas Shrugged with Dartmouth students in this youtube video, saying she influenced him but was more militant than he and other libertarians tend to be.

He notes that she didn't like libertarians, which is true, but that's mostly because her ex-lover Nathaniel Branden was associated with them.

Have you read the book?

Are you exicted about the 2009 movie (I'll believe it when I see it)?

I like ashley Judd better

I like ashley Judd better than Anglelina as Dagny, my blood would not just stay in the middle all the time :) What's up with Rand obsession with blondes? Books are wine, movies are sodapop

I hope this doesn't get

I hope this doesn't get made. There is no way it would do justice to the book.

Power To The People?

Picture of Angelina

This link is to her response to question about how the movie is coming along a year ago. Since then i believe the director they had has moved on, so we are in limbo again.

The book is better than the movie is likely to be and better still are Ayn Rand's essays- For The New Intellectual; The Virtue of Selfishness; Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal and her The Objectivist Newsletter.

"I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine" Ayn Rand in Atlas Shrugged p731

John Todd's introduction to Atlas Shrugged....

The book was ordered written and produced by Philip Rothschild, the leader of the Illuminati in his day and age. It was ordered written by a woman named Ayn Rand. She was, at that time, one of Philip Rothschild's mistresses, http://www.kt70.com/~jame..., Atlas Shrugged ALSO DESCRIBED HOW THEY WOULD BLOW UP GRAIN MILLS, how they would derail trains. Their sole purpose is to bankrupt their own companies and destroy their own companies until they destroyed the currency of the whole World, and still be so financially strong they would withstand it!, http://www.kt70.com/~jame...

Yeah I am excited

And what man would not be with Jolie starring in it!

I read it

It had some interesting ideas, but the characters were so self centered. The story did keep me going all the way through. I understood what she was getting at for sure- but they were all just so egotistical, it just bugged me. This was the biggest book I have ever read, it was a feat, but worth it. Did anyone else feel similar about the characters? I don't think this will make a very good movie, have to leave too much out, so....

While Atlas Shrugged is an entertaining novel with great ideas

Fortune Favors the Bold

the characters are entirely one dimensional, more like political cariactures then flesh and blood people. I think this makes what could otherwise have been an amazing novel into merely a very good novel.

There is also a something slightly fallacious in Rand's conclusion. While extolling greed as a virtue, she does not reflect enough on the fact that she herself is speaking of greed with moral boundaries. All the characters in the novel were moticated by self-interest. The collectivists like Orren Boyle, were acting in what they perceived to be their own self-interest.

Also, all the heroes sound like they're mainlining meth. :)

If you want to read somthing a bit shorter

Fortune Favors the Bold

check out "Anthem" It is a fantastic and compelling attack on collectivism

The story is an excuse

The story and characters are an excuse/vehicle to present the philosophy in novel form.

I agree with much of her philosophy, but I think she had some serious psychological and/or emotional problems, and these are reflected in her characters.

One might say Ayn Rand's IQ/EQ ratio was probably very high.

Read it back around '98.

Read it back around '98. Definately a life changing experience. You would be accurate to say that Atlas Shrugged led me to Ron Paul.

Things are only impossible until they are not.
-- Jean Luc Picard

How the heck are they going

How the heck are they going to deal with John Galt's 68-page speech in a movie? Somehow I just can't see it happening, yet to leave it out would be a travesty.

Fountainhead

They greatly curtailed Howard Roark's speech in the movie version of The Fountainhead, and Gary Cooper clearly did not understand what he was saying.

Considering Rand was heavily involved with that production (and wrote the screenplay), and how poorly it came out, I'm not too hopeful about Atlas Shrugged.

A hundred-hour mini-series... maybe. But one two hour feature film? No way.

Thanks for the reading material...

My eyes really began opening in college after reading the works of the economist, Milton Friedman. I'm going to go to the library and check this monster, literally monster, of a book out.

Your going to want to buy it...

Theres so much to highlight and refer to - a library copy just wont suffice!

Yes!

This book was the start of my awakening about 15 years ago - and ive been hoping for this movie ever since (id also like to see michael crichtons "state of fear" made into a movie) and if jolie and pitt are libertarians under those UN clothes they wear, i can deal with them starring in it.

Been waiting since 2004!

I've read the book

don't care for the movie cause they will do the same to it that they did to "The Fountainhead" and some other books liked by other authors. The sad thing is that the book is about to become reality on a global scale.

Angelina Jolie was in the running for the role?

There's some speculation about that on the IMDB link. That's not a good sign, Jolie is a socialist-leaning liberal...

THAT is very interesting,

THAT is very interesting, because Angelina Jolie was recently inducted into the Council of Foreign Relations.

SUPPORT OUR FOUNDERS' AMERICA
Support the Constitution of the United States

Don't be so sure that Jolie is a leftist

Her father, Jon Voight, leans right and is a pretty cool guy all around. Be careful who you label and tear down, mateys, the last thing we want to do is turn potential allies against our cause because we alienate decent people for no reason.

Think about Jolie and her husband and the industry of their chosen career. They may not wear their true feelings on their sleeves for good reason, you never know. Another poster has said that they are Ayn Rand fans. Heck, Brad Pitt starred in "Legends of the Fall" (for example) which has a them that fits nicely with our Revolution and is anything but pro government, and I have never heard any public statements of his that would suggest he is a leftist. Same w/ Jolie.

Be careful

Fortune Favors the Bold

of attributing simplistic paradigms to complex individuals

Here's why I think she is

I know Jolie has done some work for the UN. (Ayn Rand herself thought the US should withdraw from it) And she is heavily involved in Africa.

Here's an excerpt from a John Stossel article "Angelina Jolie visited a model village in Africa to promote what she believes would be possible if our governments would just give more."

That is liberalism.

She's exercising her

She's exercising her freedoms, while you cast stones. Take a hike.

One might even surmise that

One might even surmise that Pitt has been doing research for his role with the work he led in New Orleans with experimental low-cost green architecture for the residents there.

I heard that over

a year ago - but can't remember where I read it.

Have the book on CD and listen to it while traveling. Heard all 10 CD's at least 5 times!

well that sucks...

i live my life by very few rules. but one that i plan on sticking to is not seeing any movie Angelina Jolie is in. i think i saw that crappy "thriller" she did with Denzel back in the 90's. since then i think i've seen some clips of her showing her cans. the previews of her new assassin movie made me about piss myself from laughing. i don't think it's supposed to be a comedy though

are you sure?

Jolie is a socialist-leaning liberal? Are you sure? I don't have any information supporting or refuting this claim, do you?

She and Brad Pitt are big Rand fans.

He wanted to do a remake of The Fountainhead -- not sure what happened to that.

I read the book

but I don't have much confidence in Hollywood doing it justice. They tend to want to rewrite everything and that destroys the intent of the book.

agreed, but

Agreed, but the intent of the book is to provide context for the speech which would probably take five hours alone with no cutting (100 pages at 3 minutes per page...).

I just hope it's okay enough to inspire more people to read the book.
