Supreme Court Decision on Gun Ownership

Why has no one else posted on this momentous decision?

This looks like a major decision IN FAVOR OF LIBERTY and in favor of our Constitutional right to bear arms!

Don't tell me none of you have been paying attention!

Because it wasn't as momentous as everyone thinks it was.

Scalia did a Kelo on "shall not be infringed".

See http://muddythoughts.blog...

Thank you SCOTUS.

For doing the absolute least you could possibly do. Leaving needlessly open to interpretation that which is already perfectly clear and ignoring the operative and applicable verbage contained in the amendment. Clearly this decision was, in almost every way, avoidence of responsibility on the part of the court, and I believe purposfully so in order to allow renegade lawmakers the ability to continue running roughshod over the second amendment which, by the way, already clearly enumerates rights of the people.

"...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

For me, this is just another example of a branch of government purposfully making every effort possible to muddy the waters and make things one hundred times more complicated than they are. Perhaps it would be well to consider that there may be a good reason why the court has never taken it upon itself to interpret the second amendment.

Read it!

Oh! Could it possibly be because it is already perfectly clear and no interpretation is necessary?

What the court needs to be busying itself with, where the second amendment is concerned, is striking down every existing law which in any way, shape, or form does infringe upon the peoples right to keep and bear arms. That's their job!

I know it seems as though I'm never satisfied with the way government handles things. If you should be one who feels that way, please allow me to put all doubts to rest...

To this point... YOU'RE RIGHT!

Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

provided an accurate, concise summary of what the decision really says. Although I still count the decision as a "W", I'm not enthusiastic about it. The affirmation of government's authority to register guns is distressing.

Heller Decision Reaffirms Most Gun Controls

After an initial assessment of the Supreme Court's Heller decision, this decision may go down as the court ruling that stops gun bans but protects gun control.

Though we'll have a more comprehensive analysis of the case later, there is some good -- and a lot bad -- in the SCOTUS decision:

- It reaffirms the Second Amendment as an individual rights, and is unconnected with service in a militia
- It overturns trigger lock laws as unconstitutional
However, it reaffirms the ability of government to license, register and regulate all types of firearms.

In short, it gives a green light to all forms of gun control except the banning of entire classes of arms.

Again, we'll have a full analysis shortly.

This hit DP immediately upon release

and received a fair amount of discussion.

They had to come to that decision--------------

HYDROMAN

Think of what would have happened if they had not!

clickit or ticket and kindly hand over your guns.

Not celebrating...

because I actually read the Supreme Court's Decision. What good is gun ownership if you have to obtain a license & register it to carry it?

yes...i agree...

licensing is for control...which the gov is to have no part of, when it comes to 'arms'.

can someone tell me what "lawful arms(weapon)" is??? the weapons the people of the revolution had and used were state of the art for the time...why are we not allowed state of the art weaponry to defend ourselves???

Supreme Court Decision on Gun Ownership

There's nothing momentous about it. It's as it should be.

Besides, we're too busy stocking-up on food, non-perishables, ammunition, bullion, and gasoline in preparation for January, 2009. Or haven't you been paying attention?

Not momentous?

If there wasn't anything momentous about it, then I submit you have nothing at all to talk about on this web site. Do you believe Ron Paul has already been elected president? "Everything is as it should be"? You're dreaming, pal.

Not momentous

Apparently, something I wrote caused FreeRonPaul to experience a significantly large stick up his arse. So, allow me to clarify my comment to help clear the matter. The 2nd Amendment in 1791 was momentous. In contrast, some dipsh_t judges in 2008 simply validating what we already hold dear as citizens' rights is trivial.

I think they just meant that

I think they just meant that the supreme court just ruled as they should have.

If a burglar does NOT break into your house tomorrow, are you going to celebrate the fact, and call it a great day?

How about we look at it this

How about we look at it this way... the robber who has been breaking into our house for the past 30 years just got caught.

Better analogy: The burglar

Better analogy: The burglar who has been staring into your windows at home and threatening your family for decades was just arrested by the police ---- but he may be back on the street at any time.

Sadly, I have to agree with

Sadly, I have to agree with you.

So what it boils down to is that, by a narrow 5-to-4 margin, the Supreme Court decided to declare a portion of the Constitution constitutional. Forgive me for not celebrating harder.

5/4 split...

yet 7 of the 9 were nominated by republican presidents.

WTF?!?!

How does mccain/supremes matter, again???

You're still making the

You're still making the mistake of assuming that there is any fundamental difference between Republican'ts and Democraps, or who appointed any given Supreme Court justice. Both parties are just two sides of the same counterfeit coin.

This has most certainly been

This has most certainly been on here before, for half the day..I can not find out who voted against this.. Can anyone? Bush appointed 4 justices, and I would like to know who voted against this one and habeas corpus...

Hey Crickett

Majority: Scalia, Roberts, Kennedy, Thomas and Alito
Dissenters: Stevens, Souter, Breyer and Ginsberg

I'm not absolutely certain, but I believe it was exactly the opposite with the habeas corpus ruling, with Kennedy as the swing vote. What a country! All of a sudden I'm a big fan of Justice Kennedy. What's up with the rest of them? Too busy playing their scripted roles of "conservative" and "liberal" justices?

A big win

A little scary 5 to 4 but non the less a big win. Just think if it had gone the other way.....I think there would have been alot more discussion.

True enough. But this should

True enough. But this should be celebrated as a very good thing for America. I'd like to see some more positive talk instead of the dominant negativity for once.
