The Power Of Television "PROGRAMMING"

I have not watched TV for 16 yrs (except DVD's) and a couple years ago I watched a season and a half of "24" on DVD's. At the time I could not tolerate the contrived anti-terrorism propaganda and constant just missed you or didn't quite make it scenarios(like soap operas). Recently after our county convention at the end of March when we were arguing whether water torture was acceptable on our platform (amazing huh?) one man in his 40's got up and said "I LOVE JACK BAUR!" Then went on to extol the attributes of this fictitious character's ability to get his job done. it was at this time that I realized we are in deeper doo doo than I thought. After contemplating this scene in my head for a couple weeks I began to realize Obama's rise to fame was part of that shows "programming". Then I see this, this morning and realize TPTB don't even care that we realize it and the actors that help with the programming very likely don't realize it themselves. (or maybe they do)

The Way Back Machine

As an alternative, go back in time. Everything old is new again, especially to audiences who have never seen the originals.

Visit Hulu and/or TV Land for some classic old shows that you might want to share with your young'uns. The Andy Griffith Show, Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie, I Love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, heck even the Three Stooges are there, plus a lot more.

Also go check out Miro, the free, open-source internet TV and video player for tons more viewing options. Grown ups, definitely check out the TED talks there, and you'll be pleased to learn that there are five dedicated Ron Paul channels, plus 31 channels that run Ron Paul videos. Find THAT on your cable network!

And did I mention that you can create your own channel on Miro? :D

I think

Fortune Favors the Bold

TV, because of the suspension of self involved in the vicsarious nature of the medium (as oppossed to say, reading, in which the self is engaged more actively in interpretation) lends itself to appeal to the lowest common denominator. To be fair, there has been some good art created through the medium, and that of cinema, but the entire visual medium suffers from a glut of decadence, i think largely as a result of the application of Walter Scott's psychology of advertising principles to override artistic concerns.

Turning the television set

Turning the television set off is real power.

Idiocracy

There's a comedy called "Idiocracy" that serves as a good satire on this state of the nation.

Glad to see you still around...

drop me a line sometime soon!

LOL

I watched this movie with a friend, he asks me "Could you imagine what it would be like living in a world where it seems like the whole society is really dumbed down and was on the brink of self destruction??"

I shook my head and laughed deeply. "I live in that world everyday" I replied.

Hey Poodle ;)...I thought of some more..

Children are being conditioned by the following acts through cartoon programming. ie

Insults, name calling, screaming, emotional outbursts, adult humor, bathroom humor, violence, gross out stuff, and images and story lines that would entertain nothing more than a crack baby with ADHD.

These are just some of the prime time cartoons, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Chowder, Ed, Edd and Eddy, etc.

Oh I can't stand any kid

Oh I can't stand any kid cartoons! You know it would be great to have someone like Breaking the Matrix or Revolutionary Broadcasting start thinking of kid based programs (I'm starting to hate that term). Kids are the most vulnerable, and we need to offer them something. It's like trying to keep your kids off sugar or other overly abundant taboos in this society, it isn't going to work well unless you raise them completely isolated or you have a reasonable substitute.

Ever seen Liberty's Kids?

Fortune Favors the Bold

It's a pretty good educational cartoon about the revolutionary war times. It also takes on various events from multiple perspectives.

Liberty's Kids Linky

You can watch five of the episodes here. Walter Cronkite as Benjamin Franklin; Billy Crystal as Sam Adams; added-in characters to help kids relate to the events from their perspective.

It's nice to view these online with the pause feature, so you can discuss issues at length with kids as you watch with them.

I just showed episode 11 ("Postmaster General Franklin) to my kids the other day. We discussed their thoughts and feelings on the matter presented, and I asked in unbiased terms whether they thought the British were being "right" or "fair" in what they were doing (I like them to come to their own conclusions during lessons). I then explained (in somewhat simplified terms) the current FISA issues to them, and in the same manner, asked whether they thought that was "right" or "fair." They put their hands on their hips, and responded by hotly quoting from the first amendment, "Redress of grievances!!"

My kids are 6 and 8. Perhaps we should direct some adults to watch these episodes, eh?

OH YEAH!!

The cartoons and movies they are shoving down the throats of these kids are disgraceful, and they had problems with LOONEY TUNES? gimme a break! 90% of the movies now "for children" are geared for adults and I can't believe the things they say! My kids won't be watching that crap.

I noticed something

I noticed something interesting about conversations with people who are regular television watchers "teleheads"; it's very difficult to have an actual dialog of true communication with a television watcher. It seems that the best communicators are home schoolers who don't watch much television. It is an absolutely amazing difference. Try this simple test. Ask a "telehead" why we need the Federal Reserve and what would happen without the Fed. Then ask a non "telehead" the same question. You may get wrong answers, but I've found that non "teleheads" will continue to think about an unknown subject and continue dialog. Sometimes they'll even ask for more information. Most "teleheads" will brush off unknown subjects and start talking about the latest movie.

I definitely will try that

I definitely will try that experiment. Here's something I noticed. When a telehead asks me "Have you seen that (fill in the blank) commercial or sitcom?" When I tell them I don't watch TV Almost 100% of the time I get a complete "non-compute" look. It's amazing people really don't know where to put that information. I never say it arrogantly, and I don't insinuate they shouldn't either. Watch people when you say this their reactions are telling.

An interesting commercial I Saw

Razorwind Studios is an official endorser of Ron Paul, and we will live free or die! 14th alternate to MN state!

The U.S. mint has been trying to peddle their .999 fine silver coins of various styles... and today they were trying to sell a FRN shaped coin with an image of the twin towers on it.

I think it may be subliminal advertising in order to get people who know the truth about money to cave in to the fear of terrorism or some BS like that... I just don't really know what to think anymore other than I should believe the opposite of whatever the TV is suggesting >^_^<

TV is entertainment, not reality

They don't call it the IDIOT BOX for nothing. Read a book.

maybe he loves those CSI geniuses too...

Borat's 'rise to fame' was the result of multi-media programming. We have been told he is to be the next president since early '06. We were also told from early '98 that bush pt 2 was to be the president.

I havn't seen any television since 10 years ago

and not much in the last 37 years of married life. We do not have television service now, but we did get the Jericho series,on DVD and despite some of the typical hollywood-like stuff in it, it seemed that there is some truth in it. Did anyone watch this, and notice that the toughies, (merceneries are called Ravenwood, (like Blackwater). And that some of the companies are just like today, running the govt. in a fascist way, like today. And the head of the Dept of Homeland Security is similar to Chertoff?

Kansas.....

Yes, we watched/recorded Jericho also. Its one of the few shows that were resurrected after being cancelled, due to audience out-lash. We also watch LOST...alot of conspiericy theories here too. We watch the local news.....noticing that only the victims names change daily (murders, fires, accidents). Its interesting to watch 'the enemy' when you've had your eyes opened.

24

That's the kind of show that I would run across sometime, and within 30 seconds I'd start yelling at my T.V. and then my family would think I'm insane.

I prefer cartoons.

WOW...

That is some deep insight. I haven't watched TV for about 3 months now. First time in my life. It is amazing the difference in thought process that has taken place.

Previews

of a new show have been coming on. I think it's called "Flashpoint" Looks like it could be a tool for desensitizing the public to marshall law. We'll see?

you mean like...

- being desensitized to decomposing bodies, cutting them up, looking inside - CSI

- police bulllying and brutality without any regard for rights to get the "truth" out of people - Law and Order for at least the last couple of years

- the importance of winning money, having what you want right now - Deal or no deal, etc etc and Oprah and her rah rah giveaways

thank you for the comment chonk123

C'MON folks lets make a list. How has TV desensitized the population?

oops and thanks to krmaya for a great topic

:-\

I can think of some...

How about the way MTV etal. glorfies vulgarity, rudeness, emotional outbursts, female sexual exhibition, and violence..Not to mention shows like "jackass" which put stupidity on a pedestal..:)

Yes Stupidity on Jackass. Shamed to say I like it.. Dunno why, but I guess I wish I could have been a moron and made millions.. Then I'd have solar panels, wind generators, and a few 1000 acres in a safe little haven. Hmm to late for older guys to be stupid?? Oh yeah I'll run for office!! I've found my calling! yippie!!

So true...

and all the ditzy entertainment shows - there must be at least six on prime time every day telling us every detail over and over again about the important people in the world, you know Brittany and Jamie Lynn Spears, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan and on and on and on, and about their sex life, their acne, lack of underwear, weight, baby weight, shoes, run-ins with papparatzi, drug and alcohol use, rehab, houses, cars, bankruptcies,

Folks these people are your royalty. Get used to it.
