Less reason to attack Iran now

Lately, we've seen much increased talk for the need to attack Iran - no matter that it could lead to World War 3. From Israel conducting "air exercises" to increased MSM reporting on the U.S. readiness to attack. Posts I've seen here on DP range from covert U.S. action already happening inside Iran, which could even launch a missile against one of our own ships in a False Flag instigation of conflict, as well as Cheney reportedly telling the MSM to start "talking up" hostility against Iran in the media. We've seen lots of rhetoric suggesting the administration was under pressure to attack before leaving office, and Israel believes the next administration will not be as sympathetic to them attacking - and all this over fears of Iran's uranium enrichment program in which they might eventually acquire weapons the U.S. and Israel already have, but now this...

Mottaki Says `New Trend' Begun in Iran Nuclear Talks (Update3)

By Ladane Nasseri

July 2 (Bloomberg) -- Iran, which is considering an incentives offer by world powers to halt its uranium enrichment program, said a ``new trend'' has started in negotiations.

``A new trend of change is taking place and it started with Iran putting forward a package,'' Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki was quoted as saying by the official Islamic Republic News Agency.

European governments joined the U.S., Russia and China in offering on June 14 a package of economic and technology incentives for Iran in exchange for the suspension of uranium enrichment. The sensitive fuel can be used in a reactor or for building weapons.

``Important issues for talks were mentioned in this package and from the other side the 5+1 group delivered its own offer,'' Mottaki said yesterday in New York, referring to the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany.

Iran has put forward its own proposal to resolve the conflict, diminish the nuclear threat worldwide and improve security in the region. European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana told reporters on June 14 in Tehran that topics are ``compatible'' in the two packages, yet measures put forward by Iran were ``not sufficient.''

``Iran and the 5+1 group's packages have a good work potential,'' Mottaki said. The parties may ``pinpoint common points in the two packages and start talks'' on this basis, Mottaki said, according to IRNA.
...

I wonder if this will be covered in the MSM today.

in 1939...

1938-9 there where many peace actions by Benito Mussolini a fascist leader of Italy...

get the grasp of reality.

I don't undersand what you're suggesting

Is it that diplomacy is never the preferred answer?

true diplomacy is the way

I am making you all aware of the fake one!

I am saying

that all was staged all was a theatre for the masses>
a Joke!

Public theatre, yes, but seeing

as how theatre (remember Collin Powell's U.N. Iraq WMD performance?) can lead to real world events, I'd say theatre must be considered as well.

Duce Mussolini

he would gather gold wedding bands in soldiers helmets and show them to the huge crowds in Rome.........master propaganda to rally the sheep for war........

I disagree

No...Mussolini really did want to have peace talks, he was not ready for war.

well..

I lived in Italy 4 years I do truly believe that Duce Benito wanted peace as a strategic political advantage...........and then war total war when he saw Germany winning

to gain more power in Europe and especially Africa

Benito was an opporitunist

He was very flexible...he tended to blow with the wind, which is probably why he survived so long as leader of Italy.

He didn't care what he did...so long as it kept him in power

Mussolini

Italy did not start the war..Italy was not ready for the war...Benito was desperately trying to stall Hitler while he could get more prepared.

Reality is...there will not be a war vs. Iran while Bush is in office.

the reality is

Bush is not in office..........never was..........the folks behind him are.

and war can occure at any moment OFFICIALLY
but in my priviate view it is already there we just don't have the information..........

important news

Tell your congresscritters to TALK to Iran, not ATTACK them.

Amen

This is obviously Bush's final chance to save part of his legacy...the push toward talks with Iran were the administration's motivations all along.

Bush was not about to act without congressional approval, and it would be impossible to obtain.

Israel was not about to attack...they never telegraph their punches and are notorious for surprise attacks. There would be no reason to saber rattle against a nation who has a good air defense unless they were bluffing.

We will NOT attack Iran before Bush is out of office...not gonna do it.

you sure about that?

Why are there two war resolutions sitting in Congress about to pass?

If you haven't called, call these people!

It's called posturing

They won't pass a war authorization...won't happen.

Never underestimate King George's stupidity

"Bush was not about to act without congressional approval, and it would be impossible to obtain."

With his 'I am the decider' monarchy, and uncovered domestic spying as well as long list of other illegal, unconstitutional (that "goddamn piece of paper") actions I wouldn't put anything passed him.

Oh, and let's not forget his supporting cast, those corrupt yes-men in congress who continually fund the war and recently gave immunity to the cohort telecoms that assisted in their clear LAW BREAKING with domestic spying.

King George isn't calling the shots

He does what he's told...period.

With all of the pressure on him from the American public, and his dismal approval rating...even the Bush administration wouldn't try it now.

Congress can debate all day...it simply is putting the situation on the front burner by letting Iran know we're ready to fight. We aren't.

The Democrats would not be so stupid as to vote on a war authorization in an election year...the Iran war authorization bill will not see the floor.

Don't fool yourself or be naive

Bush will do whatever he can get away with, as he has already proven. He openly discussed (let me know if you want the video link) his observed need attacking Iran even setting off World War 3 before the documents were publicly divulged showing Iran had halted their weapons program in 2003. So, either Bush was incompetent and didn't know this, or was a liar and did know. Take your pick.

As for the American public. The public that gave him office twice. The public that until recently largely regarded Dr. Paul and his warnings as coming from a kook. The public that remains largely asleep. As for the Congress, the Congress that never impeached him and Cheney, but rather consented to their wars and erosion of our Constitutional rights. I won't be so confident in these bodies to do what is actually right and necessary for saving our country.

Get a grip

Bush is incompetant, that's my pick. Always.

This talking, it's called saber rattling. Bush will not act without congressional authorization. Congress wouldn't authorize anything, short of a nuclear attack on American soil...especially not before the 2008 elections.

Israel won't take any action before that time, only because they're threatening to do so recently. It's not Israel's MO to talk about attacking before they actually do.

This is a bluff, and it has worked.

England was bullied into backing our sanctions, and now Russia has agreed to come to the negotiating table. The Iran retoric will slow down now, and we'll have some diplomatic talks...this will calm down before the election.

The U.S. Congress?

"Congress wouldn't authorize anything, short of a nuclear attack on American soil"

The same Congress (including Hillary Clinton) that authorized the current Iraq debacle? Saddam Hussein might be rolling in his grave disagreeing with your statement.

Democrats...

First of all...the GOP controlled both houses in 2002.

Second...the war against Iraq was still a fairly popular thing to do, since the furor of 9/11 had not died down. Democrats are notorious for voting along public opinion polls.

The political landscape is a very different one today...the nation is very much against another war, and congressmen are not about to vote for a new war, when the White House and both houses of congress are up for grabs in November.

I'll reiterate...congress will not authorize anything against Iran.

I really don't understand

I really don't understand the concern with what Congress will or will not authorize. Bush has made it clear that he will do what he pleases, then let the lawyers sort it out. If the law cannot be made to work for him, then he can always terrorize those who oppose him. Congress is the lame duck!

Things are only impossible until they are not.
-- Jean Luc Picard

Bush won't strike without congressional approval

Bush might be that dumb...but the people pulling the strings are not. They need to cement Bush's legacy that he dealt with the axis of evil, and the president's 8th year in office is ALWAYS about cementing your legacy. GWB needs a "tear down this wall" moment.

The detonating of the North Korean nuke plant was very close to his moment, but a handshake and smile with the Ayatolla would be that moment.

Unfortunately, like Nixon, Bush may be treated much more kindly by history if he can get the framework of a deal done with Iran...and that is what they are desperate to do now.

I totally agree with

your sentiments about political landscape, and I would think and hope you are right... but, the generally blind faith and belief the American people have that Congress will do the right thing is exactly why we are in such a mess today.
