Suicide Terrorism VS Joining the military to die for your country
Okay - I'm not condoning terrorism in anyway but, I just wanted to solicit opinion from the ever so wise Paulites regarding this.
When you join the armed forces of any nation, you are really signing up to die for your country. How is that different from someone killing themselves for ideals they believe that they are fighting for?
Japanese Kama Kazi fighters (alright, that is an extreme example of dying for one's country) vs Suicide bombers who want occupying forces out of their lands.(Al Qaida, Hamas, Tamil Tigers etc...)

I don't agree with your
I don't agree with your point that signing up for the armed forces equals signing up to die for your country.
Many soldiers sign up for various reasons. Some are desperate for money, others want it on their resume, free college education, some with political aspirations do it for that purpose, some don't know what else to do with their lives, some truly are patriotic and want to help defend our nation, etc, etc. There are surely more reasons and obviously many join for a mix of reasons.
In regards to "signing up to die for your country" - I don't believe that is the purpose for signing up but is rather a risk of signing up.
It is an interesting
view. Isn't it also interesting that they want young warriors. To bad their isn't a law that states the President has to lead the men into battle. I think we would put an end to war real quick. Peace
LOL
I just pictured George W leading his neocon buddies, Bill Krystal, Dick Cheney, Condee, Rove, Wolfowitz, Krauthammer, Murdoch, Rumsfeld, Scooter, Abrams, Perl, Higgins, Ladeen and Bill Bennett physically through the deserts of Arabian Peninsula, eating their square meals, carrying all their military equipment, sweating balls wearing the same cloths for days at a time with no shower...THEY WOULD ALL REALLY STINK, INSIDE AND OUTSIDE.
human nature
It's part of human nature to get all wrapped up in the drama of group identity.
If your group has a well maintained army to join, you can express your allegiance by joining the army. If your group has to use the guerilla tactics of terrorism because of a limited budget, you can express your allegiance by joining the terrorists. There's practically no difference in the psychology of either individual.
It's especially interesting to note the behavior of mothers: in both cases, the mother of a dead soldier/terrorist gets all dramatic in her patriotic fervor and assumes that her dead son or daughter has achieved some glorious religious outcome.
Human nature is pathetic.
When You sign up for the
When You sign up for the military You become a Pawn of the rich elite. We are all peasants but We will not become pawns unless We volunteer for the draft. I for one will not KILL to make the wealthy more wealthy. As I see it I would rather let You start a fight and goto the woods and let you defend You're self. It's funny how the elite are so brave when they have their peasants but piss on themselves when the peasants are gone. I wish one day the peasants would wake up and not fight for the elite ever again. Oh but wait there will be plenty of hate going around because the elite know how to foster and grow it. Just watch the news and it will let you know that 100% of the arab population are suicide bombers that want all whities to die.
Smedley Butler
Anyone who liked your comment here would enjoy reading about Smedley Butler. Use either his name or "war is a racket" as search words.
ajwyoming Yes
I absolutely loved his comments. No one should be allowed to profit during war. Everyone should make or receive the same salary/income which the troops are making. (There would be no more wars).
After all we are a country at war, everyone should sacrifice.
Forwarded it (for a second time) just yesterday to family and friends. I am thinking of printing it for my fellow condo dwellers. Maybe put a copy in the laundry room.
Ditto
I agree 100%
supposedly
On the soldier are checks, balances, reasoning, defensive purposes that are absent with the terrorist. But in our corrupt world, the lines are very blurred.
What about
civilians who kill soldiers? Wouldn't they be called a terrorist if they killed a US soldier in Iraq?
How is that different than the citizen militia who killed English soldiers in the American Revolution?
I think the person raised a very fair question. When governments kill, it is patriotic. When individuals kill, it is terrorism. Throughout history, all the great killers have always been governments. Individuals have never been able to rack up enough money to do what the armies of the US, Russia, and Germany have been able to do.
An act of defense is just whether or not performed by a gov. or individual, and an act of agression is unjust whether performed by a government of individual. That is why the word terrorist is so important for the statist. It demonizes all non government sanctioned violence. How convenient.

"Terrorism" is war for the poor.
"War" is terrorism for the rich.

Actually a simple answer.
terrorists kill innocent civilians. Soldiers fight other soldiers.
Suicide bombers who blow up troops are not terrorists, they are soldiers.
Those pesky terrorists
How dare they try to fool us by acting like they are cultivating a field. And the stupid guy trying to wave a flag, what does he think that will get him. Thank god our brave military is protecting us from these obvious terrorists. I'm glad we aren't killing any inoccent farmers over there.

"The day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the wicked will be stubble"
Are you implying that if a suicide (i prefer homicide) bomber
intentionally targets a civilian establishment (such as a market or pizza parlor) They are actual terrorists and not freedom fighters? Most of them do, you know. If so I can see your point.
