Declaration of Independence Facts
Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed
the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the
British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their
homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the
Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56
fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.
They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their
sacred honor.
What kind of men were they?
Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine
were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated.
But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well
that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton
of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from
the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay
his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the
British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He
served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding.
His possessions were taken from him,and poverty was his reward.
Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer,
Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Rutledge, and Middleton. At the battle of
Yorktown, Thomas Nelson Jr, noted that the British General Cornwallis
had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged
General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and
Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties
destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few
months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was
dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his
gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in
forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his
children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a
broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates.
Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution.
These were not wild-eyed, rabble- rousing ruffians. They were
soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they
valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they
pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on
the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each
other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." They gave you
and me a free and independent America. The history books never told
you a lot about what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't
fight just the British.
We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own
government! Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but
we shouldn't. So,take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July
holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for
the price they paid.
Remember: Freedom is never free! It's time we get
the word out that patriotism is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has
more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games.

Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you.May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

The Signers
Where are the signers of the day? These men exemplify the spirit of commitment that true patriots should aspire to, and our cause is increasingly demanding of us. Freedom is that most precious of all gifts and the great guardian from the shadows that ever encroach upon mankind. We should all cherish Freedom with all of our hearts. If we are not willing to sacrifice for our cause, we may be sacrificing our futures and all those futures to come. We may indeed, in turns, one day face the same calling, if not a more significant one, as did the signers of that greatest of documents: The Declaration of Independence.

This is one of my favorites--I have read it in church on 4th of July weekend, and I always try to find it and pass it along this time of year!
At least they're not remembered as terrorists.
If we had lost the Revolutionary War, every signer of the Declaration of Independence would be remembered as a terrorist.... if they were remembered at all.
It's bad enough that so few Americans recognize the heroic nature of what those men did.
...Yet.
Remember that the Left wing of the New World Order---which will soon be abusing power in Washington with the same zeal BushCorps has in the past eight years---does not like or respect the Founders very much. They call them racist slaveowners and diminish them in their rhetoric.

It is about time that the concept of human sacrifice be reexamined! To be loyal to your highest values is not sacrifice. I suggest that everyone interested in understanding read The Virtue of Selfishness by Ayn Rand. The first chapter should suffice.
Be loyal to your values. Never give up higher values for lower ones.
Read Atlas Shrugged to experience heroes who struggle to be loyal to their values as the story dramatizes the contrast between two philosophies, one of which is rational, with a rational view of existence and a moral standard of Man's Life on Earth, while the other is the irrational one which has prevailed and is at the root of all the bloodshed, slavery and tyranny in the world thoughout history.

In the same dictionary lies the definition of *gulch*: a deep or precipitous cleft:

Honestly, I find great comfort that there are keyboard philosophers among us who can espouse others' idealism from the comfortable saddles atop their high horses. As for me, I shall tend to my family and my liberty and happily admit that you cannot ride a chicken no matter how small the saddle.

It strikes me that our usage of the word "moron" is getting abstract these days. The argument can certainly be made that Rand was "self-absorbed", "arrogant", and I would add, "cold" and, occasionally, a "bore". But having read through over 900+ pages of her hyperverbosity in Atlas Shrugged, I would say that if you think Ayn Rand was a moron, you don't know the meaning of the word 'moron'.
If Rand was a 'moron', George W. Bush is an 'intellectual', Jimmy Hoffa was 'ethical', and Bill O'Reilly is "soft-spoken".

I understand what you're saying, but I disagree. As far as I'm concerned, Rand, Bush, and O'Reilly are all complete morons. I don't know much about Hoffa except that he's buried under the letter G, I, A, N, T, or S. Ayn Rand could split the atom for me. If she was the same actual person, I'd still believe she was a moron. Her personality is what makes her a stupid and foolish person. Great intelligence does not negate the possibility of someone being a moron and vice versa. In other words, as Ben Franklin once wrote:
