McCain’s ‘Econ Brain’: America Has ‘Become A Nation Of Whiners’; Recession 'Mental'

Thursday, July 10, 2008 In an interview with the Washington Times today, former senator Phil Gramm, who is Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) “econ brain,” blamed the state of the economy on “the conviction of many Americans that economic conditions are the worst in two or three decades.” “You’ve heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession,” said Gramm.

Gramm decried the “constant whining” of the American people when it comes to the economy because he believes “we’ve never been more dominant”:

“We have sort of become a nation of whiners,” he said. “You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline” despite a major export boom that is the primary reason that growth continues in the economy, he said.

“We’ve never been more dominant; we’ve never had more natural advantages than we have today,” he said. “We have benefited greatly” from the globalization of the economy in the last 30 years.

Reminder:

Hitler and Saddam, as well as about every president the US ever had, constantly insisted a profound economic was either evident or “just around the corner” (sort of like the notion that we’re somehow making headway in Iraq). How many times will these messages be reproduced?

Almost all our elected morons are just begging to get lynched.

McCain = Gramm

Oops, I just might get arrested!

Are they all smoking crack in DC? Talk about not being in touch! It's time to throw out all the garbage.

Of all the nerve

Sounds just like John McCain. "It's your attitude that's the problem, not our actions." McCain was recently in Canada saying that those who opposed NAFTA need to get a life. Of all the nerve! But he gets away with it because Rothschild wants him to be elected. If more people knew who the Rothschilds were, they would realize that McCain's March meeting in England with them was not just a prestigious gathering.

"The lost causes are the only causes worth fighting for." Jeff Smith on MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON

Can't tell but it looks like McCain fired Gramm for his remarks!

"John McCain sharply broke from an economic adviser who dubbed the United States "a nation of whiners" in a "mental recession...."

"Later asked if Gramm would have a role in a McCain administration, McCain raised the possibility of what could be seen as a less-than-desirable job. "I think Senator Gramm would be in serious consideration for ambassador to Belarus although I'm not sure the citizens of Minsk would welcome that."

McCain Speaks!

Good find, Troy. Here's another article on the subject.

From both articles:

"Phil Gramm does not speak for me. I speak for me." [says McCain.]

Let's see what happens when McCain speaks for himself. Have you folks seen this little ditty yet? Be sure to watch the accompanying video as well as read the article. Bring out your stopwatches.

How many here are homeless,

How many here are homeless, or have had to catch rats for food recently?

We all could be there.

I have a couple of rat traps in my bug-out bag. Somehow I'm hoping for chipmunks though.

Exactly ,,,

And dumpster diving is great fun . Remember the family that dives together stays together. By the way homes are overrated ,,,sleeping under the stars is romantic.

inflationist

Gramm is a neo-keynesian/monatarist apologist for the banks. He is an inflationist. He has no theory to explain economic downturn so it must be something wrong with "those people". Even if he really did understand the Austrian theory of the trade cycle he couldn't say so because he represents the financial elite that benefit from inflation.

FOLLOW-UP: InSane Distances Himself from Gramm's Comments!

InSane sure is putting a lot of "distance" between himself and his own hand-picked advisors lately...

McCain Campaign Distances Itself From Gramm's "Nation Of Whiners" Comment

Excerpt:
The McCain campaign is distancing itself from national campaign co-chair and top economic adviser Phil Gramm's claim that we're in a "mental recession" and are a "nation of whiners." The campaign has just sent us this:

"Phil Gramm's comments are not representative of John McCain's views. John McCain travels the country every day talking to Americans who are hurting, feeling pain at the pump and worrying about how they'll pay their mortgage. That's why he has a realistic plan to deliver immediate relief at the gas pump, grow our economy and put Americans back to work."

In a sign that the McCain campaign is worried about having to own Gramm's comments, a McCain campaign official tells me that McCain himself will address Gramm's comments to reporters on his plane today.

If he is sincere he would dismiss Gramm.

otherwise it's just Gramm publicly stating what the campaign is thinking. Don't fall for it.

If

If he were sincere, he wouldn't be McCain.

: rimshot! :

Here, enjoy this little cup o' McCain.

You got me there, good shot!

Any ideas how he will spin this? That is, keep Gramm on while disagreeing with his beliefs.

Maybe I'm completely wrong

Maybe I'm completely wrong on my memory of this, but wasn't Gramm the one who stopped RP from running for US senate a bunch of years back? Gramm was and is an establishment guy and as we all know the good doc isn't, so we know how that goes.

la la la la la I can't hear you, economy; la la la

"We are a nation of whiners."
"We are in a recession (or depression)."

These two statements are not mutually exclusive.

Idiots...bloody idiots....

I've only seen a few McCain bumper stickers on cars but I can't imagine why anybody would put a "I'm a dunce!" on their car?

Wow

John McCain..who makes 200k a year really has room to dictate to me what my reaction should be to an economy that he is to blame for...god damn elitists..

Don't forget

the $58,000 plus he gets a year from the military for being 100% disabled!
Gee, I could pay my bills and have a lot left over from 58k a year.
I have seen a lot of elections that the choices were bleak, but this is totally beyond description.
And please don't tell me about the lib, const, or indep parties or write in. It doesn't exist in my state.

they are not...

can you say President Obama?

O Captain, My Captain, rise up and hear the bells!

It's sad

Keynesian economics requires consumer confidence to be high in order to sustain GDP, so given that we're not on the Gold Standard its important that American consumers stay confident to pull out of our current situation.

Unfortunately, it's just a sleight of hand. America's value has never been on its exports. We generate value by getting things cheap from around the world and turning them into useful products to be used at home (i.e. we buy CDs from China, but generate the music and movies that have significantly more value).

Exports are up because the currency is so cheap. It's unfortunate that most Americans don't know that high exports is always going to be a bad sign for an economy based on service, information, and innovation.

I was frustrated when I lost 3-4% of the value of the money I've saved because the Fed started printing money to bail out the banks, but now we're losing solid American companies like Anheiser-Busch to foreign companies exercising currency arbitrage. We're never going to get those companies back.

...sad

How true

Thanks for the informative post. I recently converted my dollars to silver. It feels great to hold real money, plus it gives me something else to do on the internet. I'm constantly watching my silver increase in value @ kitcosilver.com

Phil Gramm

is one of the legislators responsible for the easing of regulations which led to the subprime fiasco and the meltdown of the entire US economic system (it's not over). He should be exposed for what he is and he should stop blaming the victims of his reckessness. There is a NPR broadcast which does a very good job explaining the events leading up to where we are now. If anyone is interested I will try to relocate it and post the link.
