As 300 fires rage, California to get foreign help

LOS ANGELES - FIRE-RAVAGED California is awaiting the arrival of foreign firefighters from as far away as Australia to help battle more than 300 blazes still raging across the western US state, officials said.

'Additional firefighting resources (personnel and equipment) are expected to arrive shortly from Australia, Canada, Mexico and New Zealand' to help hold the line against relentless wildfires that have claimed the life of one person and scorched a record amount of land, said the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Calfire) on Saturday.

According to Saturday estimates, 322 fires are still active, with 1,459 contained out of a peak number of 1,781 blazes, but authorities said the highest 'red-flag' warning remained in effect through Sunday in northern California on account of gusty winds and low humidity.

'Weather conditions have been much more favourable,' said Captain Julie Hutchinson of Calfire. 'But we still have a few days to go before we have a comfort level that we have the whole fire under control.'

The raging fires claimed their first fatality on Friday, when sheriff's officials in Butte County discovered the burned body of a person inside a home gutted by flames in Concow near the town of Paradise, some 144 kilometres north of Sacramento.

More than 130 firefighters from Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand were already in California or on their way, joining in the fight under mutual aid agreements among the countries, the officials said.

Greece, where the United States sent crews to help fight huge fires last year, was also sending firefighters.

We sure do appreciate all the help! The fires are slowly but surely being put out.

This is the kind of assistance

We should be giving each other. California is getting a lot of help from other states, too. It is a very frightening time and I am thankful that other country's resources are willing to help us out when we need it. Why is it that we think we are always the one to do it?

Yes, this is a great thing.

The fires have been burning for almost a month, the smoke outside is sometimes unbearable. On some days you can't jog, bike, or anything althetic unless you want to inhale tons of smoke. And since the weather in some parts of California has reached 107 F (41.5 C) with winds so that's not helping. Plus the fires are raging all the way from Eureka (near Oregon) and even some near LA that's over 400 miles, so I welcome any help from firie fighters.

When Australia's fire season gets out of hand,

we often get US firefighters flying over to help out.

It's the "code of the firefighter" and it's an honorable thing.

You should have seen how Aussie firefighters grieved over their lost US brothers and sisters.

Please don't turn this into anything other than it is -- a gesture of friendship (or "mateship" as it's called here) .

yep, i agree.

canadian firefighters go to. in other emergencies, so do rcmp, paramedics, etc.

Yeah, and the

Trojan horse was also a gesture of friendship. We question when troops are deployed under the name of safety onto our streets for "training purposes" It wise to stay vigilant in matters such as these. Many times tyranny has been used under the word "safety" maybe, they want us getting use to the idea of foreign troops in America.

Complete trash.

They are firefighters sent to help and train in the off-season (for NZ and AUS). You have completely lost the plot.

Get used to foreign troops? Where? In the middle of a burning forest? Yea, that's where my family and friends hang out.

God, I'd hate to be your neighbor.

You wouldn't last a minute in my neighborhood.

They dont like bullies no matter how much training you have had or how bad you think you are. I really dont care what you think anyway, because not everyone shares your views. The point I was trying to make, IS the idea of using foreign troops to battle forest fires gets the public USE to and conditioned to the idea of foreign troops on our soil for the good and benefit of all. First firefighting, tommorrow border guarding and next year fema camp trainees.
