We have been going thru our own

little personal depression, as my husband is a builder and work is very scarce. Beside being late on the bills, just surviving is becoming a struggle. So, we are becoming aware of the most important things: We already have a little solar power, (not on the grid), and generator broke (how we get our water from well). Our primitive rainwater collection (buckets lined up under the eaves for watering the garden) system is handy. That's also where friendly neighbors come into importance.Food stored up is coming in handy, and vegetables from the garden are absolutely comforting. And my chickens, despite hiding eggs occasionally are still beloved for that daily organic free range egg breakfast. I am being forced to learn how to repair things like generators. And now am thinking of other ways to make some money. (Ebay is really turning into a nightmare). I end up paying more for shipping than I get, if you count gas, and time away from the garden. Making friends with hunters, (or hunting oneself) definately paid off, as we have all that canned meat and jerky stored up. Of course it is a bit depressing having to eat all that stuff, before it may get worse. But at least we aren't starving yet.

Head for the hills - the new survivalists

So what do you do when you're pretty sure that the end of the world as we know it is coming soon, but your girlfriend doesn't believe you? Sure, she might nod her head when you confront her with some of the gloomier facts, but then she shrugs and goes back to her pursuit of modern pleasures. She doesn't like it when you talk about it to other people, either. No one likes being told their hopes and dreams are about to turn to dust.

This is the problem confronting Adelaide aircraft engineer Steve McReady. Sick of trying to warn people who won't listen, he is bugging out. He has sold four of his seven investment properties, and has a fifth on the market. He's putting his collection of 10 classic Triumphs and BMWs up for sale. The girlfriend begged him to keep the BM convertible, but there won't be much use for it in the world he sees coming.

He has bought a property in New Zealand - which he says fares well in climate-change models - and once he gets his affairs in order he'll move there to learn about growing vegies and raising chooks. He wants to build a big shed to stock with all the important things that will become difficult to obtain, such as fencing wire and Band-Aids. But he worries that he's left it too late, and that the world might start getting ugly before he can learn how to make cheese and grow potatoes.

He would have been talking marriage with his girlfriend now if it weren't for all this. "She's a really nice person, great morals, but the lifestyle she aspires to is what most modern women want," McReady explains the first time we talk on the phone. "We're still going out and doing things together. We have talked about this issue but we really haven't resolved it. I'm relying on time. Maybe $2-a-litre petrol by Christmas or if the United States invades Iran ... Perhaps if she saw that what I'm talking about was true, she might change her attitude. But currently I can't see it happening."

Hmm

Can't I just have myself cryogenically frozen and wake up in 20 years? It works in the movies...

Does anyone on here have

any tips on basic survival. I haven't even done camping before but I have a feeling we better learn. Peace.

Buy bullets now...

If things get dicey, ammunition sales will probably be suspended by federal order. The price is already going up. Look into foods that can be stored long term and have plenty of clothes for your environment.

sando, the thing is to make

sando,

the thing is to make yourself as self sufficient as possible.. do you or any of your family own acreage in the country about 4 hours from any major city? next have you purchased any long term storage food?
do you know to shoot? I guarantee you combat handgunning is not as easy as aim and fire! can you keep warm? can you live without electricity? have you purchased any pre 64 silver dimes? and the next question is how much money do you have to spend to do this stuff?
the main thing is to have acreage away from the big cities! next is food, water and protection.. next nonhybrid garden seeds! lots of people forget those! what questions do you have?

as for me and my home, we shall worship the LORD

my biggest question would be

my biggest question would be one of mobility.

imagine living 30 miles away from a city 1 million strong.

all hell is breaking loose, you have martial law in the city and curfews.

fuel is hard to come by.

...

massive fuel stores?

horses?

bicycles?

all the above! as for me and

all the above!

Well

I work for a company that sells portable solar generators. Check them out!
www.mobilesolarpower.net

A lot of our customers are using them for home power out in the middle of nowhere. They are built to last 10+ years before you need to start replacing some of the equipment.

If you could get your hands on ANY sort of electric vehicle, whether it be a golf cart or a scooter, solar power is a renewable and essentially costless source of fuel once it is up and running. You need some sort of battery based system though, as grid-tied solar will not work if power is unavailable through the utility grid!

Growing your own biofuels may be an option for some (sugar beets for ethanol, rapeseed or soy for diesel), although this is pretty unrealistic.

Still nothing wrong with a good pair of shoes and a bicycle : )

Maybe

motor scooters 110 mi. per gal. or motor cycles not sure their mpg. Peace

It would nice to see an active survivalist thread on here, since most of us believe the economy will collapse soon.

But I guess that would cut into our time arguing over creationism versus evolution, the existence of God--and why his name should be taken off our money, and other 'vital issues of the day'.

A survival thread would be great. Here is a question I have: You can buy antibiotics for horses at feed stores, wouldn't they be safe for humans?
