Recession or Depression
So where are we headed in this country. Our govt doesnt even acknowledge we are in a recession. Will we see a depression even greater than the last one? What are you people doing to prepare for a depression if it does happen? I hear of groups forming here in the North east and planning for a depression and martial law. Anyone feeling the pinch with money, loosing a job or a house and what are you doing about it. I know alot of people are buing gold and silver so what else are you people doing to protect yourselves and your families. Anyone own businesses and how are they doing. I think my buisness is off by 30 percent the last 2 years

Recession + Depression creates a hybrid-
Repression
thank you
for all the great info you provided here. I am in the construction industry also. I did have 15 men now down to 6
Here is what I have done...
Because the economy is a roller coaster of sorts headed for disaster, this is a list of what I have done to prepare:
1. Moved to the Smokey Mountains of Western North Carolina. Considered to be a rain forest because it gets 80 inches of rain or more each year. Has more plant life than any other place on the planet and is considered to be the oldest mountain range in the world. I am located in a town which the Cherokee Indian call the "Navel of the Earth". Also Kudzu grows like crazy here and is very eatable.
2. Purchased $10,000 in metals: 5K in Gold Buffalos and 5K in American Eagles. I am in the belief that Silver will out perform gold when metals begin to take off.
3. Purchased 2 crossbows for hunting, 4 cage traps of different sizes and fishing poles with tackle.
4. Purchased 4 rain barrels for harvesting water off my roof and the largest Berkey water tank with filters that they make.
5. Built raised beds for square foot gardening and purchased a year's worth of organic seed for growing. My plan is to harvest the seeds for the following year and organic or heirloom is the way to go because everything else has been sprayed.
6. Purchased several books on botany (wild edibles) and survival skills/tool making.
7. Because of the chance of hyper inflation with regards to energy, I have cut my energy usage by nearly 80%.
For Cooking: A Solar Oven and Outdoor wood burning Tuscan Grill over a fire pit. For the winter, I have retro fit my fireplace with a Spitjack, Tuscan Grill, Lodge Crane and cast iron cookware. This includes cast iron dutch ovens, skillets, kettles ect. And I also bought an 8 cup Bodum (french Press) for making my coffee.
For Heat during winter: Fireplace and medium sized wood burning stove (that can also be used for some cooking). The fireplace seems more adventurous.
For lighting: Changed all my home lighting to 2.5 watt LED bulbs (no amps), Purchased LED puck lights that run on recharged AAA batteries and 3 Solar battery chargers for C, D, AA, AAA batteries (just stick them in the sun). Also purchased 10 oil lanterns at the flea market for $50 and 6 gallons of oil for burning off the internet.
Entertainment and Communication: Changed all computers to 25 watt laptops. Hooked a laptop to the TV using a VGA cable to watch movies. Bought USB powered surround sound speakers and USB LED lights for laptops. Purchased a hand cranked shortwave radio and 2 prepaid cell phones. Board games and books a must. Can listen to music through my laptop or ipod (ipod has batteries which can be charged as well). At the moment I have no cable tv and no regular phone, but have 2 phone lines through my internet DSL connection and all my media/news needs come through the web now ( so happy to have gotten rid of the MSM).
Now in the event that internet gets to expensive, I have built a WIFI booster out of an old satellite dish to hack the nearest tower which is less than a mile a way and the great news is that fellow who owns the company is a friend of mine. He has already agreed to let me tap it in the event of high prices with Verizon.
Power: Currently on the grid but have hacked my meter using 2 rare earth magnets to stall out the spinner...so a very low bill at the moment. If the grid goes down, I have 4 solar panels with portable battery units with built in inverters.
Refridgeration: not needed, learned to live without it now for a year. Occasionally I will buy some ice for cold beer!
Food: 6 months supply. Now here is the trick: IMO and I have had a lot of time to think about this one, I think canned goods are the way to go. Almost no water needed for preparation and I can always add a little rice to the pot to stretch it out cooking in the liquids on a slow simmer. Canned fruits are also awesome if they are in their own juice which can be added to added to tea for sweeting and flavor...yummy! With meats I have purchased smoked summer sausages and packaged fish (salmon). Not a tuna fan because of the high levels of mercury even though I love it. On storage I also have lots of dried beans, lentils, dried fruits, nuts and Clif bars ect. Also plenty of canned veggies too, but not spinach because its too slimy. For my greens, I chose collards because they hold up better when making a soup or stew and they are not slimy.
Also did I mention there is plenty of gmae to hunt here and plenty of wild edibles? Not mention that 2 rivers are with 10 min walk.
Gasoline: Hmmm I have heard the threads here about HHO. Truth is I sell hydro boosters for a living and they do in fact work. For some people they get little gain and for others a lot. I have figured out how to tweak the fuel injection systems along with the HHO boosters for a 50% gain on my own vehicle. Now in the case of hyperinflation, nothing will save you money...try a solar powered golf cart to get around.
Create a Tribe: Get people together in your area who are like minded in the event that the shit does hit the fan perse'. Put your heads together and have a plan. Truth is, it is better to be in numbers for safety than going at it alone. Just be sure everyone is on the same page and pulling their weight.
That is my two cents and most likely I have forgotten something important. But if i think about it I will post it here.
Love Has No Opposite!
Wow now that's a list
Or you could just buy a bunch of guns and become a bad guy and steal everyone elses stuff :) just kidding but I wouldn't be surprized if that's what actually happens.
I'll just move to my office which is in Windsor Ontario Canada untill things blow over.
Yeppers...
Guns are on my list, however I am having some difficulty deciding on what to buy. Most likely a rifle and a handgun. One can never be too over prepared. Also one thing to add to my list that I have forgotten, everything that I have purchased will not go to waist because I am already living as if it has already happened with the exception that I am not currently hunting. I am gathering some already...went blackberry picking the other day with the kids and made a yummy cobbler.

I'm taking my vacation pay now
in case the company goes bust and can't pay it out.. Thank goodness few are aware of the looming hard times or else I'd be out of work now.
You know, I ardently hope we are all dead wrong and the economy keeps chugging along, the dollar recovers, and the FEMA camps are just a PhotoShop hoax. I hope I never have to purchase supplies with silver and gold and that I can donate all my stored food to a homeless shelter. I hope I never have to fire a single round in self defense. Nevertheless I am prepared.
Yeah I've been unemployed
Yeah I've been unemployed for 7 months and I've exhausted every resource across phoenix. When they say unemployment is bad, trust me, its even worse.
Here in boom town(Seattle)
you would'nt know there was any problem.People are still at the malls spending like there is no tomorrow!Ladies still go get their 4-5 dollar cup of coffee, have lunch with the girls and go get their toenails painted,
while the gardeners mow their lawns and the cleaning ladies clean their houses!!!!!!!!They will have a tough time of it when they actually have to do something for themselves!
There's an amazing
amount of construction going on in Seattle. It's still full steam ahead there, it appears.
Having lived up there for awhile
During the birth of the Starbucks revolution and now to hear they just put their list out of closing, oh I forget the exact number it is on the news today( a lot). Not a real alarming bit of news, untill you start connecting the dots of everyday happenings of businesses, jobs. Yes, I see restaurants and clubs filled where I live as well but don't forget human nature is people will look for instant gratification if they feel something does not feel right. There is a saying "when things are good people drink and when things are bad people drink more". I have to laugh at that one.

I should have known you would have the details
Do they have them in Australia and if so are they closing. I have to admit an occasional latte is one of my little pleasures in life with no apologies for the cost. By the way, Lisa I watched your posted 12 videos of Argentina yesterday, and even though a little depressing I found them to be somewhat inspiring and very interesting.
Oh yea, Starbucks is everywhere victory.
Australia was late in the game and we have very few of them. I live in a city of 1 million and I think there are only three and they are downtown.
Should never apologize for enjoying something! Life is too short.
I'm not sure how Americans would fare in the same situation. My gut tells me the only thing Americans would revolt against is higher cable TV prices.

I don't know
If you watched the people standing in line to get their money out of IndyMac you would have seen some real unhappy campers. I don't know, if I were the heads of a bank that had just been taken over I would think that the remaining employees along with the FDIC would have done just a little PR for people standing in line for 10 hours to get their money out like for instance some coffee and donuts. Or say some chairs, and tented areas to get out of the sun. I guess we will see what it takes, cable TV, life savings, or whatever for people to get righteously angry.
Bank closures do seem to bring the people out.
The experience failed to teach them anything. One woman promptly marched over to Washington Mutual to deposit her check (only to have the check refused). I fail to see the point in that. Because they don't understand the situation, they fail to protect themselves.

It depends
how much money you got left, if any after paying the bill, buying gas and food that determines if you are in a recession or depression.
