United Way is here. Your thoughts?

The United Way is in my office this week pressuring people to donate. I am hesitant because I have heard of scandals regarding the misallocation of funds. They are also affiliated with the AFL-CIO and the Pro Israel lobby. I don't like it but they lay the peer pressure on pretty thick every year. Anyone have any more dirt on this organization?

Unless you have SPECIFIC knowledge about a charity---

whether it be to feed the poor children, OR save the earth, OR save the animals, etc. etc.! Just remember that it is to the advantage of the charity to tout a "problem" (that may or may not exist) to extract funds from you----to pay their exhorbitant salary!
Keep your Charitable giving close to home! A $100 bill to a single mom you know to help her make ends meet is going to be used right. A $100 donation to a charity may be used in ways you wouldn't agree with, if you knew!

I Donated to them for years through Payroll deductions

at 3 different jobs, and then when I was forced to retire with a disability from a job that I loved due to getting rear-ended by a 16 year old on a cell phone in a pick-up truck with MINIMAL insurance coverage. After I had exhausted my auto insurance on medical expenses, I called the local branch of United Way and was told they couldn't help me! Gee, thanks a bunch! I was trying to get help to pay for medication I need just to get through each day.
I did tell the lady that I had contributed to them for years, but I will be sure to spread the word about the kind of help they DON'T offer!
I had NO idea they have such shady practices, thanks for posting that! Now I feel dirty for contributing! From now on I will only contribute to Danny Thomas' hospital that treats kids with cancer regardless of their ability to pay for care; they also help the parents with living expenses while their kids are being treated.

What if

What if instead of money I donated my time and educational literature (The Revolution: A Manifesto)? These kids would be market gurus in no time.

I remember the days.....

of having the corporate boss push the United Way on us. The region was expected to have a certain percentage of employees participate.

I did the first year....Then decided I to discontinue. I was not a very popular person (not that I care). I think it's not right to pressure employees to participate in "voluntary" stuff that is completely unrelated to the job. All so the big company can advertise how charitable an organization they run!

I give my charity dollars locally....But did give extra during Katrina/Rita thru a couple of professional organizations to which I belong.

Bottom line: If YOU want to give to UW, do it.....If not, then don't. It's your money and no one else gets to make that decision for you.

I stopped donating...

when they did their full court press on the Boy Scouts. Now I donate directly to the BS of America, and donate nothing to UW. I was a Boy Scout growing up, and trust them more than the United (Nations), I mean Way.

Boy Scouts have changed to Politically correct mongers

I remember just having heterosexual guys at camp-now its whatever goes. ( I know the stereotype of a pedophile scoutmaster but I never saw that).

So now gay men, straight women, gay women, girls, whatever teaches boy scouts survival skills and its all politically correct B.S. pushed by little brained liberals. I'm not bashing a lifestyle or a gender, but there's a reason men teach boys skills about life and survival, just like you don't see a bunch of boys going over to girl scout camp wanting to teach girls-they would have no perspective on how to grow up being a woman. Maybe that's what we should push and see how well its received.

I guess the Boy scouts went wrong when they became an exempt corporation that's beholden to the federal government.

Here's an example of a BAD charity

Their CEO has his own private jet, gets paid close to $400,000, they support things like abortions, corporate welfare, and a whole batch of things they never advertise. They say they help "reeducate" the unemployed, but its mostly felons who are going for police officer jobs.

A converse example is the salvation army that pays its CEO around $12,000 and is much more effective in giving care where its needed.

The United Way is a charity monster that says it does all these great things, but it doesn't and you'll just be paying the CEO's salary and killing babies.

It seems to be a corporate structured

It seems to be a corporate structured collections agency. They come in. Coerce your donation. At my office they are having a luncheon but if you didn't contribute you cannot attend. Then they distribute the revenue with the exception of the $515,000 they pay the CEO. Sounds more like a pyramid scheme than a charity.

My wife's work is forced to have a United Way Liason

She got scammed her first year because she's a nice, helpful person and decided to help out a charity. Then she found out its money goes towards planned parenthood and she dropped the position.

The United Way is a scam, and if they ever try to get my money I'll them.

They come in acting all high

They come in acting all high and mighty and act like your money really belongs to them and you should be thankful they're leaving you some.... when I tried to stop them from deducting from my check I had to go through a lot of red tape... rudest people I've ever encountered.

Instead, donate to dvds4delegates... it will be way more worth your while!

just say no!

Your comment about peer pressure is telling.
Several people I know work at a Department of Energy managed
nuclear facility and say the same thing, donate/participate or your carrier is
in jeopard.
Thanks for the info on who they are affiliated with.

Just a few clicks on

the web and wikipedia and bingo. It's not secretive. The AFL-CIO encourages its members to invest in Israeli state issued bonds.

Charity begins at home...

I've never trusted the 'national' charites....look at all the missing $$ the Red Cross lost after huge donations after 9/11. They also screwed up at Katrina. Local churches use the funds and volunteers at a faster pace and with better results. Find something in your home town that may appeal to your own interests...like a battered womens shelter, an animal shelter, or perhaps a school that needs help. Forget the Big Names. Tell the United Way people, that you already give to better run organizations.

although local orgs

may not have the resources to help for certain types of things.

Here's a website that "rates" charities

This is for "national" United Way, local chapters may vary (look them up separately)

Just tell 'em you already donated your maximum to Ron Paul! ;-)

charitynavigator can take a hike

"This Top 10 list contains some heavy hitters in the nonprofit sector. Each of these charities had total expenses greater than $500 million in its most recent fiscal year. Their combined total expenses are approximately $10 billion. We offer this list because we believe it is enlightening for donors to realize just how large many of America's charities are and why we believe it is important that our country establish a federal regulatory agency to monitor and regulate charities"

charities are important

and charity watchdogs like this are very useful. It seems the united way is a fairly efficient charity. There is also the factor of wheter you think there programs are useful.

It seems the United way is mainly focused on coaxing kids to do better in school. For some, this might be worthwhile. For me, I would rather donate to someone like Doctors without borders, which provides emergency medical relief for disaster victims in third world countries.

Wow

I can really appreciate privately funded relief efforts. How do I contribute?

Humanitarian Action
Video

On the Medical Frontlines: Introduction to MSF
MSF's work is based on the humanitarian principles of medical ethics and impartiality. The organization is committed to bringing quality medical care to people caught in crisis regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation.

MSF operates independently of any political, military, or religious agendas. Medical teams conduct evaluations on the ground to determine a population's medical needs before opening programs. The key to MSF’s ability to act independently in response to a crisis is its independent funding. Eighty-nine percent of MSF's overall funding (and 100 percent of MSF-USA's funding) comes from private sources, not governments. In 2006, MSF had more than three million individual donors and private funders worldwide.

MSF is neutral. The organization does not take sides in armed conflicts, provides care on the basis of need alone, and pushes for increased independent access to victims of conflict as required under international humanitarian law.

MSF's principles of action are described in the organization's 1971 founding charter, which established a framework for its activities

Bingo!

RP did get some cash from me and I couldn't be more proud of my contribution. He inspired so many this year.

They came and told a story about a 15 year old girl who smoked pot, drank alcohol and dressed funny was behind in school. Thanks to the United Way she got her GED and now she is pretty and works in a nail salon. WTF!?! I'd like to see the bill for that success story.

now she smokes, drinks and works in a nail salon

she could have done this without UW agency money

haha

that reminds me of this dude in Utah who was singing the praises of RTCs (gulags for Kids) he was like, man they saved my life. I would have been in jail if it weren't for them. Now, I've been working at this gas station for twenty years.

locally

The UW is a very liberal org, supporting a few private, but mostly taxpayer funded (mixed) liberal orgs. None that I have ever chosen to support privately. I have never supported the United Way for that reason. If there are one or two orgs on your local UW agency list, at least here you can choose to have your donation go to those orgs only.

I make my own charitable decisions. You could take the forms and info and say I'll look it over. Or, no thank you, not at this time.

Just donate directly to charity of your choice

If a charity is on the UW list for your town, and it is one you like, just cut out the middle man and send your checks straight to the charity of your choice, rather than paying UW to funnel the funds and take their cut, which may go toward things you may not like or agree with.

The people at the top make

The people at the top make big bucks. The money comes from donations.

The last presentation I attended set forth the statement that,

if you don't donate to us, then we'll get the money from taxes. I've wondered how I can work that idea into my own sales presentation.

I support voluntary donations, but the intimidation tactics are something that has always left a sour taste in my mouth.

I remember years ago when I

I remember years ago when I worked for UPS, they'd come around close to Christmas every year with the UPS management. No direct threats were ever made, but you got the message pretty clear. Donate, or else. I also remember that there was a huge scandal with the CEO of United Way's huge compensation package and "three" count 'em, THREE Private jets! I'd say screw em. If a corporation wants to donate to a charitable cause fine. I have no problem with that. Just don't expect your employees to share in your philanthropy. They have a right to their own.

My point

My point was really a political one. I just don't think I can donate to a cause, even one with good intentions, if they take a political stance in opposition to my own. This collection of charitable organizations buddies up with the AFL-CIO and the Israel Lobby.

Do as you please

Personally, I think they are not worth my money.

Any organization that needs to lay the "heavy hand" on people to "encourage them to donate" is not going to get my money.
