Again, another journalist with an agenda, but not as bad as the ABC journalist/blogger posted earlier. Ms. Damon fails to mention that this is not just a "Ron Paul" group, but there are McCain supporters involved, too. Again, it is not mentioned that to change the method of voting for delegates required a 2/3rds vote...which means that many more than just Ron Paul supporters voted for the change and not to put in the pre-selected nominees. The use of words like "disaffected," "insurgent," "a crowd of Ron Paul supporters...forced" all the same message from the media.

Paul supporters sue to stop GOP panel from picking delegates

A group of disaffected Republicans trying to get to the national convention are asking a Reno judge to halt the party's efforts to appoint a national delegation in a private conference call scheduled for Friday.

Dr. Wayne Terhune, a Sparks dentist leading a contingent of Ron Paul supporters, said the state party broke the law when it canceled the reconvening of the state convention planned for Saturday.

"They are illegally appointing delegates behind closed doors in private phone calls," Terhune said Monday. "State law says you have to have a convention."

Terhune filed suit Monday in Washoe District Court to force the state party to submit to the Republican National Committee the list of 31 national delegates elected at an insurgent state convention in June. The Nevada Republican Party has refused to recognize that convention as legitimate.

Party officials abruptly called off the state convention in April after a crowd of Paul supporters captured control of the proceedings and forced a rule change that appeared to be leading to a slate of national delegates who wouldn't be supporting John McCain, the presumptive nominee.

The party planned to reconvene this month but said not enough delegates to the original convention said they could attend to reach the required quorum. Instead, the executive board will decide how to appoint delegates during a conference call Friday evening.

Zachary Moyle, executive director of the state party wouldn't comment on a pending lawsuit but said the party hasn't changed its plans.

"We haven't even been served yet," Moyle said Monday afternoon. "All of our plans are the same."

Joining Terhune in the suit are most of the national delegates elected at the insurgent convention.

The 20-page complaint accuses the party of "egregious violations" of the rules during the April convention, including naming an unqualified chairman who was "clearly not neutral."

Paul, a Texas congressman with a strong libertarian bent, came in second in the Nevada caucuses behind Mitt Romney. Although Paul has suspended his presidential campaign, his supporters aren't ready to concede the nomination and are intent on infusing the state party with their political philosophy.

Terhune said the group also will challenge the state party's slate at the RNC level. Republican Mike Weber, who was chairman of the insurgent convention but not a Ron Paul supporter, is filing the challenge.

But Terhune questioned whether they would receive a fair hearing within the party confines.

"I would hope we are going to get a real fair hearing in district court," he said. "As to the national, I just do not know. Mike (Weber) seems to think we'll have a shot. I think we have a better shot in district court."

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, chairman of McCain's Nevada campaign, said the decision about which slate to accept should rest with the RNC.

"The decisions made by political parties are made by political parties," he said. "Not the courts."

But he urged the executive board to include a few Paul supporters on the state delegation.

"This is about electing a conservative as president, and that is John McCain," he said.

But Terhune said he doesn't plan to line up behind McCain if he makes it to the national convention.

"I'm a Ron Paul guy," he said. "I would probably vote for him if the opportunity is there."
