Can anyone confirm this? --Mountain House out of food--
Part of my new daily routine is listening to the Patriot Radio News Hour after I get off work.
Today's show: http://allamericangold.co...
A caller called in on today's show and said the following to the host:
"[...] just wondering if you happened to see the article today that the largest food storage company - Mountain House - totally out of food for '08 and all of '09 - big orders from the military and the government and other big organizations [...] wiped them out completely"
(Fast-forward to 5:30 to hear the call)
Does anyone know what 'article' he's referring to? Can anyone confirm this?

Greed, think of it this
Greed,
think of it this way! if you purchased 5000.00 dollars worth of this same food in 1999, do you know what it costs to purchase the same food today!
12,000.00!!!!!!!!!!!! so when people purchased this food in 1998 and are still eating today and saving money... who is smarter???
as for me and my home, we shall worship the LORD
eating food that's 10yrs old?

For what it's worth...
I've been buying consistently over the years from these guys, and I haven't seen this many items on backorder since Y2K...

Like I said, for what it's worth - I just placed another order - in any case, it's pretty good chow...
Bulk ammunition might be another wise purchase... ;)
[edit] Upon further consideration - with jobs and wages down, taxes up, $5/gal diesel, $4.50/gal heating oil, and food prices, generally, through the roof (i.e. - ex food and energy) - one might say "Join the crowd"...

Just curious, what
Just curious, what percentage of your food comes from these bulk food distributors versus the grocery store?
Hi Cable...
It all depends on the weekly sales at my local Shaw's/Hannaford's/Rite-Aid/CVS... I spend quite a bit of time scanning their website's "weekly flyers" for deals. I only buy what is a steal from them. If it's cheaper from beprepared, then that's where I buy it.
For instance, I can get bulk rice at my local store for 50 cents/lb, so that's where I buy it. Bulk sugar/wheat/spices are cheaper through the web.
Bottom line - probably 10% of our daily food is from the web - that doesn't count the surplus, just-in-case, stock in my basement... That is probably more like 50/50.
With a big pile of sons and not a big pile of cash, I've learned to buy low - what my wife calls "looting" the big chains... For a while, I was actually getting paid to "buy" Chunky soup. I made 10 cents/can. We had hundreds of em... :)

Me? Pretty much just
Me? Pretty much just grocery store and eating out at restaurants with friends. But I've been wanting to start some kind of bulk food storage program and rotate it so that I'm more self-sufficient and less dependent on 'the system' in case of catastrophe.
Nahh no conspiracy here.
Nahh no conspiracy here. These companies are up and down. Before Y2K there were a few extra's making MRE's, but they slow down or change product lines. This economy shift has been rather quick so there would be an increase in buying.
at the risk of being called
at the risk of being called a doomer..... YOU had all better buy all you can!

No, you sound like someone who is doing a favor for
the government or the Federal Reserve by saying something like, "Please, spend, our economy is 75% consumer economy."
The sales pitch seems to change from Y2K to 9/11 (remember we were supposed to shop to defend the country?) to the energy crisis and now to food shortage. But, there seems to be one common message, "SPEND!"

we'll see if you have that
we'll see if you have that same opinion next April!

I think some of the items are worth buying from
a common sense point of view and depending on your budget and needs, but personally, I don't think I should go on a crazy buying spree.

Hurricane preparedness too.
Stock up on dehydrated stuff and mix it yourself. It's more affordable.
supply
From their website:
"We want to clarify inaccurate information we’ve seen on the Internet. This situation is not due to sales to the government domestically or in Iraq. We do sell products to this market, but we also sell other market segments, including Ingredients and Private Label markets. The reason for this decision is solely due to an unprecedented sales spike in #10 cans sales." http://www.mtnhse.com/mm5...
The wonderful thing about free enterprise is that they will, if they choose to, find or even create another company to fulfill the demand. Seems like an excellent entrepreneurial opportunity for someone with deep pockets. Make some burritos, will ya?
The goobermint
is preparing for the coming disaster, so that they can all survive.
They're buying this food for themselves, on the money that they steal from us, which we could use for our own survival.
Just like any red-blooded tyrant would do.
I don't think so. My take is that this is a deception to
stimulate consumption. In my opinion, it is done much like during the Y2K to prevent a deflationary collapse. If food shortage is so serious, they wouldn't be pushing E85, in my opinion. It's all bogus, in my opinion.

It's only in the Mountain House Freeze-Dried line.
I am very close friends with one of the largest Mountain House distributors in the country.
I asked him about this a couple months ago when the info first surfaced.
It's true info, but they don't reveal who the mass-purchaser is.
I'm pretty sure we all know who it is, and why.
The gov't is pushing E85 for a totally different reason(political), and if E85 really catches on, there WILL be a food shortage, and not just in one brand of freeze-dried storage food.
It will seriously effect every aspect of the food market..
And why do they want to do that?
In my opinion, it is because the demand for food is expected to drop because of the aging population in the western nations and because of deflation.
In my opinion, the demand for commodities are expected to drop in the future.
In my opinion, these things aren't bad if it wasn't the debt based money system, however, debt based money system requires perpetual growth to function. Once the growth stops, the entire financial system is likely to result in a deflationary collapse, in my opinion.

True
...but only the #10 cans. Pouches are still available. Go to their website for the explanation.
Did you think you were the only one stocking up???
I may not know the truth, but I know when I'm being lied to...
I noticed
The shelves were pretty bare yesterday at my local sportingoods store. Better get it now!
They are accepting orders at:

Out of Stock
I clicked on the food storage section and it said out of stock on everything from main dish to dessert.
I ordered another 7-day pack and it went through.
I got a confirmation of the order and, thus far, nothing from them indicating that there would be a delay in shipping it. That's not absolute proof that they are not low on some other items of course, but then I didn't attempt to order any other items.

There are other sites where you can still order dehydrated/freeze dried foods.
