Important information about Energy Saver lightbulbs!
Representative Ted Poe (R) of Texas talks about the energy bill recently passed by Congress that bans the sale of incandescent bulbs by 2014 and touches on how it Congress has no business regulating something like this. Strike up another failure for bureaucracy!

Seems I read awhile back that these bulbs are only manufactured
in another country??? And that some congressman benefited by outlawing them in the U.S. (probably owns stock in the company)
I don't have time to research and find the article---So I am passing on the info so someone else can report on it.
We switched over to CFL
We switched over to CFL bulbs maybe two years ago. I would approximate our energy savings to be in the area of $1,000 over that time.
The CFL bulbs are brighter and seem to give off less heat. There is absolutely no 10, 20 or 30 second waiting period for them to reach max brightness with the bulbs I use. I flick the switch and they are on 100% immediately.
Imagine if every home in America, roughly 100 million, used these bulbs and saved $3.5 billion monthly / $42 billion annually. All that savings would recirculate back into our economy in other ways.
I don't agree whatsoever with Congress interfering with our free market and taking incandescent bulbs off the market. A free people should have the freedom to choose what is best for them.
And beyond all that, CFLs will only have a very limited lifespan because LED technology is far superior and much more energy efficient. Once the prices on LED bulbs comes down I believe the CFL bulbs will no longer be as popular.
BTW, I didn't know how toxic the CFL bulbs were until reading some other comments here. It just so happens that 3 weeks ago I broke one for the first time (it rolled off a shelf and hit the floor.) Ugh......
Another Govt mandated product with terrible health risks
Read this article from NPR before you start letting your family begin handling these toxic bullets, especially if they're broken, or open a package of these bulbs and read the warnings in detail... it's shocking to say the least.

I read somewhere that due to international environmental regulations these new bulbs are currently only being produced in one nation, China, but can't find the link right now.
Boycott WalMart... they have 0 factories in the U.S. and more than 500 in China... yes, WalMart has over 500 manufacturing plants employing thousands upon thousands of workers all so that they can undercut and undersell fair and ethical businesses trying to operate within the economic infrastructure of the United States. This is the real danger of international trade agreements as explained by Peru's President:

Thanks, again, CSPANJunkie
Better you than me. I don't think I could stand wading through that much government to find these gems.

...this is horrible
incandescent bulbs are easier on my eyes, fluorescent ones give me migraines.

Ted Poe was on the plane with Dr. Paul
I wonder where he came up with the idea?

This is SO not the business
This is SO not the business of Congress. Why in the H do they keep passing bills that infringe on our liberty?? And that while doing NOTHING to increase our peace, prosperity and defense.
Some things make me glad I am old.

Look that up and understand, the mercury is there for a reason.
Just not the reason you thought.
Look deeper. You won't believe.
Please...
Do go on to explain.
We bought some of the new bulbs.
They are awful. They have to heat up before they turn all the way on.
This is reminds me of when they switched to water-saver toilets. People were smuggling in toilets that actually worked from Canada.
There may be a black market for light bulbs in the future. Something to think about. lol
True
I've tried the bulbs, they need about 10 seconds to get to a reasonable light level, and maybe 30 seconds to reach maximum. They also cannot be used with a dimmer at all or they will generate a tremendous amount of electrical noise which is heard the TV, for example.
"The wicked flee when no man pursueth, but the righteous are as bold as a lion."
I'm working
with some other engineers on a reasonably priced LED lighting controller that drives very highly efficient LED bulbs at a very small fraction of the energy cost to drive an incandescent.
Also includes variable dimming capability via PWM.
Interfaceable with computerized automation systems, and/or can be used by pushbutton light switches manually.
The initial release of the product is already on the market as the "EcoDimmer" by Omnipotence.
It's early in the market yet, and some of the LED lights for the home are not quite as bright or inexpensive as some would like.
We see rapid advancement in LED technology, so we are positioning ourselves into the market early. I suspect very bright and more affordable LED lamps for the home will be available even by the end of this year, and certainly within a few years. Some Japanese carmakers are already using LED headlights in their cars for the Japanese home market, and it will soon be common here in the US too.
LED is the obvious choice because it has the lowest energy consumption, non-hazardous construction and non-hazardous waste, and very long lifetime of bulbs. It's the wave of the future in lighting. Less energy footprint, no mercury, lasts so long it won't fill up landfills with dead bulbs.
And, it operates on low voltage, so it's a perfect match for solar powered homes and other alternative energy systems.
Yeah, LED is definitely the
Yeah, LED is definitely the way to go.
Please let us know when your LED's are ready for sale. I'm very interested.
Thanks,

The pursuit of liberty is addictive... Let's make it contagious.
The mercury in those lightbulbs
is so dangerous that you have to leave the room if one breaks and yet they put mercury in vaccinations!Figure that one out!!!
I think the main point is
I think the main point is that we're suffering once again from regulations that were created without proper research by people who have no business regulating what kind of light bulbs we buy in the first place. Congress is once again stepping out of their bounds. Capitalism will automatically phase out incancesdents when a better product at the right price point arrives on the market, just like it always has.
Mercury subsidized
I have a friend who sells LED bulbs for a living. LEDs are still expensive but solar panel businesses are encouraging LEDs because it is more economical to combine LEDs with solar panels than cheaper mercury bulbs with a larger number of solar panels. My friend is irritated that government subsidizes mercury bulbs but not LEDs. Government subsidies, in this case, are subsidizing yesterday's technology to thwart a newer better technology.
