On August 6, 1861 During the Civil War, In order to help pay for the war effort, the United States government issues the first income tax as part of the Revenue Act of 1861 (3% of all incomes over US $800; rescinded in 1872). Taxes Used for WAR!

Bash all you want. Some on this forum think Barr will help us in our long term effort to restore America. The Libertarian candidate being well funded and getting over 5% will be good for Liberty lovers in the end.

According to this article, Just Who Or What Is This "IRS?", the author actually researched the IRS and found this agency IS NOT a part of the US government!!! She can find no history of its beginnings, only the act that was somewhat created!!! Absolutely enlightening reading.
