... "Damn it!" I thought some young punks were fooling around shaking my car back 'n forth while I was as about to take some zzzzzz's....I was under the Monterey Park Library parking lot waiting to open their doors at noon to do some studying....
I felt the wheels were "wiggling" by the tire walls/rims and made lateral sorta rolling motions at first till I heard a loud rumbling sound....and thought this is the "Big One". My heart rate was up there....Sheesh! Then 10 minutes later, 2-3 very mild aftershocks followed..
First person I called while all the commotion was going on was my gf a mile away...with rattled nerves, otherwise she's ok. In all, luckily no reports of damages or injuries reported.
and I've got a a Koi pond. I keep a fountain on top of some rocks and the quake knocked the fountain off the rocks and into the water! My mom lives in Chino Hills and I was able to get her by pphone. She said she was walking past her TV set and got knocked into it. Also, some glassware broke in her kitchen. It was a roller not a jumper - thank God!! Nothing broke at my house.
I'm about 20 miles from the epicenter... in Corona... it rolled then a BANG BANG then it rolled for like another 45 seconds....
That was crazy... phones are still down

Well, now, that was a fun ride. But nowhere near the thrill of the Northridge double quakes, thank heavens. Glad So Cal folks are checking in here to shout out.
I had my hair dryer on and I heard a very loud rumble before it hit. I thought it was a loud plane before everything started rocking and rolling. Did the noise seem strange to you? I just hope it was not preshock for something larger coming. It has been awhile. This one was 5.8 about 8 miles deep they are reporting.
and it was just part of the quake.... believe me... I was thinking something else as well... but I've lived here my whole life and felt tons of quakes (the Northridge quake made a wall unit fall on me in bed!) and the rumble was just the beginning of the quake.
Funny though that there have already been about 30 aftershocks!!!
Also, since THAT quake there has been 4 other independent quakes (all small like 1.8 or 2.3).

Earthquake Lights in Los Angeles 6/28/2008
I found this video of the strange lights we had this morning in LA. Some guy from the USGS posted this video. Supposedly it's some sort of magnetic field discharges from the earth that may be precursors of an earthquake. Similar to the ones in China before the large quake hit.
Here's what the poster said...
"NOW UPDATED AT 2:30PM - The Earthquake Lights NEAR Los Angeles, California this morning (6-28-08) was seen from around 3AM to sunrise. I don't know how accurate this might be but just wanted to post this here to let you guys know.
I felt it strong I'm about 25 miles from Chino Hills my hands are still shaking and neither my home phone or cell is working. It must be due to the earthquake. Thank goodness the Internet is still up!
Well, it was about 25 miles from me, and to put it in perspective, if it was a ride at 6 Flags, most people would be disappointed.
Yes, there was roller-coaster shaking action, and it's unsettling when a solid 1920's steel and concrete overbuilt battleship of a building moves, but we're used to that, here.
I love California San Diego and SF especially....used to spend many winters there in the 90's........
here in Canada I lived for many years in an earthquake zone in BC Vancouver
and its no fear thing.
brings up a thought that has bothered me for days. We need an anonymous "internet pen-pal" kind of system to keep tabs on each other from afar. A neighbor looks after a neighbor, notices the lights have not come on, or the paper has not been picked up. If an entire town went offline, how would we know? We should all have at least one distant friend who watches over our town. If we drop out of sight, they start trying to call local businesses and such to verify we have not been cut off.

interesting roll for me....maybe not for you...but had to calm down my pussycat!

WOW - we just had quite the earth quake! I am in my house and I felt the ground LITERALLY rolling under my feet. With all the noise and movement, it was like my house was made of rubber in pitching and moving. All is well at my house - stuff stayed on shelves
News is reporting 5.8 and if felt like it. Epicenter Chino Hills - I am in Upland about 30 miles away from the epicenter.
I guess it wasn't the "big one" or I'd have known about it!
Why does all the big news happen when I'm not home to hear about it??? Not that that's news I want to hear! Hope everyone's okay down there!!!!!!
