In addition to hotels, motels, lake cabins, campgrounds, and hospitable local RP supporters, there's also plenty of Bed and Breakfasts in the areas surrounding Minneapolis/St. Paul.
I always think of the movie Groundhog Day when I think "Bed and Breakfast."
A bed and breakfast is perfect for a boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife couple.
Most of the ones I found using Google were charging between $100 - $250 / night. I set my budget for under $125 / night. I'm staying at one in Stillwater, MN --- 30-45 min drive from downtown Minneapolis (and I got a discounted rate for traveling by myself - so my rate is under $100 / night).

Stillwater stay
My sister and I are also staying in Stillwater and looking for anyone to share car rental expenses. I haven't reserved a car yet, hoping the price will come down some more. Mid-size car is now $42.95 day - best rate I have found so far. If enough people are staying in Stillwater or enroute to downtown, we could even consider renting a van. . . .

I got an Economy car with Thrifty for $39.99/day...but that's before taxes and fees.
Total for 3 days came out to $192.65.
I can't commit to any ride-shares just yet, because I have no idea how long I might want to stay downtown and party after some of the main events are over.
