I received this after sending them a comment this morning:
Labor Day Reinstated as Paid Holiday at Shelbyville, TN, PlantTyson Foods Requested Change from Union Springdale, Arkansas - August 8, 2008 - Tyson Foods, Inc. announcedtoday it has reached a new agreement with the Retail, Wholesale andDepartment Store Union (RWDSU), an American union, reinstating Labor Dayas one of the designated paid holidays under the contract for coveredemployees in the Shelbyville, Tennessee, plant. Tyson made this request on behalf of its Shelbyville plant employees,some of whom had expressed concern about the new contract provisionsrelative to paid holidays. In an effort to be responsive, Tyson askedthe union to reopen the contract to address the holiday issue, and theunion agreed to do so. The union membership voted overwhelminglyThursday to reinstate Labor Day as one of the plant's paid holidays,while keeping Eid al-Fitr as an additional paid holiday for this yearonly. This means that in 2008 only, Shelbyville employees will havenine paid holidays. For the remainder of the five-year contract period, the eight paidholidays will include: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, MemorialDay, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and aPersonal Holiday, which could either be the employee's birthday, Eidal-Fitr or another day requested and approved by their supervisor. This issue concerns only the plant at Shelbyville, Tennessee. Labor Dayhas always been celebrated, and continues to be, at the other 118 Tysonplants across the country. This story goes back to the late 60's when I worked on a Great Lake freighter. The union that staffed most Great Lake freighters, at the time, did not hire blacks. There was a labor shortage at the time with all the shipping to Vietnam and a hot economy. A union agent in Buffalo was reputed to sponsor Arabs for a price if they would work on lake freighters for a length of time. As the story went, he sponsored hundreds of Arabs. Most freighters had some Arabs working in the firehold or the engine room. Most settled in Dearborn where jobs would occasionally open in the Ford foundry.

The point is that they were hired as temporary workers to keep blacks out. I had to wonder why poor whites and blacks were not available for these jobs in Tennessee and then I remembered this anecdote from fifty years ago and wondered.

anger on this thread not sure I understand it all but the way I see it. I think in the coming years there will be a new flag a new currency and who knows a new language and religion. We won't have to worry about freedom we will be so busy looking for some hole to crawl in to avoid authorities and torture camps Tyson will lease slaves from the authorities in power. I pray for peace and goodwill but that might be to old fashioned these day. I'm likely to be told to go stick it but whatever happens somehow I truly wish we had a way of bonding. Maybe, when we meet in the torture camps we will find something in common. Peace

Companies have so many holidays a year. Some are generous and give you a bunch. Some are stingy and give you hardly any. The holidays they choose to give you run the usual but if they are stingy, they leave some out. If a company has the majority of its employees keeping a certain tradition maybe they elected that during that time is when they want a holiday. And the company is not going to add a holiday, that would be too generous, so they have to remove one. That's their business. It is a free country (oops, it is supposed to be a free country).

Too many special interest groups, ALL want "their own way", ALL "want to rule the Country".

Anyone believes that every group can have "their way" are living in a fantasy land.

Call the holiday/ holidays what they want, I don't care, it's a private company. I'm more concerned with how food handlers (regardless where they are from) have been properly vaccinated and screened for T.B. and all other public threats. Blood borne pathogens are very dangerous. Do all new workers have their shot records scrutinized?

I'm talking about everyone, including employees born in the U.S.

Would you native born Americans (if there ever was such a thing) rather have these war-torn refugees A) stay in their own country and die, B) find peace in America (remember, we ARE the shining city upon the hill, the beacon of freedom and oppurtunity) but not take jobs away from Americans, thus feed off the system, or C) come to America, and be work as functioning citizens?

Choose wisely.

there would be plenty of employment and much less of this divisive infighting for evaporating jobs.

mind you, Mr Cheney's oil & defense companies would be less profitable....

get 8 paid holidays, why not add one rather that take an American Holiday away? I am sure the Somalis have kept the wages down for Tyson! Why the hell are there 800 out of 1300 people working for Tyson Somali, how did that happen? I have been Boycotting Tyson for some time now. Please join me.
