question: what happens to government employees
What happens to government employees, state and federal, when the a country like the U.S. continues to go down the path it's going? I'm looking for big picture answers as well as the minutia, as well as what happens to them over time.

Some time back in the
Some time back in the 1990's, I believe it was 1999 but am not certain, the federal government shut down for a day due to budgetary issues. Maybe some others here will remember the specifics of what happened that day.
Due to what happened back then, I think if the gov runs out of money or even has cashflow problems we might expect some non-essential employees to be given time off without pay until the money issue is corrected.
Government employees lose
Government employees lose their welfare jobs and we get less government. YEA!
"You are a den of vipers. I intend to rout you out and by the Eternal God I will rout you out. If the people only understood the rank injustice of our money and banking system, there would be a revolution before morning." --Andrew Jackson,
1828
YEAH!
And I love your quote. Andrew Jackson: the greatest indian killer and nutcase to ever become president, and give away the government (spoils) to his friends. YEAH!!
Budget cuts
personnel cuts usually start with "non-essential" staff first. Likely you won't see them shutting down prisons or anything; the mail will still run.
That said, you may have to wait a little longer for fire/police to show up in an emergency if there are major cuts. Also, equipment and supplies are replaced/replinished at a much slower pace. Longer lines at courthouses and other gov't offices.
State mental hospitals are usually on the short list....Those folks will be out on the street and in your neighborhoos before long (an excellent opportunity for all of those non-profit, tax-exempt entities to earn their status).
Well you have what happend here in Sacramento
the Governor in an attempt to balance the budget slashed job. 20 thousand out of work across the state I think it was. So yeah they just get dropped like a bad habit.
