Quack Doctor Gives Friend Zoloft?
Folks on here seem to be very knowledgeable when it comes to alternative health and seem to generally doubt the medical establishment so here I go:
My friend moved to a small college town at the end of high school. He ended up falling in the small college town trap and began drinking heavily and using pot and probably several other drugs heavily. He quit most of his other activities like skating and quickly gained weight and became depressed. he didn't have a job while at school and was not doing anything productive. surprise! he became depressed. Without doing a single blood test, the doctor prescribed him zoloft. My freind had every right to be depressed. He was living a loser lifestyle.
That being said now he acts very manic. He has lost all inhibition and does not act like the way he used to. His personality has drastically changed for the worse. He has become unrecognizable to me. When he's on zoloft he's become more aggressive and a downright jerk. Even if the zoloft does fix his depression he will soon be depressed again because none of his freinds want to be around him and his former college roomates kicked him out of the home due to his new erratic behavior. (they didn't mind the pothead part
of him)
Has anyone heard of microlactin treating depression? I haven't been able to find too many studies on the interenet supporting it. I gave it to my folks for their arthritis and they said they experienced that additional benefit of a better mood. Its much better than glucosamine if anyone reads this for treating arthritis.
Please reply with natural solutions if you know of any. I find it unfathomable though that a doctor would give you mental medications without a blood test what about a low thyroid, testosterone??

Sounds like your friend
may be bipolar. This condition is potentially fatal (suicide) and is frequently underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Your friend needs to see a good psychiatrist. My good friend suffers from this and responded well to treatment. This is one condition where the right medication can save lives.

I would suggest that you tell your friend to go back to his
doctor, tell the doctor what is going on, and for him to try another medication. Make sure you try to come across as being a concerned friend,as you are, instead of judging or criticizing him. Many individuals receiving treatment for depression and/or anxiety give up if the medication doesn't work or stick with the same medication even though it is not working. Which drug works best for whom can not be predicted in advance. It takes some trial and error by the doctor.
Your friend's drug abuse is a attempt by him to self medicate. My best guess, from the information you have given, is that he had anxiety issues, which usually begin in late adolescences. By not seeking treatment for the anxiety disorder, depression eventually develops as a person reaches his late teens to early twenties. Anxiety and depression are rooted in a person's biology and/or environment. There is a correlation between mental disorders and subsequent drug abuse.
Your friend is not choosing a "loser" lifestyle. Humans want to lead productive and happy lives, to love and be loved, and your friend is no different. His anxiety, depression, and drug abuse our overwhelming his brain. They change the way he sees things and the way he feels about life.
I would also suggest you do some research(Google) on drug abuse, anxiety, and depression so you can better understand what your friend is going through.
His problems are only going to get worse the longer he puts off getting on different medication.
Drugs have their place
in some treatment. A combination of therapy, school change, exercise and Zoloft literally saved my son's life. They tried other medications on him and they all work differently. You just have to find the one that works for your brain. He took Prozac and it made him suicidal. He took Celexa and it made him homicidal. If a person is not functioning, the right medication can make all the difference.
the healthcare system is depressing
Sadly, this is how the system works. Prescribing the newest drugs to be taken indefinately for an elusive symptom is how they make money.
The best anti depressant is "well butrin" because it has been around the longest, it is cheap, and the fewest side effects. But this is rarely prescribed because big pharma wants you on something more expensive.
I think if your Doctor tells you you are depressed right now you should feel perfectly healthy. Those who can be awake enough to see what is happening in the country and around the world SHOULD be really sad.
whats wrong with you
whats wrong with you americans?
you guys take all these highly potent, synthetic pharmaceutical drugs as soon as your not feeling well.
i feel sorry for your friend but getting depressed is his brain telling him that it's not happy with the lifestyle its in.
it's his responsibility to look after himself and listen to his body.
i bet if he did some regular light exercise and ate three healthy, good
meals a day - he'd be feeling good in no time.
(if he has serious mood swings - or bi-polar - as it's called now - i suggest he cuts out sugar from his diet - that includes white bread & pasta and other refined white foods)
I've asked myself that same question.
Half the people I know are on anti-depressants or ADHD medication. How could that many people have a problem so severe that they need medication?
As a 54 yo American
I basically have been following the guidelines you just said for 30+ years. I seldom ever get sick, have lots of energy, and a rather positive outlook (of course DR. Paul helped).

IMPORTANT
No diagnosis here or anything, but here is a very important bit of information. There is depression, and then there is manic depression or bipolar disease. There are two types of bipolar ... type one (the full blown one) and then type II, in which symptoms are to a lesser degree. This one is seldom recognized by regular medical drs. (or the regular type I for that matter, either.) When a regular antidepressant such as Zoloft is given, it can push a bipolar person into the manic state. A person with bipolar disease should never be given regular antidepressants. And you are right that any good dr. should do a blood test first to check for other things. BUT ... please keep this info in mind, or do research on it ... because you might be one of the few people that can help your friend to find answers.
My nephew takes it.
I am pretty sure that was what it was. I will call him to find out tomorrow and ask him. I am pretty sure he said microlactin. He tried zoloft ( said he was an asshole on that ) he tried prozac ect, but this new thing really works. He is bi-polar. It's funny because these things were never heard of when I was a kid. No one would have said bi-polar, they would have just said jerk:) Your mom would have told you to get over it and life would go on. What happened?
I'm all for alternative
I'm all for alternative medicine but I seriously doubt a depressent that's been proven to raise estrogen levels in men is going to help depression.
This kind of thing takes a
This kind of thing takes a desire to find a cure from your friend. I do suggest you watch this though it may give your friend some hope. There are 7 parts but only 8 minutes long.
