Putin Walks into a Trap
By Mike Whitney
The American-armed and trained Georgian army swarmed into South Ossetia last Thursday, killing an estimated 2,000 civilians, sending 40,000 South Ossetians fleeing over the Russian border, and destroying much of the capital, Tskhinvali. The attack was unprovoked and took place a full 24 hours before even ONE Russian soldier set foot in South Ossetia. Nevertheless, the vast majority of Americans still believe that the Russian army invaded Georgian territory first. The BBC, AP, NPR, the New York Times and the rest of the establishment media has consistently and deliberately misled its readers into believing that the violence in South Ossetia was initiated by the Kremlin. Let's be clear, it wasn't. In truth, there is NO dispute about the facts except among the people who rely on the western press for their information. Despite its steady loss of credibility, the corporate media continues to operate as the propaganda-arm of the Pentagon.

Mr Bodgers
The angst manifested was not over the geopolitical history of the Caucus'.
Those of us not watching the opening ceremonies of the Olympics were mesmerized by the indiscriminate killing of 2000 sleeping Ossetians, and the US media's total disregard for the truth about it, as the US media did not even report the incident until it could be propagandized as "naked Russian aggression" on the "poor citizens of Georgia".
The fact that most Americans could not find the place on a map was used by the media to resurrect 1980's cold war rhetoric, with the blatant misreporting of facts.
Killing is killing, and killing sleeping civilians without provocation, with USA permission and armaments is still considered by some Americans as an awful thing to do, even for 'Paultards".

No Good Guys
The Georgians did instgate this by shelling South Ossetia's capital, an act which I'm sure killed a great many civilians. That being said, the Russians reacted very strongly and were also indiscriminate in who they targeted.
If the vast majority of South Ossetian's want to be part of Russia, then their right to self determination should be respected, but both parties to this conflict are authoritarian states IMO, and I'm not going to root for either side.
The question of who has a "rightful" claim to South Ossetia is complicated, and I'm sure Georgia and Russia can each make a case, but the amount of death and destruction this conflict has already caused doesn't seem worth it to me.
Politicians are talking, soldiers are fighting, and it's the civilians on both sides who are really suffering. My first impulse is to think of Russia as the bad guys, since Georgia is the underdog, but I think that attitude gives the Georgian government too much underserved support.
The question is
do we have a place in this? Should the U.S. get involved? Especially since we do'nt even seem to know or agree on who did what? I have my fears that the administration may in some way have some role in this. The pres. of Georgia seems to have had something going on with Mccain and/or Bush. He even mentioned Mccain. Mccains camp has had some kind of monetary dealings with Georgia for some time.
Niether Georgia or Russia
has a right to claim S. Ossetia...S. Ossetia declared independence from Georgia as the Republic of South Ossetia (not diplomatically recognized by the UN though) in 1992, having it's own flag, President, Prime Minister, etc. Russia is defending S. Ossetia from Georgia.
The politicians are hypocrites saying that Russia should respect Georgia's sovereignty and borders, but yet it was Georgia who didn't respect S. Ossetia's sovereignty or borders. It's the first impulse to think Russia as the bad guys because the MSM is reporting that way.

Lie nr:24654 . 90% of so-called "Osations" have Russain citizenship and passpoorts. Almost all preveous USSR states have large ethnic Russian populeous, so do most of the former Baltic states. This was a controlled migration to further the cementing of the superstate USSR (open borders with mexico ring a bell?). Of course these mex..--aah, sorry i mean Russians(sic) are loyal to "mother Russia" as supposed to their host countries.

On another note, i just love the knee-jurk reaction of the Paultards, taking moral sides in a conflict (wich you all do, you choose the Russians) forgetting the fact that having foreigners and non-citizens claiming part of your age old country as territory and wanting to seceede and JOIN Russia is of course NOT an act of aggression. Note: last sentence is sarcastic for those who dont get it
--
Taking sides on moral grounds needs knowledge, i dont see how Americans, not knowing their own history can have an inform opinion on a nation 6000 miles away. What a joke.

Trilateralism...the world is divided in three. Each of the superpowers keeps small wars going near the other two. They appear to be enemies, who are allies, who are enemies. They need each other, use each other, distrust each other, assist each other. It is all an illusion, to keep the elite in power. The real war is economic, and very few are supposed to rule. .2 of one percent of the world population are the elite rulers, they promote eternal war, mass poverty, pit everyone against each other in a neverending battle to have enough. We the People are the rats in the maze. Don't think of people in terms of nationality, race or religion. Think of people as either elite, pawns of the elite, and those destined for slavery or death, because that is how the elite see it. " Better to die on your feet, then live on your knees."

This article is the truth. I've been following the story. Russia responded to the attack....
Just like 9/11, here we go again with the bs. It is being reported around the world that Georgia started the attack.
btw, Russia has already filed charges in the world court for war crimes against georgian president.
Everyone around me knows the truth, and yes, I had to correct most of them. They went on line to prove me wrong and guess what? They're pissed and now wide awake to the lies of the media. They're blown away.
From what Putin saw I doubt he'll ever back off. There were reports of them burning the alive, etc. Georgia bombed the civilian population, their homes, schools and hospitals. Georgia did not target anything but the people. Russia on the other hand is attacking strategically, and yes, they used OVERWHELMING force...how else do you win? bush could learn a few things about war. Putin is pissed off. I believe he said the imperialism of the united states stops here.
The russian troops, (the peacekeepers) that were already there were the first ones shot dead.

Here's the Georgian president using the words freedom and New World Order together in the same sentence. Ah, the emotional appeals of propaganda.
freedom = NWO
interesting, huh?
I have seen footage of Georgian protesters
I have seen footage of Georgian protesters with signs saying "Divided we fail!" - is that the pro-NWO "slogan?"
perhaps
but he got 20 000 nuclear warheads to back him up...

"Nonsense. Neither Putin nor
"Nonsense. Neither Putin nor newly-elected president Dmitry Medvedev have any such intention. It is absurd to think that Russia, having extracted itself from two pointless wars in Chechnya and Afghanistan, and after years of grinding poverty and social unrest following the fall of the Soviet state, would choose to wage an energy war with the nuclear-armed US military. That would be complete madness."
It is absurd to think that the United States, embroiled in two pointless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, in the throes of economic collapse resulting from absuive fiat money policies, would wage an energy war with Iran. That would be complete madness.
ALL the powers that be are insane. It's unlikely that either side is so clever or powerful as to orchestrate this sort of crap. International politics is not like a game of chess, it's like a bunch of idiots stuck in a mudpool covered in animal dung, slinging it all over each other and making a big mess.
"The attack was unprovoked and took place a full 24 hours before even ONE Russian soldier set foot in South Ossetia"
Bullshit. Russia has operated international-organization mandated peacekeeping forces in South Ossetia since 1992. Not exactly a "high-level troop deployment", but they were there. "http://www.osce.org/georgia/13203.html" The very fact that the author ignores this fact makes his intentions suspect.
suspect
I'm basically on Russia's side of this, so I'm biased. However, isn't it odd how quickly the Russians responded with such an enormous force? It usually takes more than 24 hours to mobilize a large scale movement of troops and armored vehicles.
Clearly, there is propaganda and manipulation on all sides of this competition for resources and prestige.
apparently the word out on
apparently the word out on the street is that anyone who even knew that this part of the world existed could see the rising tensions, being intimately involved im sure that russia had at the very least dedicated contingency forces available to respond to any incidences in the region. its not like this situation just fell out of the sky. it only appears that way to us westerners because before last thursday, 99% of americans thought that russia attacked the state located due north of florida.
They were smart enough to know this situation was coming...
...and they prepared for it so they could respond quickly and decisively. Nevertheless, your final point can't help but be true. Such is the way of the world (unfortunately)...

Russia had no choice but counterattack in S.Ossetia - Gorbachev
MOSCOW - Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said Russia had no choice but to launch a counterattack to Georgia’s offensive in breakaway South Ossetia, but it is still possible to find a political solution to the crisis.
“What happened on the night of August 7 is beyond comprehension,” Gorbachev said in an article The Guardian published on Wednesday. “The Georgian military attacked the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali with multiple rocket launchers designed to devastate large areas.”
“Russia had to respond. To accuse it of aggression against ’small, defenseless Georgia’ is not just hypocritical but shows a lack of humanity,” he said in the article.
“Nevertheless, it was still possible to find a political solution. Clearly, the only way to solve the South Ossetian problem on that basis is through peaceful means. The Georgian leadership flouted this key principle,” Gorbachev, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, said.
Gorbachev told the paper that the Georgian authorities could only undertake the offensive “with the perceived support” of a much more powerful force - an apparent reference to the United States, which has trained Georgian troops and backed the country’s bid to join NATO.
Now that the military assault has been routed, Gorbachev said, “the Georgian government and its supporters should rethink their position.”
Gorbachev said some Western nations’ positions prevented the UN Security Council from acting effectively at the start of the conflict. He also said that by declaring the Caucasus region that is thousands of miles from the American continent a sphere of its “national interest,” the U.S. made a serious blunder.

sent this article to glenn beck
i wish my lover wouldn't watch glenn, but since he does and i saw what glenn was touting for the past two days, i figured someone had to help him out!!
~peace
yeah, right
What would he do? I was just watching him interview the Georgian president, who said something to the effect that the invasion is disrupting world peace, and will "damage the progress of the New World Order." He said those words, "the New World Order," as clear as day. Did anyone else catch that?
I DVR Glen Beck and was watching this AM
I had to rewind it several times. I caught it - perfectly clear.

NO Trap, All Planned.
Freedom is not FREE!!
Read the article...
Like it concludes, "South Ossetia was a trap and Putin took the bait. Unfortunately for Bush, the wily Russian prime minister is considerably brighter than anyone in the current administration. Bush's plan will undoubtedly backfire and disrupt the geopolitical balance of power. The world might get that breather from the US after all."
No
More likely Bush made a deal with his pal Putin that he would trade them Georgia for Iran.
Establish motive. I totally
Establish motive. I totally don't see what kid of trade could be made. Nor, do I see why.
However, Georgia stands between Russia and the potential for a Russian pipeline. Georgia has also always been part of the USSR in the past. So again, what's the trade?

Could be wrong but ,
Freedom is not FREE!!
That was my thoughts. There was a thread I read somewhere (not this site) that once said Putin could be all that stops the end of everything. Who could complain or praise that our government is the greatest. I personnaly think it is all a scam!
How about you folks who live
outside the US? How are your news sources reporting this?
A lot of coverage here...
then go to "Home" and "more stories" many from the beginning to present.

Hannah2 - what's going on with your banks
I read an article that you guys were having mass fall out from buying bundles of us mortgages and having to sell them for pennies on the dollar? Also one that said merrill lynch was dumping them for pennies on the dollar and providing for the financing of anyone stupid enough to buy them. Any info? Article referenced below"
"July 25 was a particularly bad day for Australia’s four biggest banking stocks. In a matter of hours, $16.2 billion in stockholder value was erased from existence—the worst fall since Black Monday in October 1987. "
