David Monson began pushing the idea of growing industrial hemp in the United States a decade ago. Now his goal may be within reach — but first he needs to be fingerprinted.
Monson plans this week to apply to become the nation's first licensed industrial hemp farmer. He will have to provide two sets of fingerprints and proof that he's not a criminal.
The farmer, school superintendent and state legislator would like to start by growing 10 acres of the crop, and he spent part of his weekend staking out the field he wants to use.
''I'm starting to see that we maybe have a chance,'' Monson said. ''For a while, it was getting really depressing.''
Last month, the state Agriculture Department finished its work on rules farmers may use to grow industrial hemp, a cousin of marijuana that does not have the drug's hallucinogenic properties. The sturdy, fibrous plant is used to make an assortment of products, ranging from paper, rope and lotions to car panels, carpet backing and animal bedding.

HERES A BIT MORE....WITH INFO ON SOME OTHER STATES..
North Dakota is one of seven states that have authorized industrial hemp farming. The others are Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana and West Virginia West Virginia, E central state of the United States. It is bordered by Pennsylvania and Maryland (N), Virginia (E and S), and Kentucky and, across the Ohio R., Ohio (W). Facts and Figures
Area, 24,181 sq mi (62,629 sq km). Pop. , according to Vote Hemp, an industrial hemp advocacy organization based in Bedford, Mass.
California lawmakers approved legislation last year that set out rules for industrial hemp production, but Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed it. The law asserted that the federal government lacked authority to regulate industrial hemp as a drug.
In 2005, U.S. Representative Ron Paul of Texas introduced legislation to exclude industrial hemp from the definition of marijuana in federal drug laws. It never came to a vote.
Monson farms near Osnabrock in North Dakota's northeastern corner. Industrial hemp thrives in southern Manitoba, just north of Monson's 710-acre farm, where he normally raises wheat, barley and canola.
He is the assistant Republican majority leader in the North Dakota House and is the school superintendent in Edinburg, which has about 140 students in grades kindergarten through 12.
In 1997, during his second session in the Legislature, Monson successfully pushed a bill to require North Dakota State University North Dakota State University, at Fargo; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered and opened 1890 as North Dakota Agricultural College, achieved university status in 1960.

Canada made it legal for farmers there to grow the crop in March 1998.
interesting.
their is so many uses for it other than smoking it.
Hemp could be the answer to so many
of our problems in this country. Grow it, use it for fuel, U.S. based industry (putting our own workers back into production), less need to use wood/trees, the list is almost endless.
^5 Mr. Monson! I wish you well on this journey!!!
Next thing you know
you will have to have a criminal back ground check, DNA, and figerprints to grow wheat and corn.
I wanted to bump this again.

Really???
"a cousin of marijuana that does not have the drug's hallucinogenic properties. "
Hallucinogenic?? Really? Damn, that's some good shit! Never heard of anybody hallucinating on pot.
Don't mean to belittle the post, though. That'd be awesome to get the hemp ball rolling. Thanks for posting that.

I would venture to say that the applications for Hemp,
could be almost limitless. With our current technology, many more applications could be developed. The best one though, might be that hemp can be used to make paper, instead of trees. Talk about renewable resources. Also, I think you can make fuel for cars out of hemp.

2000 gallons of methanol.
Per 3 acres of hemp.. It's denser than wood! And when mixed with resin it's structurally stronger than steel but extremely lighter.
Denmark was plagued by a serious food shortage
"The value of whole, unrefined foods .was dramatically demonstrated on a grand scale during the First World War. Denmark was plagued by a serious food shortage. The government assigned Dr. M. Hindhede, the director of the Danish Institute of Nutrition Research, to design a program for protecting the nation from the hunger threat.
The first action of Hindhede was to increase whole- grain production by limiting livestock production and curtailing the sale of meat, thus saving grain for human consumption. Production of alcoholic beverages was banned for the same reason. Also, grain processing was stopped and only whole-grain bread and cereals were allowed to be sold. Farmers were directed and encouraged to produce more grain, green vegetables, fruits, milk and butter, instead of meat."
"These simple, but from a nutritional standpoint revolutionary , changes in eating habits resulted in spectacular and rapid changes in the health condition of the whole nation. The death rate dropped over 40% in one year. Diseases that affected other European countries, including the dreaded influenza epidemic, bypassed Denmark. In only a few years, Denmark became the healthiest nation in all of Europe! " (p. 46)

The Australian state of New South Wales has joined Canada, China, and various European countries in allowing the cultivation of industrial hemp. Tough luck, American farmers.

Where do I send in the order for a "telephone pole size of hemp" to get high on as Dr. Paul said it would take one that large?

Update:
Isn't this what was used to make "rope" out of during WWII? Hence the joke: go 'n smoke some rope. I guess so.
This is also why it has been 'found growing wild' for years upon years in many parts of the Country, but isn't that stuff that grows wild the same smokin' stuff to get high on. I'm bewildered a bit, yes of course, I'll get over it.

I thought our Federal government wanted EVERYONE to grow hemp:
http://www.youtube.com/wa...
I mean, they made a move asking (trying to convince) farmers to grow it.
What changed their mind about growing hemp? Uh it wouldn't be a 80% loss of business to DuPont would it? It wouldn't be because *processing* hemp is more ENERGY efficient than *processing* oil would it?
Nah, couldn't be that:

I Think Part of The Problem
is actually the lobbyists for pesticide and cotton industries.
The cotton industry should jump on this considering the environmental and water conservancy benefits. Besides, industrial hemp can yield more harvest per acre.
However, with industrial hemp requiring minimal chemical treatment (pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, etc..), this would reduce profits for our buddies at
monsanto
The only reason they would be interested in industrial hemp for the U.S. is if they thought they could patent the seed.

LIAR... Hemp is NOT a cousin of Marijuana..
Hemp is Marijuana.
Is a Gala Apple Any Less an Apple than a Washington Apple?
NO..;
Name of Hemp Plant.. Cannabis Sativa
Name of Marijuana Plant .. Cannabis Sativa
Same Plant...
This is DIS INFORMATION.. Hemp is Cannabis, just low THC Marijuana.
I guess one could be an Alchemist and turn cannabis into hemp by giving it poor nutrition and mating the female plant with a male to lesson the bud production and make seeds.
But it is still a Marijuana Plant.
You are a fool

he's right

kinda annoying.
Incorrect
They are not the same thing. Is a Homo Sapien the same as Homo Erectus, no.
Incorrect again...
Is a short white person the same species as a tall hispanic person, yes, they are simply different ethnicities, (strains) and are superficially different in appearance(ie. they have differant phenomes). If two individuals can interbreed and consistantly produce fertile, viable offspring, then they are the same species. both "Hemp" and "Weed" are Cannabis. they have simply been breed for different traits. they can easily(in fact accidentally) be breed together to produce medium THC strains. though why you would want to is beyond me.
really..
who wants a medium strain..
Garden Poppies vs. Opium Poppies?
Yes, they are both poppies but I can legally grow the garden variety.
Field corn vs. sweet corn both are corn but I wouldn't want to eat the field corn and it is a different plant than sweet corn.
Cannabis also has different varieties: Industrial hemp is NOT the same plant ..industrial hemp gets 2-4 meters in height and has a low THC
Cannibis variety "marijuana" ( which a slang term originating in Mexico) is more of a bushy plant and has a higher THC.

Good for him! Too bad he
Good for him!
Too bad he has to be treated like a convicted pedophile to do it. It's all about protecting their energy monopoly there is no valid reason to regulate or suppress industrial hemp since there is virtually no THC content. (not that THC is valid reason either)
And the myth that someone might hide a marijuana field inside a hemp field is also ridiculous as they would cross pollinate rendering the marijuana worthless.

I'm going to look it up later, but if anyone has a link to the actual "rules" that they came up with, I'd sure like to see them. I have some acreage that would sure look good growing hemp....and perhaps a few...wink wink...weeds in the middle...LOL ... For all the narcs...I was kidding... wink wink
Think he'll have any trouble finding workers???
For harvest season?? Hahahaha!
Think how difficult it will be to maintain the farm...to harvest the crop.
