Breaking news!!!!
25 year old flight plan systems that do not provide ID tickets back for filing flight plans, but bounce back errors, do not always work right. When a completely moronic system that people have been crying wolf over for decades now breaks down, I'm sure it's because of some conspiracy, and not because of the flawed design and complete retardation of the whole thing.
Seriously. The "air system" (wtf is that?) is not shutting down. The FAA is landing planes the same way they always do. The planes *cannot take off* because there are, in many cases, no flight plans filed. They are filing them "by hand" which is to say controllers are checking each plan through. That is why there are delays. Nothing's going to fall out of the sky due to not having a flight plan, but without having the flight plans for the planes taking off, things would be an even worse mess than they normally are.
In short order, the media will say there was zero danger and things were blown out of proportion, while the unions say that the whole thing was going to collapse and we need gazillions to replace everything. What's needed, as with most Gov agencies, is a little common sense and about three months' worth of work to fix the means by which flight plans are filed. What's going to be wonderful is when all the automatic flight plans start bouncing back as erroneous. Probably won't make the news, though, since Hillary is speaking.
Air traffic control has been technological backwater for.
decades.
The controllers are also fed up at working 12 and 14 hour days and being called up on their days off due to lack of staff. This is a huge problem at the moment. They are even putting ads in the Australian papers looking for controllers. Honestly, I'd look at the union for this "computer glitch". The controllers are pissed.

solar flares perhaps.
anybody check out the solar flare activity? we are in the beginning stages of a major solar storm.
other common problems would be gps messed up, cell phones not working, power outages, atms not working, etc...
No Current Activity
I just checked, and it appears that the sun is remaining very quiet: http://www.dxlc.com/solar/. I know that the next cycle is supposed to start at any time, but the sun has remained strangely inactive for quite a while now. What makes you say that we are in the beginning stages of a major solar storm? It is not that I doubt it, but I am curious as to the source of your evidence.
something is fishy

the only planes I saw today
... were making these X formations in the sky that just lingered for hours.
Conspiracies aside, I do live near LVI. Hadn't taken any notice to a lack of traffic, but, will have to keep my eyes on the skies to see if anything's out of the ordinary.

for what it's worth
I was out and about and stopped to grab chow at a restaurant near LVI in Allentown, PA. Grabbed a booth by the window that had a direct view of the airport. Absolutely no traffic seen in or out for at least an hour. Of course, it is Tuesday, so I have no idea what the regular traffic would be like. After burgers, the wife and I took a spin around the airport complex. The only activity was a private twin engine doing touch and go's. This was just after dusk. Minimal traffic was visible at much higher altitudes.
Back home at 9:05pm. LVI website lists all arrivals as "on time."

Don't know if this documentation is worth anything, but, figured I'd get it recorded for future generations to share with their grandchildren.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) --
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Every major airport in the United States was experiencing flight delays Tuesday afternoon because of a communications breakdown at a Federal Aviation Administration facility, the administration said.
Flights at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport were delayed Tuesday afternoon.
The facility south of Atlanta is having problems processing data, requiring that all flight-plan information be processed through a facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. The two facilities process all flight plans for commercial and general aviation flights in the United States, said FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.
The administration said there are no radar outages and said they have not lost contact with any planes.
The problem appeared similar to a June 8, 2007, computer glitch that caused severe flight delays and some cancellations along the East Coast.
Don't Miss
• FAA: Real-time flight delays
On the FAA's Web site, delays were being reported at all 40 airports located on the administration's flight information map.
The Web site, which normally lists the length of expected flight delays, was no longer listing that information Tuesday afternoon.

Things look pretty normal
Phoenix area air traffic looks ok so far. Here is a map of affected areas, looks like mostly around Atlanta.

Don't know how much the problems will spread as the day wears on, but seems like things are under control.
They ought to start flying sorties over the Capital...
...especially the U.S. Military Command Center (Pentagon).
How's the saying go... "fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again. " Who was the mental giant who said that anyway?

plane just flew over my house.....
Computer malfunction in Atlanta.
The system that routes the planes is frozen up. Cannot track flights. Saying the whole system is old and needs a massive overhaul for years. Sounds like more of our tax dollars about to get sucked away. Out bound flights not getting off as fast as they are coming in. Causing back up.
Need more innformation
The FAA uses old computers for a reason. Last time I heard they were using compaq NSK's they are old clunky computers that have a very high availability. Many times has the government looked at replacing the ageing systems, thing is the old stuff is more reliable than allot of the systems we have working now. Banks also use allot of old systems, mainframes and NSK's, old and reliable still is better than new and rebooting.
I am not an expert here, I know this because I did a job where we were sold a few NSK's and they sighted the FAA and banks asd customers. One thing is true we will question everything that they say.
Hmmm thats what I heard
but I am wondering if that is truly what it is or something else
I also agree with you
I would not believe a word they said unless it could be proven.
Are you suggesting that the media may be covering up?
This is America! Our media always speaks truth, unlike (fill in the blank) media. How dare you suggest that the media might feed disinformation to the citizens! After all, our media has done nothing but provide indepth and fair analysis of 9/11 and Dr. Paul's Presidential campaign.
Just took a peek outside no planes in the air
Usually I can easily see planes flying around - anyone else?
