New Dallas Ordinance: Convenience Store Tyranny
In an effort to make the people of Dallas feel safer, the Dallas City Council has passed an ordinance requiring all Convenience Store Owners to install high resolution cameras, register with the city, and sign an affidavit that "gives police the authority to act as the owner" in filing a criminal trespass complaint.
Honestly, how many of us attend our city council meetings? If we're not there, how can we stand up against this kind of tyranny?

I think it's profiling in disguise
Many smoke shops and small convenience stores are run by people of foreign origin. I'm betting that's why the city is forcing this ordinanace through, so they can march right in anytime, to take their tapes and see if they can learn more about their customers and the owners themselves.

Typical todays AMERICAN thinking. PUT SECURITY ahead of FREEDOM.
For you're own good ,OF COURSE. DESERVE NEITHER, B.F.

Run for office.
It does little good to roll back the power of the federal government, if the state and local governments just expand to fill the power vacuum. We need Ron Paul Republicans to act as our immune system, and fight any power-grab, even if it seems small and insignificant.

It's strange in how I feel
It's strange in how I feel about this.
It doesn't bother me at all when I go to stores that have video cameras. Even if they have them outside around the store and inside as well. Some stores even go so far as to have a television facing the entrance so that you know you are on video - I suppose to prove that the camera isn't fake. None of that bothers me at all.
BUT, the idea that it is the government controlling those cameras does bother me. Even more than that, it would really bother me that every store in town has cameras that are mandated and controlled by the government. I wouldn't want to shop in that town and probably would no longer want to live there, either.
Dallas
Years ago, 10 years maybe, in Dallas\Fort Worth area, you had to "show an I.D.", "sign some paper" to "receive some sort of club card", so you could drink in a bar, and they were not called bars by the way. Driver's license number 'n Social Security number required on the signed paper if I remember correctly.
They still doin' that crap?
I remember that
it was called the "unicard", but not sure if they still do that. I think Dallas is split between like three or five counties and some were "dry" and some were "wet". At Grandpappy Point on Texoma we had to use our Unicard too. I was a waiter at the Bennigans in the Galleria Mall, and constantly having to get those things was a huge pain in the butt.
All Your Convenience Stores Are Belong To Us
What is up with Dallas??? Seriously!?!
Further question: what are the consequences if store owners refuse to abide by the city ordinance?
If convenience stores are held to this ordinance, you can bet all other businesses will soon be held to it as well. Sounds like something the Denver Chamber of Commerce might be interested in, as such tactics WILL drive businesses out of the town.
Some of us should make real
Some of us should make real effort to go to every one. I think I am going to make that committment here, instead of going only when I want something. A few months ago they banned coinvenience stores from selling "novelty" lighters. I thought that was terribly intrusive, but not a battle I felt like picking. If I had been there, however, I would have entered the discussion and there would have been one more vote or voice against it. We must get off our butts, and I say that to my self as well.
be there
Yes, please get involved. Be there and speak up - calmly, rationally, and stick to the topic.
The reason they want you to
The reason they want you to sign an affidavit to give police authority is because police do not have authority to do so without your permission. It’s just like drugs just say no! The city council has no authority to decree any such things tell them to take a hike.

Crazy
I wonder how many jobs will be lost and how many mom & pops will shut down. This is how monopolies happen: only a chain store can deal with this stuff.
