ACLU: DNC Protesters Arrested, Shackled, Denied Attorneys, Forced To Plead Guilty
Denver police used pre-printed forms to issue charges, misled arrestees

The ACLU has accused the Denver Police Department of violating the constitutional rights of protesters arrested in the vicinity of the Democratic National Convention by denying them access to lawyers, forcing them to plead guilty to inappropriate charges and placing some of them in leg shackles.
The charges are detailed in a letter (Click here for PDF: http://tinyurl.com/5mwxg3) which at time of writing is yet to appear on the website of ACLU Colorado but has been obtained by alternative news website Raw Story.
The letter summarizes how basic facts of law and criminal justice were either ignored or turned on their head by the police in the absence of legal counsel for arrestees, itself a violation of the Constitution.
The ACLU alleges that police effectively forced some protesters into pleading guilty, by tricking them into believing they had to do so in order to post bond and gain access to a phone call.
In addition it is thought that some arrestees were led to believe that only they could post bond, rather than having a third party do it on their behalf.
“This meant that no one was allowed to make a phone call unless they plead guilty, thus making it impossible for arrestees to even call a lawyer until admitting guilt.” Raw Story writer John Byrne comments.
Furthermore, the letter charges that some of those in custody were told that pleading not guilty would result in a “double sentence” if convicted.

Just a question for anyone to answer:
What would it take for the ACLU to become a 'force to be reckoned with'?
By that I mean an arm of the judicial government on the same enforcement level as the police (Federal, State and local),the FBI, ATF, DEA, and the rest of the alphabet soup of goons?
They have a valid cause to defend no different than law itself. Oh, excuse me, CIVIL LIBERTIES ARE the LAW !

Yeah, I'm not sure about the ACLU. I signed on to bump the impeachment petition but, just the other day I got a letter from them asking me to sign a letter to congress that would force health providers to perform abortions even if they have a moral objection. Doesn't sound like Constitution to me. See you in Minneapolis.

ACLU got me out of a ridiculous 6 month jail sentence for vagrancy once. They do defend rights, but I tell you, the PEOPLE need to help with this. NO ONE should want Constitutional Rights denied by their own local authorities. We can not let the camel stick his nose into the tent. You know what happens then. People in Denver need to unite--NOT because they agree with the protestors, but because they disagree with taking rights away!

I found it discouraging
I found it discouraging because abortion is such a divisive issue (one not meant to be "solved" but to continue the fiction that Republicans and Democrats are different parties) and because it seems that as the US is standing on the precipice of fascist/socialist domination, ending the Patriot Act, Real ID, DNA database, Military Commissions Act, etc. demands one hundred percent of our attention.
Abortion will not be much of an issue in the coming American Gulag.

To me the boat will still sink. However, I suppose you're right. Restore liberty and the rest will automatically fall into place.

actually I still am unable to get past defending NAMBLA....other pedophile cases....but I have been able to at least come to the conclusion that the ACLU also defends "good" (imo) causes...
