Can anyone tell me the reason for these conventions?

what happened to the reason for this convention ? I see an anointed choice and that's it ? why even have the convention when it's just one person already chosen ? does any of this make sense ?
wasn't the point to have "other" choices at the conventions to make a decision ? why even bother ?
I'm watching this and I'm thinking this is more like a brain washing rock concert !

It's just a week-long show. It's called "mileu control" and it makes people respond to a speech screaming for them to "wake-up" with starry-eyes and even more faith in the "chosen". It is sadder than sad, but they have it and they own it. We eat it up. They make money.
