Low altitude military flights

I'm about 50 miles north of Springfield, MO. recently there has been low level military flights from around 500-1000 AGL (above ground level) where there is usually no military traffic, just an occasional military helicopter going to or from the maintenance shop. I had one cargo plane (c-130) that I though was crashing when it flew maybe 200 feet AGL close to my home. Several times warthog jets (tank killers) flew less than 1000 AGL in the area. numerous times military helicopters have been flying around the area. I know there is a helicopter maintenance shop in Springfield MO. but they appear not to be flying to or from the facility, and flying too low for a normal flight path. Has anyone else notice an increase of military flight, especially low altitude, flights in their area? Any one have knowledge or guess to why?

All the time.. It is normal.

They are hunting Osama.
They have a tip he moved to Missouri.

Really
There is a base nearby and bases all over the U.S.
I think it is cool to see the planes and helicopters.
They have to fly somewhere.

I always give flash them the love sign and shout Ron Paul.

I figure my only hope if their is some nefarious scheme is to develop the "golden helmet" that Don Quioxte sought that rendered the knight invincible.

A couple times we've seen

A couple times we've seen brand new dark colored 4-door sedans with no license plates at all being driven by paramilitary types in full body armor. If they are light on the logs, they can't deploy. This is one possibility since the rotations are going on now.

Windshield Repair

yes, yes i have

helicopters often fly over my home, but a few days ago there was something so loud i ran out to see and it was a rather large plane flying very low. it looked suspiscious to me and i believe it was simlar to the one near you. our airspace is regularly traveled, but this was right above the roof!

good morning Meekandmild

I guess you missed the SIX C-130's flying straight line about two minutes apart, WELL below radar ( I thought my house was targeted for a few minutes ) They came over this past Mon. Also 3 weeks ago? ( when ron paul was addressing congress about bail-out) I had a brand new extended cab ( century tel ) truck ( white ) that stoped down the road just past my barn, out of view from the house. It had four dish's on it and lots of antena. I wrote a letter informing my son what was going on and instucting him to " take a walk" through the woods. The truck had sat there for almost an hour with no-one getting out or doing anything. Son told me 3 of four dish's were pointed at house and two men wearing head phones? Truck now there for a little over an hour. I stepped out the door and said in regular voice, " I know your listening, you S.O.B.'s and I'm not going to give you any ammo to use against us". They immidiately left. You and I both know century tel doesn't have any new trucks in this county, and my son didn't recognise either of the men (we know all three repair men) so who were they? I have also (almost daily) had a choper staying around the farm for about two hours a day.

Bizarre!

It's very weird out there right now. My business partner and I get a lot of windshield time with our work, mostly in New Mexico, and I can't tell you how many new unmarked SUVs with US Govt plates we've seen on the road in the last 6 months, nearly all of them being driven by young guys wearing RayBans and cop mustaches. A couple times we've seen brand new dark colored 4-door sedans with no license plates at all being driven by paramilitary types in full body armor. WTF?

My cousin and I

were out on our property catching some fish when a warthog flew over...it's been a long time since I have seen one of those in person, and never before in podunkville Oklahoma.

Same in Ohio!

I was staying in Ohio recently from March to about July and when there I experienced the EXACT same thing you talked about. Really low military helicopters with no discernable military markings. We are talking like flying so low I feel confident in saying if I had a slingshot I could probably hit them with a rock, the reverberations of the blades was so loud it shook my grandparents house! Also on the Fourth of July a big military jet cargo plane flew so low the best I can describe how low is, like you, I thought it was going to crash. My friends and family have lived in that area for over 30 years and have never experienced such things before. No doubt any answer you may get from local authorities are BS!! Aren't there laws forbidding military flights below certain altitudes for safety reasons? Also when I got back to California, same thing. Military choppers up the yin yang. Something is going on here, folks. This is not cool.

BRAC.

(note: home to warthogs, C130s are pretty common across the board)

Flight patterns are probably changing for two reasons:

1) BRAC changes
2) fuel conservation

Likely..

a lot of troops are headed to LA to help in the Hurricane relief.

Here's something

I put this thread up a few days ago. I guess people didn't think it was that interesting. I think it is a major indication of things to come. Urban warfare training in Portland Oregon! Check it out.

Not Sure, but I have a guess.

There's a training schedule for all branches of service. In the case of the military, pilots have to log so much flight time in order to stay qualified. If they are light on the logs, they can't deploy. This is one possibility since the rotations are going on now.

Don't get too worked up just yet, unless you start seeing them rolling through main street with bullhorns.

I live up in the mountains, and at the same time every year, I hear a lot of jets out of Fairchild up here. There's an Air Force survival school in this area, and the pilots fly out here to train in the canyons and valleys, and log their flight hours. Last week I had several jets out here cruising around.

It makes me wonder who's flying the aircraft

If our military is short handed and most are deployed in the middle east. Have we got UN personnel operating in the US and getting familiar with US equipment?

Do they fly outside usual training routes?

I'm not in a training route, no new bases that would be where I'm at in flight path between bases.

It's Possible

I wasn't in the Air Force, so I would have to check with a couple of former fly-boys and see what's up.

I do know that the MAWs (Marine Air Wings) used to get re-routed on occasion to another location close by if there was another group using the flight paths. It's not uncommon to use each others' routes for exercises.
Could have gotten re-directed for some reason, maybe weather, maybe other aircraft in the area, pilot had to pull over to pee (kidding), etc.
I've also heard that they sometimes fly over urban areas to test radar and sensor equipment, but again I wasn't Air Force so I can't be sure.

It's kind of hard to speculate why they were there. Overall I don't think I'd worry about it too much unless they start dropping JDAMs or strafing the parking lots.

A possibility

Growing up in North Georgia, we used to get "buzzed" by C130s all the time. Probably once a week, we'd have one come over low and fast. Like you, just a few hundred feet off the deck. We used to call it "Big Bertha".. as in "Oh, there's Big Bertha again."

My Dad made some phone calls and the response was that our house in a rural area happened to be in one of the flight paths for when they practice flying "under" radar. That's one possible explanation.

and this...

last week there was a fighter jet flying low over my insignificant, no where near any military base town. two days later i see a bomber jet. then yesterday, police helicopters. WTF???

i'm going to buy water and food today.

I went out on the boat Wednesday to a place I had gone...

before probably 2 or 3 hundred times. And I saw what looked like a C130 flying low and slow. I have never seen C130's flying there before.
About an hour later, I spotted a second one.

Chinook Helicopters

Saw 5 Chinook Helicopters a few weeks ago, were not very high up, in a staggered formation. These were grey, with no markings... (North Texas)

Who Governs the Governless?

Yeah

There has been really loud military choppers flying low lately at night.

It's really annoying and you can really tell the difference of a beefy military chopper when you hear it. Those blades don't hum, they whistle really loud.

I've never seen anything like it in the last 10 years.
