VP selections by the "powers that be", have become almost traditional in this country - for two reasons. The number 2 guy can serve as an insider to keep a watch on day-to-day activities AND - be there ready to step in, in case something "tragic" happens to the Prez.
It's very possible that McCain picking Palin was more of a "life insurance policy" move by McCain than anything else.
Surely he knows the history and how the game is played. It's certainly plausible he refused to go along with the script of his own demise.

but he's been on the inside long enough to know how the game is played and to recognize a trap when he sees one!
Either way he's screwed
Once the buzz dies down, there will be a backlash from Hillary supporters. They will be mad that McCain is exploiting the woman vote.
