GOP suspends convention sessions due to Gustav
Submitted by truud2 on Sun, 08/31/2008 - 18:25
ST. PAUL — John McCain and Republican party officials agreed to suspend their national convention Monday out of concern for the strong hurricane headed toward New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, ordering a scaled-back opening session and leaving in doubt how the rest of the nominating meetings and political theater will be conducted.
McCain said the more than 4,000 delegates gathering here to give him the party's presidential nomination would meet for a two-and-half-hour session Monday, beginning at 4 p.m. ET. They are to conduct only essential business, putting aside political speechmaking and leaving uncertain the following three days of the convention.

"Anything beyond tomorrow is mere speculation," he said of the convention program.
Canceling the convention was unlikely, as the party must make several formal steps (!?) to nominate McCain and Palin as their candidates and get their names on the November ballot. They must also ratify the party platform.
"These essential tasks of a convention have to be performed," said Jim Bopp, a Republican National Committee member from Terre Haute, Ind., said. "We have to take care of business."
A formal coup?
Now what?

I herad that was
to be at 3:00 and to carry on for two and half hours suspending at 5:30
This is from a Fox News report
Davis said the only critical activities of the convention are its constitution through the gaveling in of the opening session, certification of the Republican National Committee delegates and the nomination of both McCain for president and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as vice president. The first two can occur on the Monday afternoon session. The nominations had been scheduled for Wednesday.
In order to hold the convention, a quorum — or 50 percent plus one of the delegates — needs to be present. Davis said the quorum will be called at 3 p.m. ET Monday and the opening session will last a couple hours.
Davis said he encouraged the speakers to attend and deliver their speeches, but he did not want to speculate on whether McCain would attend. He called speculation the Arizona senator might not attend to accept his nomination as “completely immature” and “outside the scope of what I can tell you with any specificity.”
“If conditions allow, we’d love to have him here, and that would be our preference, but again we’re not making any commitments past 5:30 tomorrow afternoon,” Davis said.
This is going to get interesting......
I'm curious to see what these slime balls have in mind after the hurricane...
"Observe the masses, and do the opposite."
"Observe the masses, and do the opposite."
They're scared
of any controversy whatsoever. They're weak and pathetic and they've lost.
Way to go fellow patriots.

Gustav means "God's Staff"
Gustav means "God's Staff" meaning the instrument by which God herds His flock. I keep seeing posts about how the GOP is using this to their advantage...how will WE the people use Gustav to our advantage?

The canceling of the GOP
The canceling of the GOP convention is a desperate move , they try to hide the fact that they have NO SUPPORT and avoid an open revolt !
They hide from the public, they are affraid, the Revolution closed the Nevada convention and now the GOP convention !
Opportunity
RNC delegates will now have more time on their hands to get out of their hotels and meet us. Will we politely encourage them to observe the Constitution?
Yes we will!
Nice post olafub!

They just simply changed the theme , still happening:

Scott Cottington, who was arranging lobbyist parties for GOP Convention Strategies, said his events were moving ahead as scheduled.
"Nobody's asked us not to do anything," Cottington said. "Nobody has asked us to change anything yet. Now, some of our events feature people from states who may not be around much longer. And I have no idea who's going to be around later in the week."
Still going ahead unchanged was a Monday concert sponsored by the Service Employees International Union designed to counter the Republican message. That four-hour "Take Back Labor Day" show includes singer-songwriter Steve Earle, English folk musician Billy Bragg, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, hip hop artist Mos Def, and Earle's wife Allison Moorer.
Other parties were proceeding but with a different angle.
Originally billed as the Spirits of Minneapolis, that Monday party instead was being changed to the Spirits of the Gulf Coast. It was going to double as a fundraiser for the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund.
Similarly, a Monday event targeting women originally called "Political Chicks a Go Go" was being changed to a fundraiser called "RightNOW! Relief for the Gulf Coast."
Sponsored by RightNOW!, the Lifetime Networks and Rock the Vote, the party was to feature country music star John Rich.
Heck, with a bit of luck,
Heck, with a bit of luck, maybe some of the suddenly available MSM time slots will be allocated to the one Republican ‘convention’ that is not being cancelled. With production crews already in Minneapolis, why not?
Well,
they all have to head south and do a news segment hanging onto a lamppost so they aren't blown away by the hurricane.

Silly to suspend
I understand they don't want to look bad pre-empting news coverage, but deciding what stories to cover isn't the RNC's job. This is somehow related to the notion that all our lives should be centrally controlled.
I'll just bet
There's an insider on vacation somewhere watching tv saying, "I can't believe they actually went for the hurricane plan."
how convenient for them
no convention not only gives the excuse for old manipulated media not to report anything on the other activities, it gives the rnc 2 things:
1. being free not to be put on the spot and be seen how they will deal with the protesters, the other convention, and what have you. it is a tightrope walk where any response from them is potentially catastrophic;
2. having a reason by the old manipulated media to make them look "patriotic" or "caring" about the potential hurricane victims. this story will be spun like crazy, like a soap opera drama unfolding, so that any other story can conveniently be buried--this story aims to be the "loudest in the room" to make these people look good in the eyes of ordinary americans.
this is a setup guys, plain and simple. the hurricane might not be,[haarp is a possibility]; but what ever did happen, this situation will be used as another "show" for the public.
remember that the issue of the protestors, the war, the economy, were all "eclipsed" in the democratic convention by the "emotional" declaration and appeal by hillary to support obama--an "unprecedented" call for unity---this is the shit being sold outside america, this is the script being peddled. the mccain "being a hero" effort to prioritize hurrican potential disaster victims is soap opera for the american public and the world
This is
McCain trickery to avoid a floor vote.If he can avoid a floor vote the nomination is handed to him.The Ron Paul delegates should have their eyes and ears wide open,McCain is going to try to sneak in the backdoor by crying Chicken Little and suspending procedures.

A coup in other words?
Will they get away with it or will the public finally begin to react?
I hope the
Paul supporters are not lulled to sleep with this. The public will probably think that McCain cares about the coast folks and is showing his concern rather then seeing it as a coup attempt but we can always hope for reaction.
