Last Chance -- For Life: Pat Buchanan
Why the 2-party election matters:
"The reason this election is the last chance for life is the Supreme Court. For it alone -- given the cowardice of a Congress that refuses to restrict its authority -- has the power to reverse Roe, and because that court may be within a single vote of doing so."
Last Chance -- For Life:
By Patrick J. Buchanan, Sept. 12, 2008
Near the end of a town hall meeting in Johnstown, Pa., a woman arose to offer a passionate plea to Barack Obama to "stop these abortions."
Obama's response was cool, direct, unequivocal.
"Look, I got two daughters -- 9 years old and 6 years old. ... I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."
"Punished with a baby."
Obama sees an unwanted pregnancy as a cruel and punitive sanction for a teenager who has made a mistake, and abortion as the way out, the road to absolution and redemption.
The contrast with Sarah Palin could not be more stark. At the birth of her son Trig, who has Down syndrome, Gov. Palin said: "We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives.
"We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed."
Between the convictions and values of Palin and those of Barack, then, there is a world of difference. In the culture war that is rooted in religious faith, they are on opposite sides of the dividing line.
But more crucial than their conflicting beliefs is the political reality. This election is America's last hope to reverse Roe v. Wade. Upon its outcome will rest the life, or death, of millions of unborn children. The great social cause of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, of the Evangelical and Pentecostal churches, of the entire right-to-life movement, hangs today in the balance.
Why? It is not just that Obama is a pro-choice absolutist who defends the grisly procedure known as partial-birth abortion, who backs a Freedom of Choice Act to abolish every restriction in every state, who even opposed a born-alive infant protection act.
Nor is it because Joe Biden is a NARAL Catholic who has been admonished by bishops not to take communion because he has, through his career, supported a women's "right" to abortion, the exercise of which right has ended the lives of 45 million unborn.
Nor is it even because McCain professes to be pro-life, or Gov. Palin is a woman who not only talks the talk but walks the walk of life.
No. The reason this election is the last chance for life is the Supreme Court. For it alone -- given the cowardice of a Congress that refuses to restrict its authority -- has the power to reverse Roe, and because that court may be within a single vote of doing so.
Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, Sam Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts appear steeled to overturn Roe and return this most divisive issue since slavery to the states, where it resided until January 1973.
And John Paul Stevens, the oldest and perhaps most pro-choice justice at 88, is a likely retiree in the next four years. And there is a possibility Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, at 75, a survivor of cancer, could depart as did Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
Thus, in the first term of the next president, there is a strong probability that one or two of the most pro-Roe justices will leave the bench. Replacement of even one of these two liberal activists with a jurist who has a Scalia-Roberts-Alito-Thomas record on the U.S. appellate court could initiate a challenge to Roe, and its rapid reversal.
Not only would that decision be a stunning perhaps irreversible victory for the pro-life cause, it would return the issue of abortion to Congress and the states, where numerous legislators are prepared to curtail if not outlaw abortion on demand in America.
Overturning Roe would re-energize the right-to-life movement in every state. In some, like California and New York, where it could not wholly prevail, some restrictions -- i.e., no abortions after viability -- might be imposed.
Requirements such as for parental notification before a teenager has an abortion and that pregnant women be informed of what the procedure means and the trauma that often follows could be written into law.
If Roe goes, all things are possible. If Roe remains, all is lost.
Is there any certainty that John McCain, who set up the Gang of 14 to give Democrats veto over the most conservative of Bush judges, would nominate an Alito or a Roberts? No.
But there is a certainty that a President Obama would move swiftly to replace a Stevens or Ginsberg, or any other justice who steps downs or dies, with a pro-choice jurist. For support for Roe v. Wade is a litmus test in today's Democratic Party, where the right to an abortion has been elevated to the highest rank in the Constitution.
Bottom line. If Obama-Biden wins, Roe is forever. If McCain-Palin wins, Roe could be gone by the decade's end.
As Catholics are the swing voters who likely will decide this election, one awaits the moral counsel of the Catholic hierarchy.

Abortion is a RED HERRING..
And, the argument that McCain must get elected so EVENTUALLY SOME DAY, IF THE EXACT CERCUMSTANCES COME UP.., enough Judges will get on the court and reverse a decision that can be REVERSED IN 5 MINUTES BY PASSING RON PAULS BILL. Removing Jurisdiction from the Courts , effectivly cancelling Roe V. Wade.
Every so called "christian" who voted for anyone other than Ron Paul and is using this argument is the KING OF HYPOCRITES...
If they wish to call on Karma of our decision GUILT to MANIPULATE through EMOTIONS (not rational objective thought) then
BY THAT PRINCIPLE....
THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERY ABORTION THAT HAS TAKEN PLACE AND WILL TAKE PLACE FOR THEIR REFUSAL TO BACK DR. PAUL AND WORKING AGAINST HIM...DURING THE PRIMARIES..
And every dime they lose in the Market is Karma for opposing Dr. Paul on the Fed and Economy..
Abortion is a matter for the States, and Communities not for the Federal Govt...
"We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light." - Plato
Abortion is not going away
I do not believe in abortion and I would never get one. I believe life begins at conception, but that is my religious belief.
I am old enough to remember when abortion was illegal, and people still got abortions, they just got illegal and sometimes dangerous abortions. Some teenage girls just did it themselves.
Back then there were probably less abortions, but people were more aware of the dangers of unwanted pregnancy.
If abortion is illegal, there will just be another illegal, underground industry. Just look at the countries where abortion is illegal. People there get abortions at the same rate as they do here.
This abortion issue gets so tiresome
I know I disagree with Dr Paul & probably many of you out there, but Obama was right. His girls would have been punished with a baby, & the baby would have been punished, too. EVERY child should be wanted. EVERY child deserves two parents. EVERY child should have a full-time mother up until the age of five, & then the mother should still have the time available to be the primary care-giver. I was raised by my father after the age of five, & it stunk! He was a full time politician & held several offices at the state level. He was BUSY! I don't know how Palin can be the governor of a state & now run for VP & mother her Down Syndrome child? Don't tell me about her husband, or her large family. A child needs a mother & I'd like for all the Down Symdrome mothers to tell me how they also could manage a career like Palin's & have a child with these needs? Why did she need to have another child at her age & with her career? Was that very good planning? I guess she takes her own advice on birth control - use none. Same advice she gave her pregnant daughter.
We live in such a selfish time whereas
an innocent life (your own child) can be murdered because of inconvenience. What baby isn't inconvenient? (diapers and feeding). What child isn't expensive? It is all relative. Maybe that's why God doesn't want sex outside of marriage. When pregancy comes along you have two stable people willing to sacrifice for their children. I would guess there are "working poor" couples who raise their children in a more loving and accepting environment than a lot of wealthy "boarding" school kids.
It isn't all about money and material possession folks. Besides, whether believer or atheist, one thing we can all agree on... "when we die we aren't taking it with us!"
All we have in life (for true happiness) is our relationships. What could be a more precious relationship than that of a mother and child? When the women is done pursuing money, status, one-night stands, a perfect body, designer clothes, fancy cars and exotic trips...she will still have this void in her life. God made us this way. He is a "relationship" God and we are His creations. He made us to love and be loved. Starting with the most powerful bond of all, your own flesh and blood.
TV has lied to us. These relationships on are TV ridiculous.
Ancient religions have sacrificed babies to their gods, we are sacrificing our babies to the MONEY gods. The LOVE of money IS the root of all evil. Just follow the trail. We won't mention the money that Abortion doctors make murdering innocent lives. Follow the money trail. Population Control? Money trail. Our current political situation? Money trail? Healthcare situation? Money trail of greed, not true health care and prevention. I'll stop here, it is endless.
Oh, I forgot all of the "dead" churches and their leaders who would rather have fame and fortune, than to tell the TRUTH, in order to save souls and lives. (Being Politically Correct, is more important than representing the God they profess while passing the collection plate).
I challenge the church leaders to give up their huge salaries, pensions, benefits and building projects..How about building and collecting for safe havens for pregnant teens? Put the babies up for adoption to help with the fees.
Oh yeah, Pat? Then how come...
we have SEVEN Supreme Court Justices appointed by Republicans, yet we STILL have Roe v. Wade, and they also gave us Webster, which reaffirmed Roe v. Wade.
You can go to the same well only so often before you start drawing mud.
HR 2755
With all the Current EconoBabble from both “Conservative” McCain & Obama, and all the BUSHIT from “W”, it is refreshing to see that a REAL PATRIOT has the ONLY solution:
To ABOLISH THE SOURCE OF ALL THE DEBT - the privately owned “Federal” Reserve Bank!
I interviewed Congressman Ron Paul this morning about HR 2755 - The Federal Reserve Board Abolition Act - which will be rebroadcast this weekend.

Of course
Mcinsane is pro-life or I would say more like anti-abortion, He wants all the little soldiers he can get. It's okay to kill em for no good reason when they hit 18. Seems hypocritical to me. Same goes for Palin. How can you be pro-life and pro-war? And why is this the big issue anyway? Nobody likes abortion. The government should'nt fund it. How bout we fix some big issues so the life babies are born into is better. I know if I was a pregnant Iraqi woman right now and could,nt get out of there I would want an abortion. I would not want to bring a child into hell.
I agree that
if our country was truly free and didn't have the huge government burden (IRS, etc) a child wouldn't provoke such fear, (in regards to finances). It would be accepted as bundle of joy , instead of a burden. How awful are Satan's lies. But we are also educated enough to prevent most pregancies..
beat it with a stick
IS this a demacrats post or something . HIT the road
2 girls would not exist if Obama logic prevails
Punish them with a baby . IT's backwards The baby is the one that would get punished, I-I-I-I-Idio-. Not to mention the two children referenced to.
says
John McCain is promising more of the Guantanamo Kangaroo Court
As noted by others, the Supreme Court is at stake with two, perhaps three seats to be filled. Believe it or not, Bush picked Roberts and Alito not for their social conservatism (red meat issues like abortion and the gay--the Roberts court has left both Roe and Lawrence firmly in place) but for their fealty to the idea of corporate personhood (and constitutional rights under the 14th Amendment). McCain is promising more of the same. Whether or not you agree with them on social issues, Justices Ginsburg and Breyer have been good about trying to protect the rights of individual (human) citizens, particularly with the atrocious Gitmo issues.
Do you really want more of the Guantanamo Kangaroo Court and the ability to detain people indefinitely without charge? That's what John McCain is promising for the court.
Forethought
Perhaps the Republicans should have thought about that before continuing federal funding for abortions through Planned Parenthood all through the Bush/Republican Congress era.
Perhaps they should have thought about that when they were so enthusiastic to violate the constitution through the Patriot Act and the war in Iraq. Not to mention the Viagra for seniors program and the clear advance toward a police state.
Now people are supposed to support them for the sake of the supreme court?
PJB not With TAC Anymore
Just for the record, Buchanan always had a minor role at The American Conservative magazine, and now has no role at all (and hasn't for a long time). They run his column. That's it.
This is typical of Mr.
This is typical of Mr. Buchanan, and why I can no longer support him politically when I used to be in his Brigade.
Pat spent the first 3.5 years of the Bush administration railing against him, throwing rocks at him, and in general acting like a P.O.ed paleoconservative.
Then in Fall 2004, he endorsed President Bush against John Kerry, on flimsy arguments that Kerry promised to be slightly worse. Forget the war Pat was against, the Abu Ghraib scandal, the Patriot Act, the massive expansion of federal government. He endorsed Bush, and lost tremendous credibility.
Now he's apparently doing it again with McCain, despite McCain being far to the Left of George W. Bush. He's playing the Supreme Court Card.
I'm sorry, I cannot respect that. He should change the name of his magazine from the American Conservative to the American Waffler.
SUPPORT OUR FOUNDERS' AMERICA
Support the Constitution of the United States
I agree with you alot
I fear he like most americans have fallen for the lesser of two evils, and the acceptance and perpetuation of that.
I did gain respect for him, when he had alot of good things and what appeared to be HOPE for RP.
I can honestly think he forgot where his roots are and if he was elected office, he would regain his libertarian leaning principles. BUT I still have reservations about him
Freedom may be worth searching for.
Remember, Dont battle the govt with guns(ALONE), Beat them in court, in state legislature, or hire Ron Paul for president.
I Agree with over-turning Roe.....However...
If we politicians that were true Constitutionalists, they would do more than over-turn Roe(an issue that should have been left to the States),they would have opposed The Patriot Act,Fisa, stupid unnecessary wars, and massive federal entitlements...I too was a Buchanan Brigider, but there is no certainty that McCain will appointment Constitutionalists and there is NO REASON in the World why the GOP shouldn't stonewall his appointees to the bench(if they were so much concerned with the unborn and The Constitution....
One more reason to vote 3rd Party......

First off
You understand that PERSONALLY RON is against abortion. Proffesionally HE IS FOR STATES RIGHTS. Have the Ind states descide.
2nd. 45 million extra people, times one or 2 kids each, conservatively, 100 million MORE people that our school system, medical system and Govt cant handle NOW. So our population would be 400 million plus. You think gas and food is expensive now... pweeew.
3rd YOU have not seen a country that abortion is illegal, (But still done) You see 4-5 kids with a single mother, 3 or more fathers of the 5 kids, and those families suffer. Living in shacks, with a terrible rate of education, food, sanitary conditions. I ve been to 30 countries, I have seen it first hand, eaten dinners in houses as previously described, then had the food poisoning and diahrea to follow.
The moral of number 3 is that its better to have a structured family, with some security, descent living conditions, food, education and LOVE.
Its better to want a child to come into this world than being unprepared for it and unwanted. SO MANY CHILDREN SUFFER because of this.
4 Human race has few examples of knowing its natural balance in the world, as it relates to food, shelter, and its surrounding enviroments.
Ukrainian people are the ones that come to mind as a good example. They see their environment for what it is, food supply and quality of life that it is, and their population is shrinking out of common sense. HELL they live in the breadbasket of europe. Must be some common sense that escapes the rest of the human race, PARTICULARLY chinese and indians for example.
Yes I know life is sacred, and God is great. But you have not seen the places where GOD appears to have forgotton. (PLEASE ITS JUST TO MAKE A POINT)
Do what you want to do, as long as it doesnt hurt me financially physically or my property.
you said... 2nd. 45 million

you are dead wrong... those extra 45 million people would have been working and producing to the good of the country.. they would have been paying taxes, owning businesses, buying houses, buying products to live thus contributing to the economic health of this country! who knows what great contributions some of those now dead people would have contributed. you sound like henry kissenger or these other complete idiot morons who believe in population reduction! think about what you are saying... think about how much more sound the social security trust fund would be if 45 million others were paying into the system,, there would not be a huge panic of all these baby boomers going into retirement now!
your argument is that of a liberal! ask Ron Paul what he would think about your statement! your assumption is dead wrong! you need to vote for obama!

This is a very emotional appeal
And I understand the hope that motivates it. We all want to believe that there is hope that the SCOTA will one day overturn this most heinous piece of judicial legislation. But it has nothing to do with this election. The money involved isn't appreciated by the average American, and that is what drives the law. The court will do the bidding of the elitists who run the gov't. Period. Forever. There has been ample opportunity to change this ruling. Since Ronald Reagan, we have been promised that, if we vote for a neocon, just one more time, then we can do away with the infanticide. Well guess what? They have appointed many so called "conservative" judges and they immediately "grew" to embrace the culture of death.
I have heard this argument too many times to buy it ever again. We the people must change the law, but first we must take our country back. When the Congress is filled with men and women of honor, they will be in a position to define human life as beginning at conception and then these children will be afforded the equal protection of life that everyone else is supposed to enjoy.
Supreme Court be hanged, they are just another cat's paw for the NWO.
