My Johnny Appleseed Initiative
Let me begin with a small story.. Their is a story that very few people tell anymore where I grew up.. It had to do with my Grandfathers General Store.
If anyone knew Paul Howard they would always refer to hims as the man who would cut up a apple for you. If ever stopping by the store I would never be let down to visit my grandfather, always quick to cut an apple up and pass a little salt if you beckoned.
His back yard was filled with Apple trees, from Red Delicious, to Granny Smith, to Golden Delicious. Mind you he always bought apples from the adjacent town orchard to sell in his store for he had 11 kids to feed and needed those back yard fruit trees.
I'm glad I've not forgot those memories.. here's why.
I see my home town now and everywhere you look their is nicely cut blank void grass lawns typical of cookie cutter design do it yourself home gardening commercials that it makes me nauseous upon reflection of how things once were.
The thought came to my mind today when I stepped out of bed..
If I offered to plant a fruit tree in everyone's yard in my home town their would be creation of not only a possible fruit market in a few years but a real viable use for all those wasted front lawns.
Couldn't help but thing, Gosh my very own Johnny Appleseed initiative.....LOL. I'll be talking to city council tonight when I get home.
Just wanted to share a possibility for everyone out there who reads this and cant stand the wasted lawn space problem in America.
Not to mention learning about B-17 in apple seeds is a possible cure for cancer if not a preventative measure.

Have to have more than one tree planted for some of the heirloom varieties to produce fruit? You know, male-female!
Just A Thought "smile".

Bees fly.
Do they not? Yeah that's the whole thing about everyone's front yard having a tree. Not all the same but their will be more than one of the same kind.
Yeah I've Seen Bees Fly, It's Not A Conspiracy
But, certain fruit trees and possibly some other plants have to have both male and female to pollinate. My gardenin' skills might be a bit outdated but I would at least investigate that you have to have both male 'n female.
Hey! This is a peace lighthearted thought.
I love trees in neighborhoods, really.
Thanks =]
I know. Having a Yoda moment I was...lol.
great thread : ))
I have apples & pears. Also anyone with a garden will tell you that theres a bonding between neighbors who come over to unload their too damned many cherry tomatoes and zucchini that can only be had by the sharing of food from the sweat of your brow.
Live Free or Diebold
LOL.
My Roma tomato plants are still producing like crazy... I know what you mean. I don't have fruit trees yet but that is coming soon.. REAL SOON.
Great idea!
I planted an apple tree and the deer ate it.)>:
From a similar thread about seeds. . .
Someone mentioned below packaging liberty seeds. I copied this from another thread here on the website:
"You change the way a person thinks by planting a seed. By not giving them information, but letting them think for themselves in the questions you ask.
Such as; have you read the Constitution? It's very easy to read and understand. You can go to your library or go on the Internet to read it. After you've read it ask yourself, have either parties democrat or republican followed the Constitution when voting for and passing our laws?
Or do you know how to find out how your Senators and Representative has voted on the issues? Then tell them where they can find that information."
Maybe on the cover of the seed package, one thought provoking seed could be planted. These seed packs could be given out at community fairs and festivals, at trade show booths, whatever.
I love the Jonny Appleseed story. What a great idea!
An apple a day
keeps the doctor away, and apparently the B17 in the seeds is an added bonus!
I've been eating apple seeds recently
and I've not even been phased in the least.. Fear is what people who scream cyanide want you to have.
I'm 47 years old. All my life...
I've eaten "entire' apples (including cores with seeds). ...Good for the colon.

fireworks of kudos!!!
Did you guys know that ajwyoming is a squirrel? It's true. And I love this idea. This is the BEST idea ever on this site. My squirrely cheeks are salivating already.
I have to plug an excellent description of John Chapman, the actual man behind the Johnny Appleseed myth. Read the first chapter of Michael Pollan's book "The Botany of Desire."
There's no other pleasure quite like the one that comes from cruising around the neighborhood and getting a free cherry or peach or yellow plum from a neighbor's tree.
There are so many potential orchards out there waiting to realize their potential. Yummmmy!
The greenies will love you for promoting the planting of trees
and the squirrels will love you for giving them more playgrounds.

I love this idea! I have been thinking about this for a while. I've been trying to get my Mom to put a fruit tree in her front yard... she's too worried about what the HOA will think, LOL
They'll think she's smart when they are all starving.
The question then is what will the HOA think when she erects an electric fence around her fruit tree to keep them away from it!

Funny how that works.
Apples = People Food.
I completely agree, and in
I completely agree, and in fact, the wasted space of lawns has been one of my key points to ponder. A small lawn is nice for family recreation, but most of that space could be used to grow gardens. (aka, feed ourselves). I think the reality of our current situation will force us to put our lawns into service, and rightly so. It's a wasted a resource and we're all going to be better off producing our own food anyway.
Check out www.pathtofreedom.com ... a great resource for urban homesteading and self sufficient living on a small suburban lawn.

I think this is a TERRIFIC idea!
I also like the post below. We could all do this, and put the seeds in packaging that said "Seeds of Liberty". On the back of the package could be a copy of the Bill of Rights...... HEY this could really go somewhere!

"Not armies, not nations, have advanced the race; but here and there, in the course of ages, an individual has stood up and cast his shadow over the world."
Haha.
What better way to spread liberty than to make people less dependent on the grocery store. Not to mention a great diversity of fruit.
I was thinking that in my town I could set up a list and have people sign up. If they wanted a fruit tree, I would plant it for them..
If people didn't want a fruit tree then I would run for city council and make it a ordinance to have at least one food bearing tree or plant per household...LOL.. Just kidding.
Maybe not a mandatory fruit tree per home, but how about
working toward getting your local government to set aside some of its city-owned land as a community garden, free to all to use for growing crops of their choice?
