It's one of those truths no one wants to hear. But the fact of the matter is... if we don't confront the truth we will forever be lost.
I heard this on Rex's Rants and Raves today and it blew my mind! Boy we have fallen for it... hook, line and sinker!
The sooner we shut down the Department of Education the better... because as far as I can tell... if we keep going on the pace we're at... we might just become the stupidest people on the planet. No wonder foreigners look at us like we're fools!

The Department of Education or Whatever (DEW for short) certainly helps the United States get systematically dumber every year.
I noticed that the 1895 final exam looked similar to my 7th or 8th grade final (real work). I went to a non-accredited private school run by a little Baptist church in the Black Hills. They refused to accreditation mostly because they weren't about to feed the students propoganda. Also the school was under no circumstances going to turn out DOE idiots.
I don't imagine any of us is smarter than an 1895 5th grader.

all the public school system is, is a government indocrtination center, where we are taught just enough to get by! we are indroctinated into the statist view.. this why we have so many commie bastards and socialists running our government.. this is why it just enrages me everytime I see some fool stick up for a twerp like kucinich or some other halvsy patsy!
they are the ones who vote to keep the schools the way they are.. If the society can not think for themselves, they will not question the government!

There are also several Capitalization errors.
For example, question 3 under "Arithmetic":
Apparently the typist (re-typist?) didn't realize that the period following the "lbs" is there because it is an abbreviation, and the word following it should not be capitalized under the rules for such that are being tested. Same error is present in multiple places in the list of questions (just look for any abbreviations and the words following them, there are too many to list here).
Doubtless because the idiot followed the suggestions of his word processing program, which does not really know about abbreviations and the rules of capitalization. Ironic, isn't it?
And when it comes down to it, a lot of those questions are culture-sensitive; for example the math question dealing with computing cubit feet is great, but converting it to bushels of wheat? Appropriate for a farm child from the late 1800's that lived on a (wheat) farm in Kansas, but not exactly relevant today. One would expect a child today to be capable not of converting cubic feet to bushels, but rather to tell me how many 8Mb picture can be stored on a 2Gb flash drive. (And yet somehow I think even the teacher in this grammar school would not have a clue about the answer to that.)
I am not disputing that a significant number of people today are "dumber" in certain ways than our forebears, but we must also realize that we live in different era, have significantly different skills and problems as well.
Each generation needs to be free to learn what is appropriate for its own lifetime -- the major problems that I have with the public schooling system are that in general it is -- by design -- intended to mainly be a place to create a mindset of obedience and contrition, and to stifle virtually all initiative and creativity. Most children are born with a sincere desire and love of learning -- this is typically destroyed (or at least "tempered") by the end of their first or second year in "school" and as such sadly destroys the capacity for genius that is present in a fairly large segment of the population.
And we are all poorer for that.

I grew up on a farm
just up the road from Salina and went to a 2 room school with 2 great teachers.They managed
to teach grades 1-12 with no problem.Yesterday I went to the store and bought a lot of canned goods that were on sale.The checker said you sure are buying a lot of cans.I said stocking up for the coming crash.He said"did an airplane crash?I said no,the economy is going to crash.He just shrugged
his shoulders and said well good luck with that.He had no idea what I was talking about!!
