I've asked two random people in two days if they've heard of Ron Paul. Both replied the same: "I'd like liked to vote for for him." This depression is a great opportunity to engage strangers on the issues of limited government, free markets and sound money. Don't be shy.
Here in Sioux City quite a few people are far too busy with their important lives to even return simple hellos. If they lost a little of the "necessary" garbage in their lives, America might well become a great nation again. Families would become closer; people would treat people like people again (...and that's a lot of people, folks!)
I'm from Glenwood, IA, just south of Council Bluffs. I will never forget the smell of Sioux City, is it a water sanitation plant or something? Anyways, its nice to see a fellow Iowan around.
but the pro mccain propaganda that many on my homeschool loop are slinging along with the outrageous opposition and disdain they show when I try to reason with them---and I'm not even a bahama supporter---suggests rather that they will be sneering with glee when the death squads come for the likes of me.
But I was saying this just last night. Just try to think for a moment what this could mean. The families of America (and the Western world for that matter) are going to have to SIMPLIFY.
Americans are going to have to start re-learning discipline, and how to live modestly, and use ingenuity in home repairs rather than just throwing things away and buying new. They will have to mow the lawn and paint the house themselves, rather than hiring gardeners and painters. AND they will be able to teach the kids how to help and be responsible.
They are going to have to re-learn how to re-use things, and pass "hand-me-downs" to their kids, in stead of always running out and buying their kids the latest fashions. They are going to have to scale back and have old fashioned SIMPLE Christmases which focus on family .. instead of spending hours opening nauseating PILES of expensive gifts. To save on electricity they may start to play board games at night or read books in front of a roaring fire.
Just think....When grandma and grandpa have to come and live with the family due to budget issues, children will once again be able to gain the wisdom of their grandparents, and families will live in multi-generational households.
People will be growing food, and cooperating with their neighbors, and learning simplicity once again. Instead of spending their spare time frantically shopping or golfing or boating or racing around, they will have to spend time at home because they won't be able to afford the gas or the hobbies. So instead maybe the family will take walks together or go to the park or play baseball.
Frankly, although this is going to be tough, I think that it could be the best thing that has happened to the SOUL of Americans in a long time. Perhaps it will turn out in the end to have been a blessing in disguise.

I know this is an unpopular view around here, but I see that as part of the problem. We see ourselves as sharing a collective interest with the people of our nation. Like it or not, this is collectivism.
I like "globalism", not in the sense of a global government, but looking at every person, regardless of their nation of a birth, as an individual with the same unalienable rights. Part of the problem is that our monetary system and military power have let us exploit the resources of other countries, both keeping their people in poverty and keeping us from being self-sufficient.

That’s one thing I’ve been thinking about lately.

Think for yourself. Question authority.

I lived in
Bellevue NE. Not very far from your neck of the woods.

Actually I realize that you are slightly "tongue in cheek" here.

Perhaps years after the empire falls life you turn into what you described but until then life will be a scary hell for most.
It would be funny having people twitching and wigging out because they haven't gotten their Starbucks in a few days!

I don't know...
the leftists will probably blame the free-market and lack of regulation for this problem.
The rightists will also find scapegoats of their own.
Us libertarians need to push down on both of them.
The point is
To stop labeling people and see them for what they are: Americans.
What's wrong with labeling people?
I don't mind if people label me as a libertarian.
And, isn't "American" just another label in itself? ;-)
yes; it is

Yes, I think it's a more enlightened way
to look at people as simply as individuals as opposed to looking at them by their nations.
I think nationalism is an ugly concept.
It means identifying yourself with the government that rules the territorial region that you live in.
