To let the US know

there is another big dog marking their territory.

To destroy the dollar

and the control of the west through the petro dollar.

Why Doesn't USA

bail them out - we have all this money floating around everywhere....

A military base?

Iceland may have to grant the Russian military a base, or at least access for their commercial aircraft.

On the Monopoly board of the NWO...Russia is a "rebel" player.

I agree

I agree and I think that most countries that the Neocons demonize are countries that cling to their sovereignty (financial and physical). I suspect Bush has a much much greater knowledge of monetary policy than he lets on. He is a master manipulator. He plays the role of "stupid cowboy" perfectly. He is a better actor than Al Pacino.

No bailout, lending money

with a higher interest rate than the interbank rate, so Russia to profit from the interest. I suppose if Iceland would go under and not being able to pay back the debt over time, Russia may claim Iceland part of its territory and develop it. It may also bcome a prime offshore location of olichargs?

I doubt it that Russia would bail out Iceland

for goodwill... but do wonder if it might be one little tiny step in connection with their plans to draft a law marking out Russia's borders in the Arctic, where it is competing with the West for control of vast energy resources.

Montenegro? A country Serbia controlled it and Davis(one of McCains aids) and McCain helped Putin and friends gain its independence?!?!
Well, Russia is now playing ball and Russia, China, EU, Britain, and the US are now re-drawing boundaries and land! They are already setting up the NWO.

This whole thing is starting

This whole thing is starting to sound a little like Red Storm Rising (by Tom Clancy).

Iceland played a key strategic role for Russia in that book.

Submarines

Iceland is a bottleneck and choke-point for the Russian Northern fleet, a friendly government may quietly back out of SOSUS or other naval traffic monitoring agreements with US/UK/NATO.

Of course...

maybe they're just being good neighbors.

Strategic Power Projection

Militarily Iceland would provide Russia significant air bases and naval bases next door to the American continent. As the USA declines in strength, Russia would be stregically positioned to build itself into the next Unilateral power across the EU and toward the Americas.

Also they can now buy Iceland and cover their losses from selling Alaska to the USA.

its a good mobilization and

its a good mobilization and resupply area for Expansion.... Think of it as thier Guam or Phillipines...

GOLD

Bjork?

...

ROTFLMAO

Oh that was rich.

I love Bjork...

i'd bail her out anyday.

Russia wants to be the next

Russia wants to be the next empire and have the reserve currency of the world...

I read somewhere that Russia might consider converting their ruble to a gold-backed ruble.

If they do that, the world will flock to their currency.

Personally, I'd love for Russia to back their currency w/ gold, so the one world government plan crumbles faster.

Don't think so

Icelanders were against having a US base in Keflav'ik from WW2 until 2006, even though we were getting money, free service to our commercial air fleet and assistance in water rescue missions over 90% of the people there hated that we had a foreign military there. The Prime minister has said that in the talks that they have had with Russia there is no other strings attached other than Iceland will pay them Interest on the debt.So far I haven't found anything on any news website back home that says anything Russia is demanding in return.

http://www.mbl.is
http://www.visir.is
http://www.ruv.is

Those are mostly in Icelandic, some articles are translated into polish/danish/english.

That may have been then, but

That may have been then, but now they are bankrupt and don't have much say in the matter if Russia holds them over a barrel.

Iceland has been seeking

Iceland has been seeking this loan from Russia since mid summer. Russia happens to be one of the wealthiest countries in Northern Europe right now and we have never had any problems with them. (We've been pretty insignificant apart from in WWII and Cold War). Russia has control of several small islands north of Iceland so strategically they don't really need us as a Hub for operations.

It doesn't seem right that

It doesn't seem right that they would just want the interest payments. Why else do you think Russia is doing this if it is not for a military base?

The girks?

The girks?

"Haarde said. "So in a situation like that one has to look for new friends." (Haarde was adamant, though, that any deal did not extend to military cooperation, refuting the suggestion that Russia might be given access to an airbase vacated by the U.S. Air Force in 2006.)"

Is the government in Iceland

Is the government in Iceland more trustworthy than other governments? Why believe a statement in Newsweek? It sounds like you're from Iceland and know what is going on in that country. Do you have any suggestions of what Russia is going to get out of the deal besides goodwill? Does Iceland have forests or oil or precious metals?

Non of the above

No Oil, No Forests, No Precious Metals.
Only Natural Resourse Iceland has is Hyrdo/Geothermal energy. We currently have 3 different Aluminum companies operating there due to our abundance of cheap energy.
By estimates I saw some time ago, Iceland is really only using about 20% of both resources currently.
Either Russia is going to want to use Iceland for production to keep energy costs low in any type of refinery capacity, or they are going to want icelandic IT/Programmers. We have one of the highest number per capita of highly educated and credentialled computer techs/programmers in the world. Last option I can think of is Russia is going to ask Icelanders to go consult them how to get Geothermal Energy since we have one of the most advanced systems and been consulting several countries on that energy source for a few years. Knowing parts of Syberia are on top of large "Dorcile" volcanic Hotspot, they may want to start working with that.

In regards to politicians, even though our politicians mess us up all the time, we still have more control over them than you have over washington. Just think about a city of 300.000 people, the city government is held accountable alot more than Federal government here in the US so we tend to get less BS than what you are used to here. And we also have the good fortune that children there are raised to be political, we have a very high % participation in elections and majority of people know the issues and have done their research. I found out about RP for example due to a few of my friends that still live there were talking about him back when he had just announced his Presidential Campaign.

And finally, I only linked to newsweek to have an article written in English for people to see. Where I read that originally was on www.mbl.is and www.visir.is both news sources that have no bias when it comes to our leaders there.

I could buy the geothermal

I could buy the geothermal energy theory, but why would Russia just not hire the geothermal experts to run plants in Siberia? Is Iceland the best location in the world for geothermal?

Basis for Geothermal Energy

Any place that is located on so called "Volcanic hot spots" can produce Geothermal Energy more easily than other places. A graph of some of the major hot spots are on this map.
http://www.mantleplumes.o...
What this does is it bring a magma plume up through the crust so liquid magma is flowing closer to the surface than in other places as well as it lifts the places up (In Iceland we learn that our island would be underwater were it not for this plume).
Now with this cycle magma is flowing closer to where we can get close to it, and there are "springs" of water close to where the magma is flowing, this water gets super heated and then as steam comes back to the surface, the steam then is harvested for electricity. Now Russia is not a major spot for volcanic activity but they have a long history (including considered the largest eruption in earths history) of eruptions. I cannot be 100% if it's viable for them to explore this energy source but hey, about the most sensible thing in my mind.

Iceland is the best spot for

Iceland is the best spot for geothermal according to that map. Is there really that much potential energy available from geothermal to interest Russia?

That's the answer. They are

That's the answer. They are going to put in missiles and a forward base.

One of the main reasons the

One of the main reasons the American Naval/Air base was removed from Iceland in 2006 is due to a report released by DOD in 2001 about possible nuclear missile sites controlled by the US. Iceland showed up on that list and the populous there demanded from parlament to not renegotiate the deals with the US military.
