U of Maryland Newspaper Report on Ron Paul's Visit

The persistent politician | By: Kevin Robillard
Diamondback Online

Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) appeared before a crowd of several hundred cheering, applauding fans last night at the Comcast Center.

As Paul walked up to the podium, he waved his arms for quiet. Silence filled the room. He began his speech and mentioned the suspension of his presidential campaign.

One voice could be heard above his speech and the crowd: "Write-in!"

While Paul's supporters may not be large in number, they definitely never give up.

Last Night At College Park

I was in attendance last night at College Park and there were definitely between 500 and 600 people there, the vast majority UM students. The venue was in a gym and the students primarily sat in the bleachers and allowed the floor seats, which had backs, to be used by the older people in attendance.

As you are aware 5 of the 8 congressional seats being contested in Maryland are by Ron Paul Republicans and last night was my first opportunity to hear the majority of them speak. All did a fine job, and one in particular moved the crowd and had them on their feet. All are running in districts considered “safe” Democratic seats, so as the economy continues to tank let’s hope lighting strikes in November.

Attending last night was a Republican member of the House of Delegates, who is a really honest man, and working hard to try and make Maryland a two party state. Also in attendance were several members of the Republican State Central Committee who have been very friendly and open to Paul supporters within the Party. Paul supporters in Maryland, who have explored working with the Republican Party, feel we are in a unique situation since our legislature is over 75% Democratic. The Republican Party in this state is open to any help they can receive, and thus far we basically all have had a cordial working relationship.

The crowd was passionate all thru Doctor Paul’s speech, and I watched the bleachers on a number of occasions, gauging the student’s reactions. It was clear he had supporters who had heard it all before, and many others who were intently listening for the first time. After the speech Doctor Paul went into the crowd to shake hands and was mobbed by hundreds of students. Many wanted their pictures taken with him, others handed over books and slim-jims to be signed, others just wanting to shake his hand and thank him. This continued for perhaps 40 minutes before Doctor Paul took his leave.

If last night is any indication, the cause of Liberty is finding many new converts amongst the youth of this country. They are hope for the future, but we cannot just dump the present state of affairs in their laps expecting them to solve it. Looking around last night at all those young faces, reaffirmed to me that those of us well past college age have to continue on with our work of trying to lay the groundwork for setting this country on the right path. It would be the greatest injustice for us not to do so.

Who Gave the Rousing Speech

Dave - I'm curious, which one brought the crowd to their feet?

Peter James

I had only met one of the candidates prior to last night, which was Richard Matthews, who is truly a good man. The content of all the speakers was good, but the one who blew me away the most in terms of speech delivery was Peter James, candidate from Maryland's Fourth District. He seems to have an excellent handle on the countries current financial situation, for he tried to explain in layman’s terms about derivatives, which he calls a “quadrillion dollar house of cards”.

James went on to implore those in attendance to be personally responsible in their lives to make a commitment to work to turn the direction of this country around. He pleaded with the audience not to leave it for others to do. He made it clear that the future and fabric of this nation depended on those sitting in the room, who were hearing and understood the message, taking action. He was extremely, extremely impassioned when talking about this and brought the audience to their feet several times. Never having heard Mr. James before, I was duly impressed as he got more vibrant and stirring the longer he spoke. He was by far the crowd favorite prior to Dr. Paul.

Boy thats a great picture to

He really lights up around young people. He loves seeing them interested in their Contitution. I think they strengthen him. They are like battery charges. Thanks for this post it was awsome.

PS you can see the reverence in the young peoples eyes it's amazing!

A morning melt....

My heart melts when I see Dr. Paul. Thank goodness we still have some youth with attention spans longer than a video game. There is hope.
