But the way the current system is rigged there is no likelihood that such a candidate could actually win the election. However, there's one reform that might liven things up.

A reader reminded me of the Maine-Nebraska system for choosing presidential electors. This is an idea I've advocated for years as a means of shaking up the current red state/blue state alignment. In Maine and Nebraska, presidential electors are chosen by congressional district rather than statewide. The winner of the statewide popular vote gets the two electors that represent the Senate seats, but the electors representing the House seats are assigned to the presidential candidate who win that district.
