Army Orders Pain Ray Trucks: Report Shows Potential For Death

After years of testing, the Active Denial System -- the pain ray which drives off rioters with a microwave-like beam -- could finally have its day. The Army is buying five of the truck-mounted systems for $25 million. But the energy weapon may face new hurdles, before it's shipped off to the battlefield; a new report details how the supposedly non-lethal blaster could be turned into a flesh-frying killer.

The contract for the pain ray trucks is "expected to be awarded by year's end," Aviation Week notes. "A year after the contract is signed, the combination vehicle/weapons will start be fielded at the rate of one per month."

It's been a very long time coming. As we've previously reported, there have been calls to deploy the Active Denial System in Iraq going back to 2004. But it's always been delayed for legal, political, and public relations reasons. Anything that might be condemned as torture is political dynamite. Interestingly, the version being bought is not the full-size "Version 2," but a containerized system known as Silent Guardian, which Raytheon have been trying to sell for some time. They describe Silent Guardian as "roughly 1/3 the size and power of the other Active Denial Systems," and quote it's range as "greater than 250 meters." The larger system has a range somewhere in excess of 700 meters.

H'mmm

I'm more concerned about "willing resisters" than I am, "at this point", their weapons.

The Russians found out that women can be the superior sharpshooters-snipers over their counterpart.

Carry On...

The Pain Ray is a scary weapon!

And the "non-lethal" version is scarier because they are more likely to use it against American civilians. After all, they already have the means to kill people out to 700+ meters: mortars, machineguns, cannon, etc. But we know that they are not going to do that, just like little countries know that we are not going to nuke them.

Similarly, when I hear someone bragging about the gun they carry, especially a big one like a .44 magnum, I am like, "Yeah, yeah, whatever." They have never shot anyone and, realistically, it would take an almost cartoonishly sinister attacker to provoke them to take the drastic step of firing their weapon. I am not really worried about hitting someone (with my fist) who carries a gun, but when I run into someone with a non-lethal weapon like a baseball bat, I get nervous - I know that they are prepared to use it.

It is unlikely that the U.S. government will every get to the point where they kill everybody at a demonstration, even one including violent demonstrators who are throwing rocks, breaking storefront windows, burning cars, etc. It is not going to be like in the Running Man movie where they machinegun a crowd of food rioters and then blame it on a "renegade" helicopter pilot.

But the use of non-lethal weapons against demonstrators is well-established. For instance at my website I quote two sargeants:

"It is common knowledge that the IDF fielded supressed .22 rifles in urban combat. Mostly to target individuals in crowds that are loud mouths/leaders... IDF has used them for awhile now, crotch shots are their prefered aim point."

How can civilians defend against pain-ray trucks?

The obvious weakness of the pain ray is that it is directional. It cannot be fired in two directions at a time and it takes time to pivot the entire vehicle around to point it in a differenty direction.

Motorcycle mounted snipers can literally run circles around a pain-ray truck. The Silent Gardian has a range of about 300 yards, so the Aguilar System for Medium-Range Sniping is ideal, as it requires snipers to zero their weapons for 300 yards and hold over on the mil-dots for shots out to 650 yards.

Effective Countermeasures

It is theorized that reflective mylar survival blankets will block the microwaves - especially if grounded. Also, google "Faraday Cage." This is what is used in the door of your microwave oven to keep the energy contained.

Also, mylar is used in anti-tazer suits. I have seen them advertised at law enforcement supply sites...

It's hard to fire a rifle

when you're dressed like the Michellin man.

In real estate it's location, location location. In urban combat it's mobility, mobility, mobility.

As I say on my tactics page, "The moment you stop moving is the moment you stop moving, if you get my drift."

It's certainly creepy, but

It's certainly creepy, but the microwave taser does not impress me much as a threat.

I mean, it's clearly regarded as a non-lethal weapon that does no permanent damage. On the other hand, a sniper rifle or a .44 magnum (or a grenade launcher) does a lot of damage. Which would you rather be shot with? I'll take the Pain Ray.

I saw this used on the military channel on TV, or maybe discovery channel, sometime within the last year. I believe it was the show with the bald ex navy seal who does shows on various weapon systems around the world.

That "Pain Ray" shgould be easy enough to defeat...

Got a few microwaves lying around? I am sure we could make our own Microwave-like proof armor :)

better take off the tin-foil hats

when in front of the active denial system.
