Well>>>It happened!!!!

First time in 21 years......We laid off people today and re-negotiated pay on our top performers. THIS JUST KILLS ME.......

This has shaken our company to the bone.....we have never had to do anything like this......the employees that we had to cut pay on were just thankful they were keeping their job. I thought for sure we would have a full mutiny, but it was 100% the opposite.......we are restructuring for survival.

Just giving you a heads up on how bad it is getting....

Sorry to hear of your situation.

But as a small businessman I haven't worked in my industry since November 2007 and for me there is no unemployment. I've had to take a 60% pay cut just to find work. My reality started 1 1/2 years after 911 when the house market stared its downward trend. The sad truth of the matter is that it is worse than I think. In 1999 I took a big pay cut in order to movie to a beautiful part of Michigan. At that time for my hourly wage of $12.50 an hour I was able to buy Junk Silver at $4.20 frns for 1 face dollar. Basically meaning that I was getting 3 silver dollars an hour. As my business grew for 4 years I was up to $25 frns an hour. As of November 2007 I was receiving $1.75 in silver face value for my $25 frns an hour. If I had been working in my industry in March when it spiked over $20.75 frns I would have received $1.20 in silver face value for my $25 frns an hour. From $3.00 silver in face value to $1.20 silver in face value.

Now in 1959 Gasoline was selling for $0.20 a gallon, two silver dimes. If you track the price of those two silver dimes with the prices of gasoline you'll see that two silver dimes have been able to buy 1 gallon of gasoline since 1959 to present, plus or minus 1 or 2 cents in silver, face value. Basically $0.18 to $0.22 in silver. Following the lead and lag of the market.

Thus the Great fraud of the Federal Reserve Banking system and its Federal Reserve Notes (frns).

Politicians today aim to grow our economy by burning our cities to the ground, instead they should take a lesson in economic theory.

Craigslist and Garage Sales: Use them to save money!

Just a suggestion: To save money, my oldest child needed clothes because he was a 3T and now needs 4Ts. Went on craigslist with my specific needs and found people who needed to sell things because they need the money. I got a tall kitchen garbage bag FULL of NICE 4T-5T clothes for $20 plus 2 pair of shoes for my son. The retail value I'm sure would have been about $200. If you need clothes, household items, tools, furniture, electronics use Craigslist for your city and find GARAGE SALES posted on Craigslist so you know where they are and what they are selling. If they are in nice areas, usually the items are well taken care of. Not all garage sales should take place because some people do sell JUNK, but not all. Select your areas carefully. Sometimes on Craigslist, they show pictures of the items too. Don't waste your money going to the mall or where ever. Not to mention, No Tax. There is nothing wrong with second hand clothes, toys, furniture, etc..A valuable lesson that I'm trying to teach my kids and one I learned for myself real fast.
Also some people are willing to barter, so cash exchange, but all needs are met. Or barter your services and talents for the goods you need.

One thing I learned about Goodwill...

... go to the ones near the "good" neighborhoods. You'll get better quality clothing.

Exactly! And yes goodwill

Exactly! And yes goodwill and consignment shops are good and the salvation army stores if they are in the right place! And believe NO ONE will turn their nose saying "eww you shop where?" They will be asking for directions, especially when they see what you purchased for your money. Even rich people shop at these places. That's why they are rich :)They don't waste their money.

Think of things people will want leading into a depression

and make/market those. I've begun making extra-rugged hand carts in my spare time but those will go on hold while I test-market an item for gun owners.

Wood stoves, chimneys, chimney service and repair, chainsaws, wood-splitting tools, bullet-proofing, barrier fencing, emergency lights, entry locks and padlocks, solar-powered security systems, auto salvage, farming, gunsmithing, these are a few things that may heat up in a looming depression. Maybe you can add some more ideas.

I'm a metalsmith

and will be producing small weight coins out of scrap sterling silver (92.5%) and 18kt gold for barter beginning early next year.

Feelin' the crunch

We've been waiting for our big client [read: only client] to make good on payments owed for May through September. Now after all this waiting, it appears we aren't going to see a penny more from this client (who allegedly had not received payment from his client). It's been difficult enough holding on all this time, but now, knowing that nothing more is coming...hoo, boy. Though my husband's line of work has been rather lucrative in the past, business has fallen a great deal, and now has dropped right off a cliff with nary a client in sight. Now, I'm listing things on ebay in order to buy groceries.

And the day after I realized no promised check was forthcoming...my computer died (borrowing one now). Naturally, computer repair is not at the top of my financial to-do list.

The writing has been on the wall for some time, so I'm mentally and somewhat physically prepared, but it looks like we're going to be making a sudden and quite drastic residential change very, very soon (say, within "30 days"), if you know what I mean.

I am very grateful to DP, as my education here certainly helped to get me prepared for this and other types of eventualities. I may be bidding farewell to a nice home and lovely possessions, but, I've got many (though not all) of the necessities we've so often spoken of here; I've talked with my kids in the past about possible changes, so they aren't taken totally by surprise; and keeping the Big Picture in mind makes it easier to part with things that are, let's face it -- just things, after all. I feel mostly prepared, and certainly blessed.

Oh! And Victory Garden 2.0 is sprouting!! Success in the garden at last! Good thing I planted in (portable, movable, relocatable) pots instead of in the ground!

Best wishes and warm encouragement to all who are facing their own economic downturns. Keep breathing -- we will get through this.

Fanofwalt I just wanted to say,

from one mom to another, that as long as you have your family and your health you will overcome anything. I understand because we are also on the brink but it is all good, as long as my family is together. No one can take that away from me. And yes, we all will get through this.

"For with God nothing shall be impossible"

"For with God nothing shall be impossible"

So far

my largest account is over 60 days out on payment, I am $150000 into this job and they just added more work. But the problem is I am about broke. I will have to start saying affirmations to get the $ rolling

You should get a meeting

You should get a meeting with your account to negotiate terms for early payment. You could offer a 2.5% to 5% discount for early payment (don't offer too much of a discount up front). If that doesn't work, you should say you will need some up front cash to continue, if their 60 days past due (?) is an undue burden for you.

If it turns out they haven't got any money, it's better to find out immediately so you can cut your losses and move on, or sue.

Wow, that non-payment thing sounds exactly like something...

...I went through a while back with my biggest customer. Thankfully, they DID (finally) come through with payment, after stringing me along for over two months. But, after that, I'm very leery of letting things go that long, ever again (as it severely impacted my cash-flow, as well). Sounds like you must be renting, if you only figure on 30 days. If you had a mortgage, you could probably hang in there a LOT longer without paying (not that I have a mortgage, either :-)). Good wishes to you and the munchkins. From the little I saw of them, I'm betting they're tough enough to make it through any adversity. And I'm sure you'll do the same.

Take, I have owned my own

Take,
I have owned my own business for 20 years now.. this is the first time I will be having to lay off 4 people.. I am in the same boat you are! I have never had an employee collect unemployement on me in 20 years! for the first time in 20 years I am wondering where my next job is coming from!
everything I have been preaching on here for a year now is happening. We are headed into a depression .. there is no doubt.. with all this stimulus the fed and government are putting into the system it is surly going turn into an inflationary depression just like Ron Paul has said! I can see it!

3 years ago I had 30 employees. now I am down to 5!

My husband lost his job today..................

I am in a state of "shock" right now. He has worked there for over 7 years. 3 years ago he got promoted and they moved us to SC. I do contract work as an accountant and have not worked in 5 wks. I am honestly in shock! We have a 30 yr. fixed rate mortgage with Countrywide. I don't know why I'm telling Y'all this except that I hope to find some comfort here. I am trying to stay composed so that I do not freak him out but I am very scared. Please pray for us.

Bummed out here too....

My stepfather let me go about 5 weeks ago. I have worked for him for 14 years. I have applied and interviewed for a bunch of jobs but still haven't found anything. At the interviews there are piles of applications. I am pretty concerned---and getting closer to frightened as time goes by. I have a mortgage and 4 children....things just keep getting more and more expensive. Self-worth is hurting these days when I can't even be a cashier --"over-qualified" they say. Hang in there with me. At least we have each other.

Thanks for sharing!

It's really very frightening how vulnerable we all are, unless we own our homes outright. I'm in a one person family, so if I lose my job, there's no backup! We'll be thinking of you. I don't believe where I'm at in rural NE is hurting too much yet ... people are oblivious. But wages are low ... so most of the jobs don't pay much. The state has been advertising their job fairs, etc. Aurora loans just announced they are hiring 40 people ... they are the mortgage paper processing company owned by Lehman but not included in the bankruptcy. But within a few weeks/months, it'll be here, too.

i buy grain from aurora.

Well a little update

We were very busy today.....I guess we are in a market that is not affected immediately by a stock market crash.......we were swamped. Even though we laid off people today....and lowered salaries of our employees.....we did good.....I will take it one day at a time........overall....we are down 35%...which has never happened in 21 years...

Peace

Thx for the update

Every little bit helps. I work in the schools ... so found it extremely interesting that Dallas is laying off teachers!! I do think states and cities will be very strapped and laying off ... wonder how far THAT will go before the Feds bail them out too?? Socialism, we're here.

Layoffs

Tomorrow was to be my final day, however I found out late this afternoon that I will be kept on for a couple more weeks. We've seen this (economy) coming for quite some time (years) so have had time to prepare for it. It pays to be aware and plan ahead.

Awesome

Good Job!!!

Silver Manipulation

Ever since I've been watching silver (and gold) they've been manipulated manipulated manipulated. If the powers that be can manipulate it NOW, who's to say they can't manipulate it forever? I'm becoming a believer in what a poster said a few weeks ago ... silver should never be bought for investment, it should be bought for an insurance policy. Someday (soon, who knows?) it may be what brings us through a tough time. But that's what it should be kept for, an insurance policy. Hopefully some day we can leave it to our heirs without ever having to use it. Silver should never be traded for FRN's. OK, I'm open to discussion ... but all the manipulation has really turned me off for metals, except as insurance.

READ MY POST

2 or 3 BELOW.....you can make a fortune in Metals ETF's..

Silver is impossible to find

Silver is impossible to find right now.

There is something very strange going on in this country. Someone is literally yanking Silver off the market, someone should find out who is buying it.

Funny you should mention that...

My father just quietly called me the other day. He has a lady that works under him and her brother came to visit her at the office the other day. He works for the FBI. In a "hush, hush" conversation had with my father, the FBI man's sister, and one or two other Higher Ups at the company, he was advising that people buy cigarettes and alcohol/whiskey in case you needed to bribe someone (like a government DHS? PO? Military?) to get somewhere or get out of a situation that you may find yourself in.

Anyone else find this odd?

Yeah

Good luck finding any........If you actually want to invest in Silver....then you should buy 1000 oz Comex Bars at or close to spot. They will cost you $10,000 or a little more, but you are getting in at this price!! Also.....I know people here hate it....but you can play the SLV ETF......I am playing it. I have a lot of physical.....but you can make a killing on this ETF. NOTE:Many people will cry over and over here that this is paper and not physical...which I understand.....but if you want into the Silver market NOW...and cheap....me personally......I am now buying the SLV ETF becuase I will not pay $21 and ounce. I am selling my Silver on Ebay for $21 to $24 and buying the ETF with some of the $$$$.

Oh yeah I forgot

You need to choose your premium........I hope you can follow me here...when Silver is this low...$10 an ounce, you will have to pay a premium......as it goes up the premium falls.....here is how it works..

SORRY the DP does not put the correct spaces in.....I hope you can read this and understand

Spot Price Physical Price.... SLV ETF
$10.00.... $21 to $24.... .... $10
$15.00.... $21 to $24 ........ $15
$20.00.... $21 to $24........ $20
$30.00.... $31 to $32........ $30
$50.00.... $50 to $51........ $51

Do you see what is going on....as the price goes up...you lose the premium!!

If you do not understand this...read it again!

NOTE:I understand people do not like ETF's..... here.....this is 100% my opinion...and I am doing what I am doing......just trying to help.

take if you can buy and hold

take if you can buy and hold that is ok .. the problem is they could take the spot price down to what 7.00??

We are headed for tough times,

If you have any money, buy gold and silver, we are headed for hyper-inflation.

I just won a big battle against my wife, she is cashing in a relatively small 401k and we will be buying precious metals.

I Completely Disagree.

About Hyper-Inflation...

Hyper-Inflation demands / Demand...
Demand demands employment, free cash, or the willingness to get into debt slavery if you can find a debt master who has faith in your ability to repay with interest.

"Teach a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. The rich ruleth over the poor and the borrower is the servant of the lender."...

Most of our money is only electronic credits and can disapear through write offs. This is why the infusion of capital is necessary to keep assets from going negative. It is not necessarily inflationary.

Only 3% of the money supply is cash. No one NEEDS Gold. Although Gold will increase in purchasing power it will decrease in price into May -Aug of 2009.

Well, you probably know more than me,

about money, I am poor, but the government in the last few months of this year has printed up more money out of thin air, than the entire budget of the US federal governement. More money backed by nothing, seems to mean that money has less value. Money with less value, takes more of it to purchase something. That is inflation in my book, The last great inflationary period was the late 70's by my recollection. Wasn't that the time just after when we de-linked from the gold standard, and Jimmy Carter got blamed for the actions of the Nixon Administration?

Fifty years ago, we could buy a gallon of gas for a quarter ounce of silver, which coincidentally happened to be a US quarter. Today, you can still buy a gallon of gas or more for a quarter ounce of silver.

Precious metals are not going up in price, the dollar is going down in value.

I work in the textile industry

I hear tomorrow there will be 30 people laid off, Jese! I make rope, you would think as long as there are politicians, the demand for rope would be there, if you get my drift. I have been there 22 years and was planning on retiring in Dec. but from the looks of my 401k, I will die there. BUMMER

Yeah

We have lots in inventory. Problem is:Nobody is buying large orders- We make cotton out of other companies waste, in 1982 there were bookoos of textile companies in the U.S. since then we have watched over 70% of them close down and either go to Mexico or just give it up, its hard to really get a handle on just how NAFTA has killed manufacturing in America.

Just started

reading :America's Great Depression by Murray N. Rothbard. In his introduction to the fifth edition he states that at one time 34 million men, women and children were without any income at all and this figure excluded farm families. We will probably smash that record. I see where Nancy Pelosi wants to pass a 300 billion dollar stimulus package, I think it was 150 billion just last week. I think these people are insane. I hope they lose every dime they have.

1932, 12.5 million unemployed

when the total population including children and elderly was 125 million. Peak unemployment came in 1933 when the jobless reached 17 million. I posted this article on another post, www.russiatoday.com/features/news/31913, the article is titled "Where did America's missing millions go? Holodomor lessons". I'd really like to hear some other opinions on this. The author of the article is suggestion over 7 million people unaccounted for, disappeared. Time to go to work, my prayers are with everyone struggling with the layoffs right now. Times are hard and I'm afraid they are only going to get worse. I'm preparing for retirement right now, finishing up some projects, maybe it will save a younger person's job.

They laid off over 1000

They laid off over 1000 teachers in the Dallas, TX school district.... They were sending recruiters from our area to bring some down here....funny I was talking to my husband yesterday about the possibility of moving now that the economy is better (snicker, snicker) and he said he couldn't take the chance of losing the tenure in the school he's at because the policy is 'hire last lay off first'.... I never really thought I'd see the day that teachers had to worry about being laid off!
