Watch the yen

The yen/usd and yen/euro pairs are key indicators.

The yen has fallen precipitously after zooming to all-time highs in a short amount of time. The yen has fallen 4.3% vs. the dollar since yesterday! Perhaps the unwinding of the yen carry trade is abated, or it could be due to intervention by the central banks. Whatever the cause, it takes some of the pressure off of the over-leveraged hedge funds. The US market is up. Until this is sorted out, the market will move opposite to the yen.

I know we all have our bias

I know we all have our bias of purity here about economics. I understand but it seems to me three options to mitigate the crisis exist within the current infrastructure. We can save, we can work, or we can reduce the product of both of those activities (i.e. money). Since the people who can create the money seem to have an orgasm at any chance to create it, that's probably not gonna stop. Although, I believe the next admin won't be as absurdly incompetent and negligent as the current admin. Either way, we all no that's not gonna happen. We can save and we kinda are by default but it's also obviously not enough to mitigate the problem.

However, it seems to me there is a solution in work. We can strengthen the dollar by creating demand for it. I imagine this is where the whole bubble and bust dynamic comes into play. You create a job environment, you "create" a strong and "stable" economy. There is the obvious and probably inevitable option of enabling a "green" economy.

And yes I know all the problems with the current infrastructure and how basically it is completely artificial but it's possible to at least operate in. And if something could be done to mitigate the problem so an absolute collapse of the system doesn't happen, that is a sane thing to do. While the system is "working" there is no reason it can't be changed just the same. It seems however we kinda want a complete collapse so it almost ironically forces change, a dynamic we should not wish for.

Curiously...

Curiously, the recent strength of the dollar and yen has been a symptom of the dire mess that the economic system is in. Funds have borrowed absurd amounts of dollars and yen to gamble with. Now they are forced to pay off those loans. That has driven the dollar higher and the yen to extreme highs. The process seems to be reversing today. The yen and dollar are down, and the stock market is up.

The idea of multiple fiat currencies trading on an exchange was part of the recipe for disaster.

Even if he didn't win, if he

Even if he didn't win, if he pulled a Ross Perot, it would be a great thing.

And I already voted for his rival (Baldwin, of course). I think a vote for Nader or Baldwin is a step in the right direction.

Wow!

There must have been a huge sell-off in the last couple of minutes because I checked about 5 minutes prior to closing and it was actually about +5.04 or something, then it started to dwindle down, but over -200 at closing. These markets are CRAZY, that's all I know!

Expect Things to Get Worse with Obama

I saw this video posted off of Yahoo Finance from TheStreet.com. It features Peter Schiff talking about how the economy's going to get a lot worse if Obama becomes president. It's a good watch:

*edit* - This is a reply to dcart "currency collapse within 30 days?"

Thanks for posting that link. That is very interesting and disturbing at the same time. I am going to buy gold this week. The most interesting statement in that article was the last one - "Those who have weath and do not have gold will soon be poor." Can anyone who knows more about this elaborate on that article?

Hey Sierra,

here is an article about the difference between gold and silver, and "gold" and "silver." Interesting read.

News Media

Still shows these people on tv talking about "the fed" as if they were our good friends and bosom buddies. The "fed" is on top of this. The "fed" knows how to handle this. The "fed" the "fed" the "fed".
I even hate the way they say it.

I swear I turn on the the tv just to get some intelligent news and end up turning off before I throw it out the window.

I'm expecting it next

I'm expecting it next year...but that's just my hunch.

The brakes are definitely on, under the table, so our predictions can't hold much water.

Although I do think major US retail is going to crash this winter...but that's if it isn't propped up with bailouts.

Here comes the recession

STOCKHOLM (MarketWatch) -- Volvo AB (VOLV-B.SK), the world's second-largest truck maker by sales, Friday reported a 37% drop in third-quarter net profit, missing expectations, and said orders for trucks in Europe screeched to a halt. "In view of the weakened business trend in Europe, we expect the truck market to grow by 0%-5% in 2008," Volvo said in a statement. In North America the market is expected to decline by about 10% this year, compared with 2007." Volvo's order intake for trucks globally plummeted 55% to 32,072 vehicles from 71,572. In Europe, the order intake for trucks fell close to 100%, to 115 vehicles from 41,970.

From 41,970 to 115 ! No typo.

The malls are probably also

The malls are probably also going to start closing in January, after a black Christmas season. Frightened people do not buy fluff.

I would look for retail to seriously start falling like a string of dominoes. The Mervyn's department store chain is liquidated, 100% out of business, and that was a $1.2 billion corporate acquisition in 2006. After Christmas I would expect at least a dozen retail giants to go the same way.

Get ready for local tax/spend authorities to start talking about cutting ems/police/fire. Remind them of non-taxpayer facing areas where cuts can begin.

Time for the afternoon ride down

Let's see if they can pull it out of the nosedive.

This morning, before the markets opened, the talking head were saying there were rumors on the floor about banks and hedge funds. I never heard any details, but I can't imagine the rumors were about good news and happy times. Does anyone have any info about the rumors?

Look at the source

Whenever chicken little comes out and says the sky is falling it is usually followed, shortly thereafter, by a request from the gov to come in and save the day before calamity hits.

So if this is true, we are screwed. If it is false, they will print another trillion to hand them and we are screwed. If it is false and they are just trying to steal, they will print another trillion to hand them.

Either way: bad news for us.

I too have been hearing them. But why believe ANYTHING said by these vicious thieves.

Better to be a banker than a bankee.

FWIW--just googled hedge fund rumors and got this.
http://www.reuters.com/article/fundsFundsNews/idUSN245228702...

from the article:
Citadel Investment Group, one of the world's biggest and most powerful hedge fund firms, said on Friday its liquidity position remains strong, denying market talk it approached the U.S. government for aid.

Citadel also denied talk that British and U.S. regulators were coming to inspect the hedge fund's accounts.

Are we going to see a 900 point drop today?

What amazes me it that every day CNBC has a new "reason" it's happening.

I'm no market expert, but I

I'm no market expert, but I can see tracks of government agent dabbling (what we nickname the "Plunge Protection Team") all over the way Wall Street is behaving. It isn't logical. So I doubt it will drop anywhere near 1000 points in the next two weeks.

I would expect true crashes after election day and a lot of false "bottoms" between now and November 4th.

I mean jeepers, they can't keep on saying the same thing over and over again...

Maybe one of these days, just by sheer chance, they will stumble upon the truth and it will stick?

One can always hope.

Yes, they keep saying it...

...over and over. Remember the quote from J. Goebbels...
Do I recall RP stating, some time ago, that in a free-market economy, the value of the DOW would be more in the range of 5000-7000, not the 12,000+ it had been? I know I heard that somewhere, but can't recall the source.
Perhaps this is just the enema the market needs to flush out the crap and start fresh....get back to a more 'realistic' value.
Thoughts, comments?

Silence isn't always golden....sometimes it's yellow.

The problem is even that "value" is worth less than people think

The infrastructure in this country is aging -- our manufacturing base has been decimated (even factories that DO exist tend to be little more than "assembly" and "packaging" operations, and virtually ALL machine tools are produced overseas).

And if you look at the former "giants" like Ford & GM... their plants are big old behemoths, which may have "value" in paper terms on their books, but are worthless otherwise (and possibly even have "negative" value -- meaning they will cost more than they are worth to tear down and clear the land -- due to decades of hidden "toxic waste" dumping, etc. so even the "land" underneath has questionable value).

So setting a "realistic" value is a BIG question mark, and merely adjusting for "inflation" won't necessarily be adequate; "junk" after all is only worth what you can get for the scrap value (minus the recoup costs).

foundries

machine tools are produced overseas

The foundries to produce metal items have moved offshore due to environmental regulation. China and others don't have the environmental regulations, so the foundries have left America.

When we want to rebuild our manufacturing infrastructure, we will need to pull the old-timers out of retirement or hire Chinese manufacturing consultants.

But first we'll need to fire the thousands of bureaucrats

that hamper and prevent people from building any such thing in our society.

Heck... in most parts of the country, you can't even put up a garden shed without getting "permission" of a host of bureaucratic slackers.

I firmly believe that THIS is the reason we will essentially NEED to undergo a full-blown hyperinflation and depression (forcing all the government entities to go bankrupt and literally lay off their entire "force" of bureaucrats and wannabe bureaucrats) and the repeal or repudiation of virtually all those regulations and "permissions" -- until then, we'll make zero progress on the path back to becoming a first world nation again.

In the meantime, we'll need to hunker down and suffer through the sheer insanity of a fascist/socialist/zeitgeist slacker-driven "free lunch for all" police state on the way down into the depression.

Whether we'll make it back out in my lifetime? Who knows, but I'd say it's pretty doubtful.
