Help! My girls are being brainwashed!
My two girls just came back from school and reported they had a presidential information assembly. They had slide shows, kids acting like Obama or McCain talking about the "issues" and a form to fill out that tracks which candidate you agree with on the following issues: Education, Iraq, Environment, Healthcare, Jobs/Economy, Immigration and National Security. My 3rd grader, she's a pistol, said she didn't like either candidate and asked if she could vote for another. The teacher allowed her to do so. Unlike my 4th grader, who went along with the brainwashing program and voted for the lesser candidates on each issue. I want to write the school or board and say something. I am so very upset I can't think straight! I am asking for my fellow DPrs to help me and give me some advice on what to do or say. I ready to blow so I'm sorry if I am rambling or don't make sense. Oh, yes - they are "voting" on Monday at school.

Advise - Home school your kids
Trust me, they will be much smarter if you educate them with the proper knowledge of our history and how the nation was founded not by Gov or private school indoctrination with a force fed Big Brother mentality. This country was not made with by the use of socialism nor taxation, which is a form of salvery. They are your kids. You make the call...but remember, oneday, they will be our age, too.
This seems to have become very popular.
It seems like they train the kids from a young age to believe in the two-party system. It's kinda ridiculous. I would write to the school board if you are concerned.

I turned 19 this part july.
I remember when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade and they had the class be subjected to the 2 party system.... It had not ever accured to me, untill this moment, that I was being set up to bealive in it...... I remember thinking that the one candidate looked younger and not as old (Bill Clinton) so I would vote for him because the other man looked mean or sum sh*t....

My Daughter Educated the Teacher
My 3rd grader has had the "mock election" going on at her school as well, not too mention all the kids keep asking "who are your parents going to vote for?"
Bless her heart, she had been answering Ron Paul!
Teacher told her that he is no longer running, and assumed that we must now be voting for McCain (*ack*). She knew well enough and said no. Then she said then we must be voting for Obama, and again she said no. My daughter came home slightly confused because her teacher claimed no one else is running...
That night, we showed our daughter the other four major candidates and explained to her their positions and differences and why they are a better choice. So she went in and explained this and our position at home. While the teacher acknowledged that there were other candidates, she told my daughter the typical, your parents are being silly, they cannot win, its a wasted vote.
So, we explained to our daughter about how many people are uninformed and not properly educated regarding politics, freedom, and our constitution. We sent her to school the next day asking her teacher to look up Badnarik's Constitution Class, as well as with the following quote:
Didn't hear anything more for about a week, then my daughter came home and said that the teacher had spoken to the principle and had the other four added to the school "mock ballot". That same night my wife received a very nice email from the teacher thanking us for the information and indicated that she had been a big Obama supporter, but now has changed her mind and is considering one of the other four candidates rather than a "lesser-of-two-evils" - she also asked if we had other material that she could be pointed to for reading or viewing.
Wow didn't expect all the
Wow didn't expect all the responses...
As far as being miracle workers, not so sure about that. I suspect it is more a matter of my daughter does very well in school and both my wife and I are very involved with our children's education and other aspects of their growth, we both volunteer at the school and in the community. So, while we don't know the teacher on a personal basis, she is used to seeing us and speaking with us. So perhaps, these factors helped bend a listening ear or perhaps it was just confirmation from what she may have heard somewhere else as well.
On a side note. I have found that more people are willing to listen when it has to do with our Constitution, rather than other political issues. No matter how you slice it, all political spectrums, at least for now, still understand that this country was founded on principles and laws outlined in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. After all many of us were once taught that the Constitution was the greatest document ever written.
Anyhow, once you start showing your knowledge about these documents, others tend to become interested as well (or at least embarrased that they don't understand them) and listen more. I find Michael Badnarik's Constitution Class a great video for people to watch:
http://video.google.com/v...
Many people have told me that after the first 30 minutes they are hooked. I have even had some people say "That guy should run for president!" - go figure, I guess they were under a rock that election...
The Student Becomes The Teacher!
You should be proud of the way you and your daughter handled this situation. I probably would not have been so civil. Although, I am continually impressed with how Dr. Paul handles himself in such a constantly gracious and professional manner - and how that high road has given him such growing credibility.
Great going.

Be Calm
This is an opportunity to educate the teachers. As a mother of five who both homeschooled and used the state indoctrination system, I found that many teachers are sincere, and are interested in learning. The most important thing, when educating the teacher, is that you are calm and do not attack them. This will only give them cause to be defensive. How receptive would you be to education while under attack? Most teachers like facts.
The second thing is, do not expect the total education of your children to come from the school system. I am very aware that the time that I spend with my children is to teach them. My kids listen to AJ, watch videos, read newspapers, etc. They do know that their teachers are not very well informed.
As several, here, have pointed out to you. Your kids sound pretty cool.
PUBLIC SCHOOL IS CHILD ABUSE (so spare us your whining !)
My freedom is more important than your great idea.
I agree with the previous post. Get them out of government schoo
get them out of govt school ASAP.
"All men in power should be distrusted.." -James Madison
This is going to sound harsh.
But if you send your kids to a state school (or even many private schools) the teachers WILL try to indoctrinate your children about politics and history.
Why are you surprised?

My girls are being brainwashed too BUT
My 3 kids' elementary school here in Virgina held a mock election on Monday. To my pleasant surprise, the mock ballots for 2nd grade and up presented all six candidates! My second grader voted for Chuck Baldwin and my fouth grader voted for Bob Barr! My first grader was dismayed at having only 2 choices, but she voted for McCain. Our children can and do understand about liberty!
Strong kids
Usually kids at that age will look around to see who everyone else is voting for, then vote that way so they can feel like they are part of the group. Sadly, many adults also vote that way.
As long as the kids are
As long as the kids are telling you what is up, you have a real opportunity to talk to them, to explain that the teacher oversimplified and to give them a real education. Your little one is leaps and bounds ahead of most already, the older just needs a little extra education, in a fun but serious way, from her parents. Most people are followers. Your children are 50-50, which puts you in pretty good shape. The younger one will be more trouble to raise, the ones who really think for themselves always are, but watching her grow, gently guiding her thought processes, will be a great joy. She will have little appreciation for being treated like a child, especially as she approaches her teen years, and those are the most wonderful children to be around. I envy you on that one!

Our school . . .
has done an excellent job in teaching the students about the American Revolution. One of the teachers actually "taxed" the students one pencil a day until the class revolted. lol
I had the same issue with our school teaching that there are only two choices for President. I actually like it when this kind of stuff happens. It helps my kids see that they are not always being given all options. I think it is important to explain WHY neither choice is acceptable. My son actually wrote a paper about having to pick between two evils. He got 100% on it.
I very much enjoy our public school. My kids have had a math teacher with a masters degree since 3rd grade. They are way ahead in math. My one son in 6th grade tested at college level for reading and math. My son with dyslexia is scoring in the 96th percentile for reading. I couldn't possibly provide the kind of help he is getting, The high school offers classes that can be used for college credit. There are excellent public schools out there. It can be difficult to find them. The best schools tend to be in areas where the parents have had a high level of education and are demanding a lot from the school. It has nothing to do with spending the most money. Our school is spending an average amount per student. You can always home school your children after school. I use the standard test results to find out where my kids are weak and fill in the gaps.
I went to public school and managed to find Ron Paul. I remember taking a consumer and media class in high school. We learned about marketing, media bias, and subliminal messages. It is probably why I rarely watch TV. I can't even read an article or book now without thinking about what point of view it is coming from.
Homeschooling is not the solution for everyone. How is a parent in the inner city that has difficulty reading and writing supposed to home school their children? I know a private school teacher that pulled her son out of school for a year to home school him. He came back and had to repeat 3rd grade. Many parents have no ability to teach.
That's great but
do'nt discourage parents without higher education from home schooling. We managed quite well and I'm a high school drop out with a GED. One of my kids started college at 14 and is now a teacher. They all tested in the 99 percentile rank.
If your public school is not up to snuff do something.
The school I took them out of was a so-called blue ribbon school. It was all politics. I found out the hard way. They excelled once they got out of there. Best thing I ever did and it was'nt that difficult. Get the right materials and your on your way. You will learn alot with them.
Please do'nt judge me on my typing and such that is a result of epilepsy and medication that developed in the last 5 yrs. it used to be my specialty. Well not the typing. Never took typing. They always used the computer and typing is new to me and I was never properly taught. Just do'nt think I'll ever be very good at it. They type faster than it shows up on the screen though. Just got them the right materials and you know kids these days they seem to be naturals at the computer. They can even fix them.
I wouldn't discourage them.
I believe in freedom. It sounds like you did an excellent job with your kids. I have ran across a lot of home schooled children and their parents over the years. I have to say most of them are very nice people with well educated children. I would home school if I had no other acceptable choice.
If I felt my kids weren't getting a quality education, I would move them. I like that our school gives the kids a really hard math problem once a week without telling them how to figure it out. They have to come up with a way to answer the problem. Then they have to go in front of the class and explain how they got the answer. This allows the kids to see every different way to solve the problem. New math, old math, they learn it all. If I were teaching them, they would only learn one or two ways to solve a math problem. They are better off with the math teacher they have.
I am inclined
to agree with you.
First: Keep it cool. Second: Educate. Good luck!
-- Chuck Baldwin is closest to RP's message. --
Post the principal's and teacher's email
addresses. I bet some of us from the DP would like to help educate them or give them a piece of our mind.
Tell them that if our country stays on this path...
...They are going to inherit a very dangerous world.
Explain to them that we must start to elect candidates who will follow our constitution in all matters, but especially in matters of foreign policy and fighting wars and killing people.
Since we haven't been doing that, we are not too well thought of around the world by people who would leave us alone if we only would leave them alone.
The world is too busy living to spend their time and energy hating us. So when they do, it's only because of how we are treating them. Not because we are a free and prosperous people.
Point out that if we lead by example, instead of with force from the point of a gun, that we could repair a lot of damage done to our reputation.
Then tell them about Ron Paul, and what he did during his campaign and that the world WAS watching his message of peace and how many countries really liked him.
Then they can simply write him in!
I'm in public education
Same situation. They give the kids a ballot with two names on it. When I first saw it and let out a howl of outrage, my superior (who considers himself conservative except in matters of health care for his disabled son --- funny how ideals go out the window when somebody wants money) rolled his eyes at me. He said, "Cmoooon. How do you expect kids to know anything else but what they see on TV anyway?"
Well, yea, that is fundamentally connected to the issue.
Furthermore, talking about politics is frowned upon at school. The one thing we definitly SHOULD be talking about (the future of our communities) is censored. Oh but let's vote, cuz we're INFORMED, thanks. This kind of hypocrisy is disgusting it's dangerous.
That's the problem..
they don't want to talk about politics or the constitution or how the money system works...so, guess what the biggest problems are when they grow up?
Same education=same behaviour=same results, generation after generation
Revolution! Thank goodness for youtube waking up some of the kids, so they can learn something besides what they're spoon fed on tv.
I just screamed insde my head...
because of this statement:
He said, "Cmoooon. How do you expect kids to know anything else but what they see on TV anyway?"
How can an educator say that? I am flabbergasted...
HOMESCHOOL YOUR CHILDREN
As long as your children are in Public Education you are a "co-owner" of their mind -- you are not the final say; in fact you have little say in the matter. Really, it's none of your business.
The system spends 8-hours per day raising your kids -- then an hour or two more of homework and test prep for 13 years!!! The Media outlets, Internet, and Video game Manufacturers own them for 3 or 4 hours every evening.
They move out, having spent 12 or 14 hours of every day under the supervision of one of the above and only 15-45mins of quality time with you (the parent). When they graduate they will be worth Minimum Wage!!
Then they go to college for more public education and marry someone who has been raised in a similar manner.
After 40 more years they will be selecting your nursing home!!
Cut back on your lifestyle and Raise Your Own Kids (make intrusions in one or all of the above areas: homeschool 2 or 3 days per week; cut out video games or internet or television and replace it with quality family time).
This is how I raised my daughter: 100% Homeschooling! No television until 12 years of age (then only movies we selected ZERO cable); No internet until she was 14 and it is highly supervised; ZERO video games; and ZERO gagetry until 17 yrs.
She graduatede from the local Junior College at 16 with an A.S degree in mathematics on less than 3hrs of homeschooling per day -- She was earning $20 per hour at 14 and $30 by 16 as an adult and highschool tutoring.
Public Ed is Impratical. If you can't homeschool get into partial homeschooling, if you can't do that get into private school -- if you can't do that do public with private tutoring.
You could probably find an 18 or 19 yr old college student to help you do "partial" homeschooling!!

Funny...
..both my kids (10 & 14) are huge RP supporters. My daughter just wore her RP shirt to school and is even doing a project on RP for social studies. My son (10) would come home complaining that his teacher would not put RP's name up on the board during the primaries.

My High School
At my high school which I graduated from in June held mock primaries, and I convinced enough of my peers to vote Ron Paul. Ron Paul had the most votes in my school, followed by Obama. I did not attend a conventional high school though...
look this is quite simple...
Children do not have the life experience or general knowledge (and therefore, the capacity) to know the importance of or to unbiasly partake in mock elections. Kids know what they are taught, and their brains at this age are still very well suited for soaking up information with high rates of retention as im sure it pertains to some evolutionary survivalist physiological function of the brain.
The ability for a 4th grader to analytically deduce which candidate is the most appropriate for a specific office would be an amazing feat, while not IMpossible, certainly this is not the norm.
Ontop of complaining about elections being completely partitioned in such a polarized fashion, i would be making the argument that political education is a serious subject that can only be taught objectively, or at least as objective as possible, is through history (of which we all know even written history is filled with bias!) I would slam the schools board for otherwise allowing such a spectacle to partake in my kids school and would personally confront any and every teacher who tried to 'teach' my kid current politics. Hell if i wanted that kindof education id sit them in front of fox news for 3 hours a night. (or MSNBC, take your pick really).
Lastly, i would encourage parents to start treating political education with as high of importance as they would with sexual education. only start a lot earlier. Dont rely on your school to teach your kid , well pretty much anything that youd like to see them learn. be proactive and do some educating yourself. Remember though that without teaching your kids the proper fundamentals you run the risk of being as big of an agent for disinformation as your teachers.
"children do not have the life experience or general knowledge
(and therefore, the capacity) to know the importance of or to unbiasly partake in mock elections."
That's why people are not allowed to vote until they are 18! What kind of experience do you need to take part in a mock election? Isn't the whole point of making something mock is that you can learn from it without the lasting consequences?
umm...
no. this is the second comment from you in this thread that i cant even bring myself to bother taking seriously.
Tell your child
to ask your teacher. "If a person votes for someone who supports and promotes an illegal and undeclared war, are they also guilty of war crimes?"

My daughter's school is holding mock elections as well --- and will be given two choices only. This afternoon she said that she plans on crossing off the names of Obama and McCain and writing Ron Paul instead. I will be inquiring at the school why, if there are other choices on the real ballots, why these kids are not 'exposed' to them.
