Had a glimpse of the future yesterday...

Don't know if you all heard or not, but northwestern NJ got blindsided by a freak October snowstorm yesterday.

I happened to be sanding floors in Mt. Olive and ran into the snow in the AM. It was pretty and I spent a good deal of time taking pictures and picture-messaging them to people using my phone. Freaked them out!

I also waited for it to stop....

Long about 12:30PM, we lost power. Work came to an abrupt halt. I did some hand scraping in the corners, patiently waiting for power to return.... nothing. I told the homeowner that I was going to step out for a little lunch until this passed. Bad mistake.

Upon leaving, I encountered some of the worst driving conditions I've seen in quite a few winters. The heavy wet snow had frozen to the ground leaving 3 - 4" of solid packed ice everywhere. Anytime you touched your brakes, you slid. I slid past my first turn and couldn't back up to it again.. I took the next turn and got onto the highway. It was not much better. No plow had been out.... towns were caught flat-footed. An ice/slush mixture covered the road. It was clear that it hadn't been cleaned and wouldn't anytime soon. I made my way back toward Rt 80 figuring I'll call it an early day. I skidded through a few more intersections... luckily, no accidents. Others weren't so lucky. As I got to the on-ramp, I saw four flares... the interstate was closed!

I turned around on the median (under an overpass) and went back to the intersection I just skidded through. I figured to stop at a local Lowes and poke around until this cleared. However, the hill was steep and my van was light... needless to say I was forced back.

I pulled into a Chilis restaurant to sit it out. As I walked in, I was greeted by the manager.... in the dark. They had lost power too, even earlier than I did up the road. They could only take cash and only had a very limited menu - soups and salads. Thank God beer is not electronically dispensed!

I sat in the dark drinking a cold beer and eating luke-warm chili and chips watching the storm outside.

It dawned on me that this may be the sign of things to come... If the economy breaks as many say it will, limited services, rolling power outages or full blackouts, 'cash-only', no local government services (police, fire, road dept.)...

It really got me thinking and scared me. Usually, I'm prepared for things like this but the season hadn't started yet and I hadn't moved my 'winter kit' into the van yet.

The winter kit has warmer clothes, a blanket, fire-starters, food, etc. It really gave me an eye opener as to what other folks are going to suffer when TSHTF.

It also drove home something I had long said; you don't get to make any of the rules in a crisis. As it happened, in this crisis I was 30 miles from my home and all roads back home were closed. Side-streets were impassable. No heat, no electric, no nothing. I was at the mercy of the crisis.

You don't know where you will be when the music stops and everyone goes for a chair... Prepare yourself. Prepare YOUR VEHICLE. Try to stay close to home, if possible. I realize many times it is not. In that case, be able to sustain yourself for a few days in whatever condition exists.

Hope this helps someone else...

Save America's future: Joe Six-Pack says "Paul in 2008"

DON'T GIVE UP DR. PAUL

I know he has withdrawn his name, but please read my explanation at the link below. I do not think our financial system, and ultimately the economy are going to make it through next year. We need Ron Paul- he is the only well known candidate who actually understood what is happening, reported it to us, and took actions to stop it (HR 2755).

Whether it will count or not, and likely I will have to use a paper ballot, I intend at this time to write in Ron Paul. If enough people do it, it will send a message to the electoral college. If the financial system goes into the next phase of collapse by Dec. 15th (quite possible), America and the electoral college may wake up.

Neither McCain nor Obama had anything to say on the financial collapse (other than a few things about Fannie and housing problems) until October 2008. There is a huge disconnect here, and I do not trust it.

This link contains my explanation, plus a letter to Ron Paul:

RE full blackouts, 'cash-only'

Interesting...

In all of my thinking about the future (including the probability of power brownouts and rolling blackouts) -- I hadn't stopped to consider this aspect.

Virtually ALL credit-card transactions today are 100% grid dependent -- no one even CAN use the little carbon-paper "ker-chunkers" to take credit card payments anymore -- everything is entirely dependent upon electronics and networks, and therefore electricity. (And even "cash" is unlikely to work at many stores, because few people know how to even make change w/o a register, much less write up paper receipts, etc.)

Hmmm.....

BTW, great advice on the rest of preparation -- winter is here again (and soon possibly a Kondratieff Winter as well... shudder!).

Any more global warming...

Any more global warming and we'll all freeze to death.

You were not alone

Record lows and snowfall set all over the country.

Watts Up With That

http://www.cafepress.com/...

Does your future include

Going into third day without power

Totally prepared. Generator, solar panels with power inverter and battery. Propane tank (3) filled. Freezer filled and canned goods galore. Matches, lamp oil etc. It is the unprepared people that will do you in if you are too kind hearted. Neighbor had nothing. Nothing. It was 48 in their house. Gave them coleman stove, battery and invertor and food. I was amazed at how ill prepared they were.

Leave this long-haired country boy alone

If TSHTF I'll hunt down as many politicians as I can until they kill me.

The only reason TS would HTF is if they are trying to bully us around, weaken us into submission.

They must pay for that. The people need to see an example of someone who won't take it lying down. I am that someone.

If I didn't have a family to protect

I'd be right there with you. All I know is, let them come for my guns. Instead of taking my guns they'll be taking some bullets.... in their chest. Good thing most LEO only wear Level IIIA Armor.

"...mankind are more disposed to suffer [...] than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. [...] It is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."

A little tune to second that notion.

Politicians are not your enemy. You are wasting your time hunting them down. If you're going to hunt down anyone, hunt down the banksters - the Rothschilds, Rockefellers, everyone at the Fed and on the boards of the major banks.

Go and get them too. Fight fire, with fire.

Must Be Global Cooling

Better move to Texas while you can still get here. We still have land available.

no no ... its just a glitch in global Warming

the program just needs a litle tinkering is all

see no evil.. hear no evil.. thinik no evil

In fact don't think at all.

must be a glitch

the thermostat ??

In Australia, we have already been 'promised' that we are soon going to pay an extra dollar carbon tax per day via our electricity bill . They must know that the 'thermostat' is faulty.

Does anyone here remember COAL CELLARS?

My grandparents house in Ohio had one, but I can't imagine too many are left . Anybody have one? I wish my house had a coal furnace and a coal cellar for backup heat.

Every house I ever lived in

Had a coal cellar. But then again I've only lived in PA.

Question

Why do you think there will be power outages in an economic collapse? What would cause it?
----------
"We will never give up. We will never give in." - Dr. Ron Paul

Energy isn't free.

When utility companies can't pay employees, they stop working. Any glitch becomes a problem. Problems don't get fixed.

I may not know the truth, but I know when I'm being lied to...

Electic Grid

The electic grid in this country is one of the most vulnerable parts of our infrastructure. If one section goes down then we can have a domino effect. I have heard that maintenance has not been kept up as it should have been. Remember what happened a few years ago when they had a black-out in the eastern part of the country? Costs lots of money to maintain the system: electric workers are very highly paid as they should be due to the very dangerous nature of the job.

i refuse to feel dumb for not knowing the answer to that lol

I can only surmise indirect connections to a collapse for individual reasons.

Live Free or Diebold

Chains?

Every winter car kit should include snow chains for the vehicle.

Maybe the reason we're

Maybe the reason we're unprepared for winter is because they're always telling us about GLOBAL WARMING!

Don't you know that Global Warming causes Cooling

not just heating... It interferes with weather patterns making all types of weather more extreme. It also causes rain, and fog, and sunlight, and clouds. And when a front moves through changing the temperature, that's global warming (whether it was a cold front or warm front). And I'm pretty sure it's responsible for the Phillies winning the World Series. But the last one is just speculation.

The glaciers got BIGGER this

The glaciers got BIGGER this year.
Earth is going through a cooling phase.

Global Warming is just an excuse to institute the Carbon Tax.
Obama is probably gonna be the one to try and spring it on us.

Biden said he, Obama, would be making some "unpopular decisions".

I hope everyone is getting prepared.

The truth

The earth is warming but there is no proof that it is caused by MAN. the water vapor in the atmosphere retains 10 times as much heat as does green house gases. And the warming trend has been increasing since George Washington crossed the Delaware.

However, At the same time there is a global cooling effect that IS proven to be man made due to increased cloud cover from pollution. Factory smoke and airplane contrails. There is world wide measurements of the evaporation rate of water which shows that today the earth is 20% darker (less sunlight reaching the ground) then existed in the 1950's. This particulate polution cleans out of the air much faster then green house gasses do.

SO cleaning the air will only ACCELERATE the Warming. But I don't hear these environmentalist calling for increased smoke in the atmosphere to save the earth!

Where's your proof that the earth is warming?

And it's not just Urban Heat Island effects skewing the data?

The more I think of this..

the more I believe it will start happening more frequently this winter.

Denial of services... rolling blackouts... no heat.. no electric...

Get ready for the 'third worlding' of the US, no matter who gets into the white house. Many could die this winter. Keep an eye on older folks you know. This may be the first round of 'herd-thinning'.

I may not know the truth, but I know when I'm being lied to...

Power is still out up there for many folks..

Glad I live down here in civilization! Kidding.
Seriously though, a brief snowstorm and power is out for 24 hours?? Maybe more if it continues.
Van is stocked now. Winter kit has been loaded. Never again.

I may not know the truth, but I know when I'm being lied to...

I live in Pittsburgh. Last

I live in Pittsburgh.

Last month, there were very, very heavy gusts of wind that caused a power outage in the Northwest suburbs. The power didn't come on for over a week. I worked in that area and couldn't come into work on account of there being no power. I was really short on rent. It sucked.

I also live in Pittsburgh

The electrical grid in my neighborhood is old and on its way out (it was one of the first places to get electricity in the world and it hasn't been updated much since then). We lose power for a few hours every time there is a bad thunderstorm. It has gotten to the point where I started an easily accessible power outage "kit" years ago for the express purpose of getting through the outages.

ambulance, police

Some ambulance bases didn't have power. The police HQs had generators, though some ran out of fuel.

This is one scenario of how society can break down quickly. When this happens, will people still rely on 911 or will they rely on their family and their neighbors?

Here's something for you

I live in southern Indiana and a few weeks ago we got the remnants from hurricane Ike that came through. Now remnants have come through before from other hurricanes and it usually isn't a big deal. And the weather men were saying how this one would be no big deal and it would sail through. It hit us about 12PM that Sunday and hurricane force winds blew through a swatch of 35 different counties in southern Indiana, northern Kentucky and western Ohio and caused the most damage a storm has ever caused in those regions. In total 1.3 million people were without power for 5 to 7 days. My family was out of power for 6 days. It was the worst wind storm on record for the entire region. Everyone was freakin out. Towns were shut down including mine. Work was cancelled, stores were shut down, services were closed and about the only things open were Lowes (running on generators) and churches. Other than that nothing. It was the wildest thing anyone has ever seen come through and that includes my friends 85 year old dad. So yes, I agree, something is on the horizon for this year and into next.

Ike

And not one drop of rain in Cincinnati. Even parking my car next to the house couldn't stave off damage - the siding blew off onto my car!

don't believe in coincidences

these things happen for a reason and you are smart enough to see the reason, good for you. I've had other situations not as severe but enough to make me think hmmm. so how prepared are you really. What I hate is my work commute, 37 miles, so much can happen between point A and point B. I need to brush up to. We don't have a lot of back ways to get around here, the freeways pretty much control our travel, but I've been researching. My husband and I have also discussed emergency plans if we are seperated and things such as the what to do about the animals, we have a cat and dog. One thing I've learned is preparing and preparing well is not easy and I don't feel I'm totally there. Thanks for sharing, by the way, temperatures are dropping here in AZ, last night at midnight it was down to 75! LOL. I think about summer and the electric going out and no AC, that would be our big major crisis.

Our power went out for 10 days

due to a huge wind storm a couple of years ago.Out of town guests were staying with us for the Christmas holiday. Many trees came down,as we live in the woods. We tried to cut our way out of the neighborhood after a few days only to find the main road had not been touched!
It was full of down trees and power lines.Stores and gas stations were closed. We learned
a lot about how to make due with what you have. And singing
by candle light is kind of fun!

Mentally Retarded patients brought to vote for Obama in NC

There was almost a riot at the voting location.
With all the discussion about voting fraud and acorn I thought you might
want to know what was going on in my home town today. I live in the
town of Kinston in eastern North Carolina . I am an insurance agent with
Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company of N.C. I received a phone call
from one of my three sons this morning. He had been talking to a
republican that was a member of the local board of elections. The board
member had just left the Kinston early voting location with some very
disturbing information. He was involved with an attempt to stop the
'circus' that was going there. He had stated that bus loads of mentally
retarded and severely handicapped patients from a state funded facility
called The Caswell Center were being transported to the voting location
and that their black democratic state employee aids were voting for
them. They claimed they were assisting; but, how can institutionalized
mentally retarded patients know how to vote much less make a reasonable
logical decision? Most of them cannot read or write and many of them
are also blind. This must be illegal!! He also reported that democratic
supporters were passing out shot bottles of alcoholic drinks to other
voters before and after they had voted. The parking lot looked more
like the back alley of a local tavern on a Saturday night than a voting
location. This news was verified by my 60 yr old sister this afternoon
. I stopped by her home after work and was sharing the info when she
advised me that she had personally witnessed what was going on because
she had voted today at the same facility. She said that many voters
black/white/democratic/republicans were questioning what was going on
there.
I am 55 yrs old and for the first time in my adult life I don't have
much faith in our democratic system and the way it operates. I hope
this info will somehow help correct our countries direction and help
make other Americans more aware of our serious voting flaws and expose
the democratic party for trying to steal our Presidential Election.
