This Is The Lowest McCain Has Sunk Yet

The increasingly sleazy John McCain, who once promised to run a clean campaign, has now attacked my friend Rashid Khalidi and attempted to use him against Barack Obama. Khalidi is an American scholar of Palestinian heritage, born in New York and educated at Yale and Oxford, who now teaches at Columbia University. He directed the Middle East Center at the University of Chicago for some time, and he and his family came to know the Obamas at that time. Knowing someone and agreeing with him on everything are not the same thing.

Scott Horton has a fine, informed and intelligent discussion of the issue.

I know it may seem a novel idea to people like McCain and Palin, but it would be worthwhile actually reading Khalidi's book on the Palestinian struggle for statehood. (I urge bloggers interested in this issue to link to his book, which the American reading public should know).

At the least, read a whole essay Khalidi has written.

Far from being a knee-jerk nationalist, Khalidi has been critical of the decisions of the Palestinian leadership at key junctures in modern history.

McCain's and Palin's attacks on Khalidi are frankly racist. He is a distinguished scholar, and the only objectionable thing about him from a rightwing point of view is that he is a Palestinian. There are about 9 million Palestinians in the world (a million or so are Israeli citizens; 3.7 million are stateless and without rights under Israeli control in the West Bank and Gaza; and 4 million are refugees or exiled in the diaspora; there are about 200,000 Palestinian-Americans, and several million Arab-Americans, many living in swing vote states). Khalidi was not, as the schlock rightwing press charges, a spokesman for the Palestine Liberation Organization. He was an adviser at the Madrid peace talks, but would that not have been, like, a good thing?

Sorry to hear about your

Sorry to hear about your friend. The Bush administration’s idiotic visa and immigration restrictions are already drying up the pool of scholars willing and able to come to America. Hopefully whoever ends up in the white house next time doesn’t follow along that path. Kind of hard to pretend we are a bastion of freedom when scholars can’t even express their honest opinion about things without being put in the same basket as suicidal maniacs halfway around the world.

I don’t know much about this specific case, but is McCain actually attacking Khalidi? I mean, in a sense that could have negative consequences for Khalidi himself, and by extension, other scholars’ willingness to express politically unpopular views? There is a bit of a difference between doing that, and simply trying to scare a constituency about the possibility that a presidential candidate is close enough to a controversial scholar that some of that scholars controversial views may show up in national policy.

For example, if it turned out Obama was very close to Peter Singer (Princeton prof. with views on abortion and infanticide fairly far removed from Sarah Palin’s), I wouldn’t necessarily hold it against McCain if he pointed this out to his pro life constituents. If he promised to use his position as president to negatively influence Mr. Singer’s right to express his views, however….

SAME/ SAME

NO different than Obama conecting McCain as being BUSH...

Khalidi

I sat in on a class with Khalidi at the University of Chicago. He's a partisan; he considered it state terrorism when the IDF targetted armed militants. Of course, when the IDF targets civilians that's unacceptable. But the minute you raise arms against government you are fair game, and you are a criminal if you raise arms against civilians. A friend of mine who tried to write an essay in counterpoint got intentionally lowered grades on his work. The class eventually became a head-nodding exercise and I left, thankfully I had not signed up for credit.

The other side of the story is that the Palestinian state refuses to accept those "refugees" back and the arab countries they are living in keep them poor in order to keep them angry at Israel.

The solution to the problem is obvious: Screw history (the palestinians claim right to the land because they have occupied it for the past 1000 years, even if it is the israeli homeland, then the same argument goes for the settlers, except for the past "50 years"), draw the borders, who cares how they are drawn. Then anyone living on the "wrong side" either moves or gets citizenship on the side they are living in. As long as both countries function as republics which protect the individual rights of those living inside, then there should be no problem. Nobody is allowed to complain because they had the chance to move at the outset.

So when the IDF targets

So when the IDF targets militants its ok- but when militants target the IDF for their aggression its not ok? Its only terrorism when the palestinians attack the IDF?

Nope

When the militants target the IDF it is okay too, just, they should expect to be shot back at. Same with the IDF, if they shoot the militants, they should expect to be shot back at.

So what are they supposed to do when rockets are

being fired over the border?

You can brand any sort of response as "agressive"

CHA-CHING!

The first time I've seen

The first time I've seen this issue is looking at this website

http://therealbarackobama.wordpress.com/2008/10/04/obama-and...

There doesn't seem to be anything that's so bad about Khalidi. It just seems like he has an anti-israeli government position and people are trying to make it sound like he's a terrorist because of that. This type of stuff is just garbage and doesn't help. I wish these jokers would actually focus on POLICY issues- since their policies are basically the same(socialism and war), they won't do that.

See thats just the problem.

See thats just the problem. We don't need a Middle East Center at the University of Chicago. We need an American Constitution Center at the University of Chicago.

A University ought to have

A University ought to have scholars studying different parts of the world, including the middle east. Besides, what a university needs ought to be up to the university in question.

Exactly.

We could use one at every university.

well said.

There are 2 sides to every story,

And the truth lies somewhere in between.

But, predjudice and racism should not be tolerated.

that doesnt sound like a Obama supporter does it.

Ill quote from the song
""Obama; 6 months from now you will be on the corner looking for change.""

I've heard a lot more about Khalidi

from the media than from McCain/Palin, but then I don't listen to them or Obama, or the media if I can help it. So how close a friend are you to Khalidi? Is he an American citizen? Is he against Israel having possession of Jerusalem. In what ways are they using him to discredit Obama? They say he is a radical, basically PLO terrorist, right? Obama is more aligned with Palestine and Iran than he is Israel, right? But he is fogging over that as quickly as he can. So are you for Obama? Is Khalidi for Obama for president or is he not a US citizen. Fill us in with details that are easy to miss when listening to sound bites.

Is it legitimate for a PLO to give money to our candidates? That is what he is faulted for doing, right? Are you familiar with the difference in Israelites and Zionists? Is he? Can he distinquish the difference in the different Christian factions, the ones owned by the elites who belong to National Council of Churches and those who don't?

McCain would kill his own

McCain would kill his own grandmother if he thought it would win him the presidency.

My god,

McCain's grandmother is still alive? How old is she, 3000? ;-)
