Who has "changed" an Obama supporter and how did you do it?

There is a good post now titled "when do you think the Obama supporters will realize theyve been had?"

I'd like to ask all those who have been successful at converting Obama supporters:
- How did you do it?
- What approach worked?
- What approach did not work?
- How do you help people think critically who are used to thinking emotionally? (same problem applies to both parties)

I'd like to ask the same questions of those former Obama supporters. What helped you see past the charisma?

I came out of the republican party so its a whole different set of issues.

Carlos Menem is one example of a corrupt, charismatic leader who brought his country to ruin.

maybe there are former Obama supporters or someone who has had good results in converting them who could add their thoughts to this post.

Posts are scrolling fast so if anyone could keep this bumped for a little while that would be great.
Thanks !

Have you all seen this? Ron's message to Obama

This is pretty awesome: Ron's message to Obama

I'll have to think of some stories...I have a great one about
converting a Hillary Supporter...those are usually even harder.
--oddly enough, it was the gold standard that got her! - crazy...and
that reminds me, rather than telling a story, I'll just remind you all that
w/ people that are new to you, always ask them---what issues are important
to you? (Always get their cards first before you show yours). Then you'll know
how to approach them.

Here's how I converted an Obama supporter...

There were 3 of us, all very good friends, just chatting about the election. This was probably 10 months ago. Two of us were solid Ron Paul supporters. Our other friend, who is normally extremely knowledgeable about political issues, was an Obama supporter.

We were getting nowhere with our friend by debating the issues. His answers were all that Obama would fix it, Obama would change it, it will be better with Obama, etc, etc. You know, all the normal Obama fluff without any substance at all.

After realizing that our friend was not going to come to any conclusion about his candidate not having any answers or plans at all (this was back when Obama was giving nearly zero specifics other than "change") I decided to ask my buddy a simple question. Here is what I said to him:

Without using the words "change" or "hope," tell us specifically what Obama will do as President of the United States.

My other friend and I simply sat back, drinking our beers, while our Obama supporting friend could not think of anything to say. It was very funny to say the least. It was also odd that this was a guy who under any other normal situation is always very clued in on politics.

Ultimately, our friend converted himself when he realized he could not answer such a very simply question.

BUT, all that effort was in vain. Around a week later when I met up with that friend again I learned that he had become a McCain supporter... ugh...

I like the simplicity.

I guess some people's opinions are formed by the last person they talk to. I converted a few family members from McCain. It was difficult convincing them not to vote for the lesser of two evils. I continued to present them with evidence from current news on how both parties were selling out America and they finally came around. I constantly compared their words to their actions. When they explained how Obama was a marxist, I would agree with them and explain how McCain was a fascist. Then I would continue to talk about austrian economics and central government planning versus the free market.

Carlos Menem ...

Carlos Menem came to power in Argentina on a wave of popular support during a time of economic crisis. He was a man of the people and very charismatic. It is a good example of a charismatic leader decieving the people.
Here is a video documenting his corruption, deceptions and rise to power.

I saw that movie

it was excellent. I think you could make a thread just with it. People need to see it. It really was an eye opener for me. I suspect Iceland will suffer the same fate.

That's a good idea.

i did one and am proud of it!

before this, i had gotten a few mccain supporters. i find them easier.
now this guy even had an obama sticker on his car...we carpool together. so every afternoon on our way home, we spoke about the issues etc. till eventually he changed his mind. i also got him the revolution manifesto for his b-day. they make great presents.

First go over each issue with the person
Next have them answer it.
Once you open up a person's mind to be more Liberty-minded they will end up being a Chuck Baldwin/Ron Paul supporter.
I have done that with a couple Obama supporters.
They were amazed.

Free their minds. Break the Matrix!

I just took the survey and it came up Baldwin. Same way I voted. I tried it a second time filling it in with obvious pro government selections and it came up Nader. I wonder what would make it bring up Obama?
That was a cool idea!

thank you so much for this forum ~

deeply desiring that you get offered many useful suggestions!

I bemoaned my personal lack of success in making inroads with them to aother dailypauler, and he replied they tend to get emotional and have no depth regarding the issues.

I told them a joke.

How many Obama supporters does it take to change a light bulb?

a) one to change the light bulb and twenty others to scream racism
b) one to change the light bulb and thousands of others to scream "yes we can"
c)none since they all feel that to change a light bulb is a "non-issue" and they are only concerned with issues
d) all of the above

Then I tell them I don't support McCain either.

Did it work?

I find it very important

Not to use extreme words when explaining things. Words like evil, elites, fascism, Marxism, socialism, communism. People really don't like to hear that their candidate is a communist. Most people don't know what his point of view is on abortion and eliminating babies born alive who were suppose to be late term abortions. How sick is that.

People have a ...

People have a lot of emotional capital invested in their candidate. A non-confrontaional approach seems to be the best.

There was a post a while back on abortion with a link to Eduardo Verastegui's video. It was very disturbing. I'm not sure how someone could watch that without having some serious questions about the practice.
Here is the post.

I try to let Obamas work

I try to let Obamas work speak for itself. Show them his voting record, funding of the wars, Patriot Act 2, FISA etc, support for attacks on countries like Pakistan, increasing troops in Afghanistan, support of the bailout + 700k in contributions from banks. Basically show them - especially young people - that who he says he is and who he is when he actually goes to work are very different people and that many of the major reasons we don't like Bush have been enabled by BO and the dems.

From there it usually goes to 'lesser of 2 evils.' Then its easy chess. Of course we all agree we need major change and how could 'less evil' provide great change? Then they usually say anything but Republicans. From there you can show the trap of the 2 party system and how we are easy prey if we condone their bad behavior its illogical to think they would ever decide to be responsible to us especially AFTER they get more power.

Had a few folks get angry, some wake up, some prefer la la land, some appreciate it, some call me a bigot and everything else untrue under the sun to avoid having real philosophical debate. But facts, truth and history are on our side.

As a friend said "Obama and politicians in general speak with out any principle or logic, so his followers do the same and don't know how to engage REAL debate, especially when they have to confront unpleasant facts about their belief system."

Keep rocking - this is all up to us and we can do it. We just have to be kind, diplomatic, not reactionary and open people up to knowledge and a new way of thinking. There was a time when this was difficult for all of us as well I'm sure. It was for me.

You made a good point ...

You made a good point about being kind, diplomatic, and not reactionary.

As you said: "Obama and politicians in general speak with out any principle or logic, so his followers do the same and don't know how to engage REAL debate, especially when they have to confront unpleasant facts about their belief system." I think one way to help them not to be defensive is to show how we were the same way before we woke up. We were shocked and embarrassed to see that we had been decieved It's ok to be uninformed as long as we continue to learn and search for the truth.

the best I've been able to

the best I've been able to do is open them up to Ron Paul.... many of them told me they would have voted for Ron Paul over Obama if he had been the Republican nominee....

however, they still voted for Obama- they don't see the danger with him.

It involved my cousin

It was back in the fall 2007. He seemed to be leaning towards Obama.
However, I informed him that Obama talking about attacking Pakistan.

He's anti-war. So, that convinced him to not support him.
ps. great thread btw!
