So Anymore word

Has his campaign said anything about that issue. Was it a typo or did they rethink their position?

"Ask NOT what your country can do for you, but what you

can do for your country". Seemed alot more sane coming from JFK for some reason.

God help us

I was nearly in tears after reading a thread about this on a different forum. Everyone was praising it for being such a great idea and that anyone who opposed it is clearly "selfish" and "lazy". The lone voice of dissent was someone who lived in Eastern Europe during the 70s-80s, and was desperately trying to warn everyone from experience that forced community service is only another way for the government to control you.

It was a heartbreaking realization of what the next 4-8 years will look like--people mindlessly supporting anything Obama says no matter how oppressive or ridiculous it is. This is why I almost, ALMOST wish Bush were staying in office. At least when his administration did something insane, people complained about oppressive the government is becoming. They at least realized that they were getting screwed over. Now they will buy anything the government tells them hook, line, and sinker without a second thought. Good luck trying to wake up people now.

AND HOW ABOUT AN OBAMA NATIONAL HOLIDAY...

on November 4th? Yes, believe that people are making plans for this event and want a national holiday.

From "require" to "set the goal"

Previous version:
"...developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school every year..."

Current version (presently what's printed online):
"...by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year..."

D'ya suppose B.O. changed his mind? P'shaw; he's using smooth semantics. Now, in the revised presentation, he's just setting a harmless little goal...a goal which (ahem) just happens to require 50 hours / 100 hours, yadda yadda yadda, unless you actually believe he'd change his plan.

My favorite part about this presentation is that it starts off with the idea that people get to choose -- from B.O.'s website:

"When you choose to serve (...) you are connected to that fundamental American ideal..."

...only, this is not about choosing to serve, but coercion to serve.

What I'd really like to see on that web page is B.O.'s plan for those who choose NOT to participate in said community service.

Also, his definition of "community"

I suppose some service counts, and others won't. Probably grooming doggies at the local animal shelter will count, and helping boy scouts learn survival skills will not.

The supreme court has ruled on this (the wrong way)

So unfortunately the precedent is http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/conlaw/Butl...

In the case of butler v Perry, in 1916, the court upheld a florida law requiring a person to work on the roads in his county.

Two obnoxious quotes from the decision

the 13th Amendment declares that neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist. This Amendment was adopted with reference to conditions existing since the foundation of our government, and the term 'involuntary servitude' was intended to cover those forms of compulsory labor akin to African slavery which, in practical operation, would tend to produce like undesirable results. [240 U.S. 328, 333] It introduced no novel doctrine with respect of services always treated as exceptional, and certainly was not intended to interdict enforcement of those duties which individuals owe to the state, such as services in the army, militia, on the jury, etc. The great purpose in view was liberty under the protection of effective government, not the destruction of the latter by depriving it of essential powers.

There is no merit in the claim that a man's labor is property, the taking of which without compensation by the state for building and maintenance of public roads violates the due process clause of the 14th Amendment. That Amendment was intended to preserve and protect fundamental rights long recognized under the commonlaw law system.

I think the only constitutional argument that may hold up would be the states right argument, that states may require you to do public service, but that is not one of the powers given to the federal govt, and is by the 10th amendment reserved to the states.

We should have Dr. Paul introduce an amendment that the government shall not be allowed to require citizen service.

Another relevant case is http://volokh.com/archives/archive_2007_09_23-2007_09_29.sht...

The only required community

The only required community service would be for students, who already have required community service hours. 50 hours is excessive. And I am not sure how you go about enforcing 100 hours a year for college students.

Its excessive. But there is a precedent.

The labor of the individual belongs to the individual

.. not the state. Compulsory service for everyone is not the same as a requirement to complete hours of service for completion of a degree program which the individual voluntarily entered into.

I don't think you're so dense as to not understand the difference, I simply think you enjoy spreading the 'grey' around to confuse people into your way of thinking.

There is no 'grey' when it comes to forced labor.

I believe this is unlawful

I believe this is unlawful as per the 13th Amendment. But consider the following as well:

The article states that each college student would receive a $4000 yearly tax credit. Census data from 2000 reports that there were 14.4 million college students and 3.1 million graduate students...

That's 57.6 to 70 billion dollars in tax credits per year. That means if this ever passes the budget deficit will grow by approximately that amount each year.

In addition, 100 hours of service in trade for $4000 tax credit = $40 / hour. How can anyone justify paying college students that much per hour? That's more than twice the pay rate for the average working adult in the U.S.

Still, though, I believe it is unconstitutional for force anyone to do this involuntary work.

I also took a screen shot of

I also took a screen shot of this the moment I read/saw it a week ago....

I posted it on my C4L blog and in multiple places on facebook...

that is what we have to

that is what we have to do... Spread the "wealth" wait... I meant the truth... lol

Great job!

the responses from Obama

the responses from Obama supporters were amazing but mixed... most couldn't/refused to believe it, even though it was coming directly from his website, which I gave the link for....

then others tried to claim that we would be given a $4000 tuition break- yet that doesn't answer the questions of "where does Obama get the Constitutional Authority for this plan," and "how does he intend to pay for it?" Usually the answer was that the Constitution didn't matter and it's ok to force people to do something if it's the right thing to do.... otherwise, people were just in denial.

I ended up getting in some pretty heated debates with people... It's scary that people think it's ok to force people to do anything.... it's beyond my comprehension. It doesn't even make sense as far community service goes... they're paying people to do community service? How is that different from just a regular job? Except that with a job, your money isn't just printed out of thin air or taken from tax payers. I'm all for helping one's community, but I don't want to be paid for doing volunteer work or be forced to do it as if it's a chore! Not to mention, as a student, I don't know where Obama gets the idea that I even have 100 extra hours a semester just lying around, let alone 2 hours extra a week!

The question is what next

The question is what next will you have to do for government to get something?
It sets a bad precedent for future presidents to exploit.

THE FEDERAL RESERVE - Americas OVERLORD

It does not take a majority to prevail ... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.

U P S

Secret Program

They will name it something cool sounding. Maybe raise the peace corp funing by 100X.

See people who voted in poll about it are against idea!

aren't we

already giving grants to college students?

Why not make them work a little bit for it?

And how is giving education grants for community and peace corps service worse/different than giving grants for military service?

The only thing I don't like is the "mandatory" word I hear thrown around..

The main issue the the

The main issue the the involuntary nature of the work. It sounds as though it will forced upon the people in a very coercive way. This is precisely what the 13th Amendment was meant to stop and meant to protect us all from in the future. No forced labor in the USA, except as a punishment for a crime.

The ancillary issue is where the government gets authority to spend 50-70 billion annually to pay college students $40/hour for their forced labor.

Reddit this now!

Now they are promising $40/hr????

what is with these retards?

Yeah, that's been on his

Yeah, that's been on his campaign website for a while. Something like $4000 tax credit for 100 hours of community service for college students. It's just more government waste of resources.
