This post originally began as Bill Mollison's Global Gardener video. I have since added other examples of people farming and gardening in a wide variety of climates. Some examples have been added to show how permaculture design and forest gardening techniques can be used to grow healthy, organic food under the most extreme conditions. Feel free to ignore the global warming, peak oil, and environmentalistic undertones taken in these videos.

Greening the Desert
Here is a fascinating application of permaculture design methods to a desert environment. In this video Geoff Lawton designs a self-sustaining agricultural system in the country of Jordan on a desolate piece of land. (hyper arid, 10 acres of almost dead flat completely salted landscape, 400 meters below sea level, two kilometers from the Dead Sea, with very little rainfall, and temperatures over 50 degrees in August)

3 Films: "Farming with Nature", "Aquaculture", "Terraces and Raised Beds - Sepp Holzer's Austrian permaculture films from Oko film.
Sepp Holzer narrates how he created a sustainable edible landscape on his 45 hectare mountain farm, 1500 m above sea level in the coldest region of Austria. Within the pinetree monocultures of Austria he has built the largest functioning permaculture farm in Europe. He has transformed marginal, erosion-prone mountain lands with poor, acidic soils into stable rich soils with greater biodiversity and productivity.
Farming with Nature - A Case Study of Successful Temperate Permaculture - An "overview of Sepp and Veronica Holzer's long-term application of Permaculture Design to terrace agriculture in a temperate climate."
Aquaculture - The Synergy of Land and Water - "Here, we see in greater detail the water management on the 45-hectare farm. It is explained through an intensely personal journey from Sepp's first interest in pisciculture at age seven and on later through the 40 years that he has boldly transformed a total of 3 hectares of the hillside to produce 70 interlinked ponds and wetland areas. Sepp farms fish and, in the way of all good animal husbandry, he observes and understands their behaviour, their nutritional and habitat needs, and the natural order that exists between predator fish (pike) and feeders (carp and trout). It's as though he constructs guilds of fish since the variety of species, and the colourful decoration from inclusion of Japanese carp, makes them the equivalent of an underwater flower garden. He eats the fish and also sells them to restaurants locally.
Fish farming is but one purpose from his water management. He generates power; uses collected water to extract and pump up drinking water; the water surfaces reflect the warmth of the sun, provide humidity and create microclimates; and water temperature is varied using large boulders as heat sinks or through water movement from deep or shallow ponds elsewhere. But there is more than function: each water element is carefully located in the landscape, is provided with a variety of niches and aquatic plants, and is fed and drained by restfully-noisy waterfalls and watersinks. Here is natural beauty and sensory charm, because Sepp knows that we need more than food to sustain us, and he shows us how in this video."
Terraces and Raised Beds - This film describes the destructive effects of pine tree monocoltures on the landscape and how Sepp uses terraces and raised vegetable beds to establish a biodiverse habitat and create microclimates.

Do you know of any good resources for tropical, or better yet sub-tropic dessert with monsoons, permaculture resources? I'll be moving to India in a few months and am looking to build up my knowledge so I can buy and build up a small farm. This whole thing was just settled a few days ago so I haven't had time to look into it yet.

Planetary Permaculture Directory - Possible groups you may be able to contact regarding permaculture in India. Among them is Dr. Venkat (Permaculture Association of India) who I believe was featured in Bill Mollison's Global Gardener video (Tropical Permaculture Part 3 & 4 in the main post). He worked with the Deccan Development Society to spread permaculture in the arid Andhra Pradesh region of India. The particular site featured in the video is north of Hyderabad. The PRI institute of Australia would probably still be the best place to contact first.

A good place to start would be The Permaculture Research Institute of Australia which Geoff Lawton heads up. They should be able to provide you with information about the best permaculture projects as well as the best teachers closest to where you are going. If you are fortunate enough to connect with a mature permaculture system in India, they may be able to provide you with plants or seedlings for your own home project along with valuable information for that climate.

Think of it as a smorgus board where you can take what you want and leave the rest. I was hoping to focus primarily on the practical techniques we can use to garden efficiently and effectively. If I could find all of these techniques on video wrapped in a pure libertarian, austrian economic perspective, I would. I just checked out thesurvivalpodcast with Jack Spirko. I first heard him in an interview on Lew Rockwell's podcast but I had never seen his website before. It's nice to be able to learn about permaculture without having to filter out the globalist and environmentalist agendas. I'll be looking at these links in more depth when I have some time later.

Sepp Holzer's Austrian permaculture films
This week I added the complete "Aquaculture" and "Terraces and Raised Beds" films to this post. I previously only had the previews for these videos. The complete "Farming with Nature" video was already posted before with youtube links but I replaced them with google video. These videos show how permaculture techniques can be used successfully in cool climates.
I also added a new heading "Water Harvesting" which includes a discussion titled "Rainwater Harvesting Basics with Brad Lancaster" and a Rainwater Harvesting demonstration video with Max Meyers.

Once again, these are great videos. If you like, I've put together a good collection of links (actually saved PDF page conversions but I can find the links again) of how to pages on gardening. The collection covers how to make a good raised bed, trellises, planting blueberries and much much more. Since I've been researching this stuff for a while I've been able to separate the wheat from the chafe. I can send you the links or just post them up here for you to use as you like.

Here is an incomplete listing for the pages I have saved as PDF's. Some of the pages I have are no longer listed. Others not here are technical pages from universities, which I saved based on what I've been growing (and plan to grow). You will notice that a number of these are from the website for "Cultivating Life". Its the best gardening show I've been able to find on TV. Each one of the links for that show corresponds to a video segment if you want to go find them. I can't find the videos anywhere online.

N.B. Pretty much every plant you would put into a garden has a great page at some university. I added the blueberry one for University of Georgia because its the best I saw on blueberries and, blueberries are tough in the beginning. I may go back and get the original page for the other ones I've found but its easy to do that yourself (and get the information you are looking for). As with all berries bushes, pick a few varieties for your zone based upon when they ripen so you aren't overloaded at one time with one kind of produce.

By the way, I've been going through the 47 hr. audio Permaculture Design Course lecture. I don't know if you noticed, but there is a PDC notes file which you can print off to read while you listen to the audio files. I am on tape five now.

I saw the PDC file. Its very useful. I also got a copy of the 12 hour water harvesting audio series. I'll be burning that to CD and listening to it when I have to go on a long drive in a month or so. I slowed down going through the 47 hour one so I'm only half way through. I suspect that after I get through it I'm going to go back and take my own notes to complement the PDC. There is a lot of stuff in there, too much to get in one pass.

I'm having a lot of fun just searching for and watching these videos. I can only learn so much from a book. It helps to see how people actually did it.
It starts off as a permaculture/forest gardening post but towards the end there are other types of gardening videos. Some are individuals doing it alone and others work together in a community. After watching them I'm starting to think more seriously about the importance of community effort.

This film shows how people in third world countries try to survive on subsistence agriculture. The methods they use are not very efficient compared to permaculture/forest gardening methods but they do show how people live and use the little property they can find to grow food.
