If Sanford endorsed McCain, he is neither a real conservative nor a libertarian. You have to have principles to be either one.
I knew this sort of pragmatism would set in after the elections, after Third Parties were so badly beaten. The Republicans know they can seduce us back into their fold. With Obama as President it's almost inexorable.
Unless Ron Paul runs again, this movement will probably dissolve. Half our people are ready to go join hands with the GOP, even though the GOP is why the nation is in a crisis in the first place, and why its constitution has been abandoned.

"As far as quitting or staying with the Republicans, everyone will have to make up his or her own mind. There can be value in choosing either path. I myself have no plans to leave the G.O.P."
I would say Gary Johnson still triumphs Sanford, but after Ron Paul himself, then gary Johnson, Mark Sanford gotta be a good (no 3) choice.
He supported McCain only after McCain's de facto winning of the nomination (not before that) and in his article he mentions McCain's pork barrel discipline, which is his claim to fame...untill he voted for 150 B of earmarks and pork with the huge bailout and therefore lost credibility. Sanford, on the other hand, is vehemently opposed to the bailout. It should also be noted that while in congress, he was one of the few congressmen that attended Paul's "liberty caucus", that Paul mentioned him as a possible VP pick months ago. Also, every Republican senator and governor are expected to endorse the nominee of the party. This does not mean one needs to agree with everything that nominee stands for. It is a matter of party discipline.
The challenge Gary Johnson has is current and continual national visibility. Maybe he can get exposure on the C4L circuit, but he doesn't hold a current seat if I'm not mistaken.
Sanford has greater credential as chair of the Republican Governors Association. Even Congressman Jeff Flake, as great as his voting record is won't be able to make a serious run for President until he becomes a Governor, Senator, VP or VP nominee first. There needs to be continuity of public service for the public/media to give a presidential candidate serious credibility, unless he has big bucks early on. This is also the huge challenge Jesse Ventura has.
Ron Paul and Mark Sanford are the best opportunities for a constitutional president.
